ATTORNEYS rlllllllll IIIIIII IIIIIII |||1||||| Patented Aug. 3, 1937 UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE GOIVIBINED BOOK COVER AND DISPLAY MOUNTING 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in sample books and the like and has particular reference to a display mounting for a cover thereof.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and effective mounting for a display, such as a picture or the like, which will materially enhance the attractiveness and decorative appearance of the cover of a book carrying said display.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sample book or similar article showing a display mounted in a cover thereof in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the cover, with parts broken away to show the manner of building up the cover, and
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the cover on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
It has been customary in the manufacture of 5 sample books, binders and kindred articles to ornament the covers thereof with displays printed or otherwise applied to the outer surfaces of the covers.
The present invention pertains to the application of displays, such as pictures and the like, to
the covers of books of the above-mentioned character and more especially to the mounting of such displays in a recessed position within the covers so as to impart the impression of depth to the delays and thus enhance the appearance thereof.
To the above end, the invention, as shown herein in its preferred form, comprises a sample book which includes the cover and back sections generally indicated by the numerals 4 and 5,
connected in a conventional manner along adjacent edges so that the cover may be swung to open and closed positions.
The cover section 4 which embodies the features of the present invention is made up of a number of elements constructed and assembled in a manner to provide a recess in the cover at the bottom of which is mounted a display having a transparent covering sheet disposed thereover and also located within the confines of said recess, thus giving the assembly the appearance of an artistic picture frame. In building up the cover 4, an inner backing sheet 6 of cardboard or the like first has superimposed upon one surface thereof a picture or other display I centrally located upon said sheet and secured thereto in any manner, such as by an adhesive. An inner mat 8 of the same dimensions as said backing sheet and having an opening 9 therein of sufiicient size to expose said picture to View, is then secured to the sheet 6 and the marginal edges of said picture. The assembly operation may then be continued by applying to an outer cardboard mat H], the outer lining H of the cover which may be a relatively thin material such as cloth or leather composition. Said mat ID has an opening l2 the same size as the opening 9, and the said two openings combine, when the elements of the cover 4 are completely assembled, to form the recess in said cover at the bottom of which is positioned the picture I. The lining H extends over and is secured to the outer surface of the outer mat Ill and is also provided with an opening aligned with the opening l2 and bordered by flaps I3. These flaps are turned inwardly about the marginal edges of the opening 12 and are secured to the inner surface of the mat IE1. A transparent cover or sheet M, made of celluloid or other suitable material, is then adhesively secured to the flaps I3 and inner surface of the mat Ill so as to extend over the opening l2 in the latter, after which said parts are laid upon and secured to the then outer surface of the inner mat 8 which has been previously assembled with the backing 6 and picture 1. Finally, the marginal edges of the lining H, which have been formed into flaps l5, are turned over and secured to the edges of the assembled cover and to the rear surface of the backing sheet 6, whereupon the cover is completed by pasting a lining I6 over the rear surface of the latter sheet and the portions of the flaps l5 secured thereto.
What is claimed is:
A combined book cover and display mounting comprising an inner backing sheet, an outer mat, a display mounted on said backing sheet, an inner mat interposed between said sheet and outer mat, said outer and inner mats having openings therein through which said display is visible, a transparent cover sheet for said displayinterposed between said mats, and a front lining for the book cover also having an opening formed therein in registration with the first-named openings and defined by inturned flaps interposed between said transparent sheet and outer mat.
AUGUSTUS STEINTHAL.
