s calm. (ci. zza-17) My invention relates to reclosing cartons and has for an object to provide a carton particularly adapted for use in dispensing powdered, alm or` granular substances, such as may be poured from the carton.

` An 'object of the invention resides in providing a carton which may be easily opened when desired for use, and which may be easily reclosed after the contents thereof have been removed.

Another object of the invention resides in providing a carton in which the contents are kept contents will not readily leak out, either prior to or after initial opening of the carton.

Another object of the invention resides in pro- ,I viding a carton having a moisture resistant bag within the interiorV thereof for containing the substance to be dispensed vand in constructing said bag and carton so that access to the interior of the bag is had upon opening of the carton.

A still further object of the invention resides in providing a carton in which the upper end is formed through a number of end wall sections issuing from the lateral walls ofthe carton,- which endwall sections are adapted to be simultaneouslyj folded together with the upper marginal portion of the bag to close both the carton and bag. A An object ofthe invention resides in forming one ofthe end wall sections with a flap having a tab adapted to be removably secured to one of Vthe other end wall sections, which tab, upon disengagement fom the Vside Wall section to which it is attachedv opens the upper end of the container and in further constructing the other end wallsections to form an opening adapted tov be covered by the iiap. 4

A still further object of the ,invention resides in constructing one oi the end wall sections with a slit said tab serving as a'tongue for an insertion into the slit to hold the flap in reclosing DOsition.-

A feature'of theinventipn resides in constructingithe folded portions 'of the bag so that the same form an opening registering with the opening in the carton proper through which the contents of the container may be poured.

Another object of the invention resides in constructing the bag from a Vglue vrepellent material which is adapted to maintain certain of the porticns of the end wallsections from attachment to one another to facilitate the opening ofthe cover flap when access to the interior of the carton is desired. l

Another object of the invention resides in providing a carton from which the contents may be f vthe same has been opened in illustrating the maniother suitable material and a paper bag 'ii disreadiiy poured in the removal of the same from the carton.

Other objects of the invention reside in the novel'combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter illusj trated and/or described.

My invention comprises a carton or container IB which is constructed of cardboard or some posed within thel same. These parts and their particular association will now be described'in detail. I

The carton I0 is constructed from a blank I2 of cardboard or some other similar material best shown in Fig. 2. This blank is formed with two longitudinal scores I3 and Il which extend Y throughout the length of the blank. 'I'he blank is fumer formed with a number of transverse scores I5, I6, I1 and I3 which form in the blank a front wall 2|, a rear wall 22 and two side walls 23 and 2l which vconstitute the lateral walls of..` the carton. The marginal portions ot the blank I2, outwardly of thescores'IS and Il, are slit along lines 25 and 2S which divide the portions of the carton outwardly of said scores intoy upper end wall sections 21, 28, 29 and 30 and lower end wall sections 3 I, 32, 33 and 34. In addition a ilap 35 is formed on the front wall 2| which is attached tothe side wall 24 Vforming a tubular-50 structure adapted to be collapsed or extended. 1

The end wall section 29 is weakened along two diagonal lines 3S and 3l which extend from the intersections of the scores I3, I1 and I8 and converge toward one another. These lines are 55 formed by shearing the blankA I2 at the locality indicated at 38 and perforating the blank along the locality indicated at 39. The lines of weakaisnaoa the edges 55 of apsl 53 and 64. In this mannerV ening 36 and 31 are intersected by other lines of weakening 4I which extend parallel to the scores edge 42 of theend section 29. By means of this construction a flap 43 is formed which serves as a cover ap for the opening formed in the upper end of the carton and which will be presently described-in detail. This construction further' provides a tongue or tab 4'4 which issues outwardly from the flap 43. I t Will readily become apparent by tearing the tongue 44 along the lines of weakening 4I and the flap 43 along the lines of weakening 39 .that the ilap 43 may be completely freed from the end wall section 29 from which the same was formed.

In the end wall section 21 is formed a notch 45. In the end Wall sections 28 and 30 are similarly formed notches 46 and 41. These notches are so arranged that, when the wall sections are folded into overlying positions, the said notches register with one another and form an opening in the carton, indicated in'Fig. 5 by the reference numeral ,48.

Also the size of the notch 45 is such that glue is applied only to the c orner portions 51 of the end section 21. After the glue has been applied, end section 21, together with the flap 54, are folded inwardly and the corner portions 51 cause to adhere to the outermost surfaces of the end wall sections 28 and 30. The arrangement of parts after section 21 has been folded is shown in Fig. 5. End wall section 29 together. with flap 53, is next folded upon the end wall section 21 and caused to adhere thereto through the adhesive applied to the corner portions 56 of said end wall sec tion. The parts then become arranged as shown in Fig. l. The carton is now completely closed and ready for use. Due to the fact that themarginal portion of the bag is formed into doubled over flaps on account of the manner in which the parts are folded together, a tight closure is formed lat the end of the carton which prevents leakage of the contents thereof through the end closure.A

Along an area adjacent the score I3 and on the outer .surface of end wall section 21 is providedprinting indicated at 58 which is of a width less than the Width of the tongue or tab 44. This printing is of such nature that it prevents stick ing of the glue to the same, thereby leaving the extreme end of the tab 44 unattached to the carton. The tongue hence becomes attached to the carton only along a narrow band designated by the reference numeral 59 in Fig. 5. When it becomes desired to open the carton, the tab 44 is grasped and pulled loose from the end wall section 21. At the same time the lines of weakening formed by the perforations 4I` causes the tab 44 to become separated from .the remainingportion of the end wall section 29. The iiap 43 next becomes disengaged from the end wall section 29 due to the shear lines 38, and upon further pulling of the tab 44 away from the end wall section 29 said tab is broken along the lines of perforation 39 until both tongue and nap are free from the end wall section 29 to hinge about the hinge formed through the score I3. When raised to aposition in alignment with the rear wall 22', from which .the flap 43 issues, the opening-6| in the bag II becomes exposed. In the eventrthat the flap 53 is partly adhered to the end wall section 21 the same can readily be disengaged therefrom after flap 4a has been freed so that said flaps may be moved jointly into the position shown in Fig.' 6. The contents may now flaps 53 and 54 and the end wall sections 21 and.

