of the stock. This groove 22 extends rearwardly to the chamber 23, and this chamber has a shaft 24 passing transversely therethrough. One end of this shaft is rotatably mounted in the stock and Y 5 the other end passes out through the side ofthe'v stock and terminates in the crank 25.
The rocking bars I2 and the slots I0 are covered by the face plates 26 which are secured to the sides of the stock, and these plates may be provided with suitableapertures 21 to form a means for oiling the trigger mechanism without necessitating the removal of the plates. The dart guide plate extends forwardly from the trigger area through only a portion of the length of the fore-stock 3, where it abuts the rear en'd of the barrel 23. The barrel may extend forwardly any desired distance beyond the fore-stock so that the toy will simulate a rifle. The forward end of the barrel is4 provided with a front sight 29, while at the rearv end of the barrel a V sight 30 is mountl ed, and one edge of the plate of which this V sight lsformed, is integral with the forward end edge of an-elongated guard plate 3| which extends rearwardly from the sight 30 to the rear part of the breech and is provided with the downwardly extending ears 32 which are attached to the `side of the stock. The lower edge of this guard plate' 3| is spaced slightly from the adjacent p'ortion of the stock and-from the plate I4, for the purpose hereinafter pointed out.
Secured across the front edge of the fore-stock is a short resilient plate 33, and secured over this plate is the relatively long bow spring 34. The attachment of the spring with the fore-stock is 35 midway between the ends of the spring, and these ends have a bow string or wire 35 connected therewith, which passes through between lthe guard plate 3| and the plate I4 and across the top of the latter plate. l
.Mounted for movement longitudinally of the plate I4 is a propeller which comprises a socketlike element 36`which is attached to a rider plate 31 which rests upon the dart guide plate I4 and has its opposite side edges engaged in the inward- 1y facing guide grooves I6. This propeller has a suitable transverse passage formed in the rearwardly extending eye 38 for the bow string 35 to pass through, and also attached to the eye 38 is one end of a draw string 33 which passes rearwardly through the opening 2|) and to the crank shaft 24 by way of the passage 2| and slot 22. It will thus be apparent that when the shaft 24 to which the rear end of the string 39 is attached, is rotated to wind up the string, the pro- 55 peller will be drawn back and also the central part of the bow string 35 to ex the bow, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and when the propeller is at the limit of its rearward movement, the parts of the bow string at each side thereof will lie just 00 behind the latch fingers II, and when the gun is prepared for firing it is necessary todraw back` upon the trigger 6 so as to retract the fingers II and allow the string to pass over them and then the trigger is released to allow the fingers to 66 rise in front of the bow string where it will be held by both of the fingers and the rgun will be cocked and ready for firing.
As will be seen from Fig. 2, the bow string held fingers project upwardly from between the fac- 70 ing plates 26 and the side edges of the dart guide plate I4, and one of these fingers lies between the guard plate 3| and the plate I4.
' Upon the side of the plate I4 opposite from the guard plate 3| there is mounted a pivot pin 40 75 which extends longitudinally of the side edge of the plate I4 and carries between the hinge ears 4I a dart carrying trough 42. This trough is secured to the pin 40 so Vthat when the latter is rocked in a counter-clockwise direction the trough will swing upwardly and inwardly toward the center of the plate I4 and thus a dart previously placed in the trough will be rolled over into the area between the guide flanges I5 and if the gun is held in upright or upwardly inclined position when this operation is carried out, the dart will slip back so that its rear end will enter the propeller unit 36.
In order to facilitate this oscillation of the dart trough, there is mounted transversely in the forestock the rock shaft 43 which has a lifting crank 44 upon that end which lies beneath the trough 42, while the other end is provided with a suitable offset crank 45 to which one end of a contractile spring 46 is attached, while the other end of this spring is attached tothe gun stock and thus the spring tends to oscillate the shaft 43 so as to move the lifting crank 44 away from'the trough. The shaft 43 adjacent the crank 45 is suitably formed, as indicated at 41, to facilitate the oscillation of the shaft by the user of the gun. Thus it will be apparent that in the use of the gun when the bow string has been drawn back by rotating the crank shaft 24 in the manner described and the trigger controlled fingers have been placed in engagement with the bow string to hold the bowexed, the dart previously placedr in the trough 42 can be conveniently thrown over into shooting position by the oscillation of the shaft 43.v After the end of the dart has engaged in the propeller 36 in the manner previously described, release of thebow string by actuation of the trigger .will project the propeller forward and also the dart, and as the rider plate 31 comes into violent contact with and is stopped by the rear edge of the barrel 28, the dart will be projected forward through and out of the barrel.
In order that Iadditional darts may be kept conveniently at hand, the stock may be provided with a chamber 48 which can be kept closed by the plate 44 pivotally attached to the stock and secured in any suitable manner. While an elongated dart chamber has been illustrated it will be apparent that a chamber of any other configuration may be made use of without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It should be additionally pointed out that in the operation of the gun, after the bow wire 35 has been drawn back by means of the crank 25 and cord 39, before the gun can be fired the cord 39 is drawn forwardly through the opening 2|! so as to unwind enough of it from the shaft 24 to allow the dart projector to move forward freely.
From the foregoing it will be readily apparent that the gun herein described is of novel character and may be used in the playing of games where a target is shot at.
