Va.
Application December 30, 1935, Serial No. 56,806
9 Claims.
My invention relates to school childrens supplies and it especially has for its object to provide an improved combination note-book and scholars companion, of a simple, practical construction, in which there is provided a loose leaf note-book in one of thecovers of which is included a box or receptacle, with an outwardly opening lid, the box or receptacle being designed to contain, in orderly fashion, pencils, a pen holder, a ruler, a compass, a protractor, a box for pen points and a box of crayonsor other suitable articles).
Afurther. object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of the character stated in which: provision is made for such an engage-- ment between the binder rings and the companionbox that whenthe book is closed twisting of thebindercover, which might tend .to tear it loose from the binder back, is prevented.
Otherobjects will in part be obvious and in part bepointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and end, the invention still further. resides in those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described in the following detailed description, then be pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which: i
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, the lid of the companion box being closed.
Figure 2 is a face view of the same with the lid open. 1
. Figure'3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 on Figure 2 with the lid closed.
Figure 4 is a detail sectionalperspective View on an enlarged scale of a portion of the invention. Figure 5 is a detail sectional perspective showing aside wall of the receptacle out out to receive a hinge. i
Figure 6 is a detail perspective View of the receptacle where it is cut out for a ring of the binder back.
Figure"? is a detail perspective view of a modifled construction.
In the drawings, in which like numerals and letters of referenceindicate like parts in all the figures, the binder'covers are made of the usual materialsfsuch as a stiffener body I, 5, enclosed in a facing cover la, 5d, and hingedly united to the binder back which'likewise is composed of a stifiener member 2 over which a portion 2a of the facing cover'is secured. The metallic ring carrier 3 carries the usual rings 4 and may be of any'of the well known constructions now acceptable on the market, the construction shown in the drawings being one in which the rings 4 are pivoted at one side of the carrier 3, as at 4a.
One of the binder covers, say the cover 5, 5a, is provided with an opening through it for access to the scholars companion box or receptacle now to be described. This box or receptacle comprises .a bottom 1, preferably of sheet metal, having outer marginal walls .lc terminating in flanges la which abut the inner face of the binder cover 5, 5a, the flanges labeing bent around the three free sides of the binder cover as at 1b to clamp the same together. The marginal wall which is adjacent the binder back is "provided with slots 8 to receive the rings ll when the book is closed, the rings 4 serving in connection with the slotted portion of the box to prevent twisting of the binder cover on its hinge in its own plane, thus maintaining the binder covers in alignment when the book is closed;
9 designates the lid for closing the opening in the binder cover 5, 5a. The lid 9 is composed of a stiffener enclosed in a cover facing 9a corresponding to that of the binder cover and is also composed of a plate I!) (preferably metal) whose edges are bent over and back as at H and [2 to clamp around the edges of the lid member 9, Be, as best shown in Figures 3 and 4. Portions of the lid are cut away as at l3 for the reception "of the hinges l4, one each of whose wings. Mia is secured to the lid in any approved manner as by welding or soldering or riveting it to the plate It. The other wings Ma. are suitably secured to the binder cover by rivets 6, or in any other suitable manner (see Figure 4). i
The receptacle also in its preferred form, includes an vinner marginal wall I5, preferably formedof metal and bent to provide a base portion l6, which is preferably welded or otherwise securedto the bottom of the receptacle. From the base portion of the receptacle there may be a wall extending toward the cover 5, 5a, to cooperate with the strip portion IS in holding the innerwall member i5 in place. The wall I5 is stepped at ll, IE, to form a rest for the lid (see Figure 4). Portions of the wall l5, 11,18, l9, are cut away as at 2l to receive the hinges l4 hereinbefore referred to.
22 designates a suitablelatch to cooperate with the latch receiving recess 23 in the inner wall for holding the lid closed.
Within the chamber of the box or receptacle and suitably mounted on the bottom I are suitable clips 24, 25, 26, 21, to hold the ruler 29, pen holder 30, pencils 3i, cylindrical box 35 for containing pens or other articles, protractor 33 and compass 34, respectively. There is also provided a stop 28 to hold a box of crayons 32 in one corner of the receptacle (see Figure 2) Instead of forming the box or receptacle in the manner hereinbefore described it may be formed as indicated in Figure 7, by reference to which it will, be seen that the inner and outer walls I531, Tex, base portion 16m, marginal channel portions law, lbx, for receiving the cover and marginalportion I922, I811:, 36and'step Ila: are formed in one piece, while the bottom of the receptacle proper 1a: is preferably simply sheet metal welded or otherwise secured to the base portion lGx, all as clearly indicated in Figure '7 of the drawings.
Other modifications of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
From the foregoing description, taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the construction, .uses .and advantages -of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art.