To facilitate removal of the contents of the carton certain of the walls of the carton are formed so that the same will bend giving the rear wall 22 and flap 43 a U-shaped formation.

This is accomplished as follows. In the rear wall 22 is provided two diagonal scores 62 and 63 which extend from the locality of the scores i1k and I8 up to the score I3 at a point in the middle of the flap 43. Connected with this score is another score 64 which extends directly' across the flap 43 and tab 44. In the end section. 21 are similarly formed diagonally arranged scores 65 and 66 which commence at the intersections of arranged that they substantially coincide with Scores I3, l5 and I6 and terminate at the edge' 'gg ofthe notch 45. Similar scores 61, 68 and 69 'are formed in the end wall sections 28, 3U and 29 which register with the scores 65 and 66. By means of these scores folding of the rear wall 22 and the ap 43 into U-shaped formation is greatly facilitated.

After the carton has once been opened the same may be reclosed in the following manner. The flap 54 is unattached to the end wall section 21 and forms therebetween a pocket 50, Fig. 9. Tab 44 is inserted into this pocket through a slit 'Il formed in the end wall section 29. The'arrangement of parts, after the container has been so closed, is shown in Figs. 7 and 9.

The advantages of my invention are manifest. An extremely simple and practical reclosing carton is provided which functions positively and effectively in Ithe desired manner. 'Ihe carton can be constructed by ordinary machinery available for the purpose and likewise the carton can be filled and the ends sealed by machinery now used for the required purpose. The carton can be constructed at no additional expense whatsoever over and above the cost of cartons of the same style and dimensions. The bag within the carton is utilized for preventing adhesion of the end wall sections to one another where not desired so that the various parts operate in the desired manner.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination, a carton constructed from a sheet-of material formed to provide lateral walls including a front. wall, a rear wall, and side walls, and a bottom connected therewith, end wall sections issuing outwardly from the upper ends of said lateral walls and being adapted to be folded over and secured together to form an end wall for the upper end of the carton, a bag within said carton, the marginal part of the bag at the open end thereof projecting beyond said lateral walls and being foldable with said end wall Sections to close the upper end of the bag, the extent of said marginal part of the bag beyond the lateral walls being less than onehalf the width of the carton to cause the edges of said bag to fall short of one another to leave a discharge opening in including a front wall, a rear wall, and side walls, .and a bottom connected vtherewith,`end wall sections issuing outwardly from the upper ends of said lateral walls and being adapted to be folded over and securedtogether to form an end wall for the upper* end of the' carton, a bag within said carton, the marginal part of the bag at the open end thereof'projecting beyond said lateral walls and being foldable with said end wall sections to close the upper end of the bag, the extent of said marginal part of the bag beyond the lateral walls being less than one half the width of the carton to cause the edges of said bag t0 fall short of one another to leave a ,discharge opening in the bag when the portions of the marginal part of the bag adjacent the side walls of the carton are folded toward one another, certain of the end wall sections being constructedto form an opening in the end wall communicating with the opening in the bag, and one of said end wall sections forming a cover for closing said opening in the end wall.

3. In combination, a carton constructed from a sheet of material formed to provide lateral walls including a front wall, a rear wall, and side walls, and a bottom connected therewith, end wall sections issuing outwardly from the upper ends of said lateral walls and being adapted to be folded over and secured together to form an end wall for the upper end ofthe carton, a bag Within said carton, the marginal part of the bag at the open end thereof vprojecting beyond said lateral wallsv and being foldable with said end wall sections to form foldedV aps on the bag, the extent of said marginal part of the bag beyond the lateral walls being less than one half the width of the carton to cause the edges of the bag to fall short of one another to leave a discharge opening in the bag when the end wall sections issuing from the side walls of the carton and the adjacent portion of the bag are folded toward one another, said flaps being adapted to cover said opening in the bag when`folded with the end wall sections issuing from the front wall and rear wall, the end wall section issuing from the front and side walls being constructed with registering notches adapted to form an opening in the end wall communicating with said opening in the bag and 'the end wall section issuing from the rear wall forming a cover for the opening in the en d wall.

4.In combination, a carton constructed from a sheet of material formed toprovide lateral walls including a front wall, a rear wall, and side walls,L and a bottom connected therewith, end wall sections issuing outwardly from the upper ends of said lateral walls and being adapted to be folded over and secured together to form an endrwall for the upper end of the carton, a bag within said carton, the marginal part of the bag at the open end thereof projecting beyond said lateral walls and being foldable with said end wall sections to v form triangular shaped folded aps on the bag, the extent of said marginal part of the bag beyond the lateral walls being less than one half the width of the carton to cause the edges of the bag to fall short of one another to leave a discharge opening in the bag when the end wall sections issuing from the side walls of the carton and the adjacent portion of the bag are folded toward one another, said flaps being adapted to coverv said opening in the bag when folded with the end wall sections issuing from the front wall and rear wall, the end wall sections issuing from the side wallsl and said front wall being construct;- ed -to form an opening in the end wall com# municating with the opening in the bag, a triangular shaped ap struck out of the end wall section issuing from the rear wall and overlying said triangular ap on the bag.
