Although I prefer to use my improved attaching members with frame members of the type'described, it should be understood that my attaching members may be advantageously and quickly snapped into assembly with other forms of frame membersinlthe manner hereinbelow set forth so=as;-to.provide an eflicientmeans for separably securing the frame members together.
My preferred form of. attaching member 8, as

The foot porliatisusefuilas an aid to maintaining the flplatermember in flxed position within thecrosssecton of a frame member, but I do not wish to be limited to the same because satisfactory attachment of the attaching member to the frame member has been provided with this portion omitted. In order that my attaching member may be manually snapped into secure assembly with one of the frame members, I have provided, in my preferred form, attaching portions comprising a pair of legs l4, each of which extends upwardly from the base portion l2 on each side of the plate Ill (Fig. 3). The legs M are spaced from the plate IE! so as to permit a lateral yielding action relative to the same, and, in my preferred form, have their outer edges in diverging relation one to another in order that the legs may be cammed toward each other during insertion through the aperture 7*. The legs I 4 have their planes normally offset laterally relative to the plane of the plate ID, as most clearly shown in Figs. 2, 5 and 6, in order that the plate Ill may move toward and away from the legs I4 during opening and closing of the bag frame members,

A' fastener socket means (Figs. 2, 6 and 7) may be provided, in my preferred form, as an integral part of the flange H and adapted for cooperative fastening engagement with the projection 9 of the other frame member. The socket means I1 is preferably formed by bending a portion of the material of the flange adjacent a side thereof downwardly to form a substantially hook-shaped portion, as most clearly shown in Figs, 2 and 6. However, I do not wish to be held by the specific fastener means provided by the attaching members 8 for interlocking engagement with the cooperating portion 9 because it is apparent that modifications may be made in the form of the fastener means, or a satisfactory fastener means may be provided as part of an ornamental knob mounted upon the flange without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In order to facilitate disengagement of the interlocking means of the frame member and to .improve the appearance of the hand bag structure, I have preferably assembled an ornamental knob means I8 with the flange ll of the attaching member.
The knob means may be of any suitable shape or material and assembled with the flange II in any satisfactory manner. In Figs. 2 and 8 I have shown an ornamental knob means having a substantially rectangular cross-section secured to the flange II through means of attaching members I9 (Fig. 8) extending through apertures 20 (Figs. 1 and 7) in the flange into the body .of the IS. In Figs. 9 through 11 I have shown another form of knob member which preferably comprises a substantially plate-like portion 2| having a groove 22 formed in its bottom face with converging side walls 23 extending the length of the knob 2| adjacent the groove 22 so as to provide a channel. is properly positioned with its ends terminating short of the outer ends of the channel. indentations are formed in the material of one of the side walls 23 adjacent the groove 22 between the outer ends of the flange II and the open ends of the channel providing projections 24 extending into the channel (Fig. 11) so as to limit lengthwise movement of the flange relative to the channel in either direction. As a result of this construction, the knob means is securely affiXBd to the attaching member and is conveniently actuated for disengaging the interlocking means which hold the frame members in closed position.
Assembly of my first form of attaching member with the frame member is a relatively simple matter and, in most cases, may be carried out by hand through moving the foot portion l3 into the aperture 1 of the flange and exerting force in a downward direction upon the flange II or an ornamental knob means mounted upon the same to move the foot portion |3 toward the bottom wall 6 of the frame member. As a resultof the fact that the distance between the outermost edges of .the legs I4 is greater than the lengthwise dimension of the aperture 1 the legs I4 are contracted toward each other until the diverging edges of the legs have passed through the aperture, at which time the legs expand so as to engage the shoulders I5 behind the material of the flange '1 adjacent the aperture 1 as most clearly shown in Fig. 3. When the attaching member is in final attached position with the frame member I, a broad surface of the plate I preferably engages the longitudinal side of the flange 1 nearest the inner wall and broad surfaces of the projections |6| 6 engage material of the flange 1 adjacent the opposite side of the aperture l as most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5. As a result of the fact that the projections I6-| 6 engage material of the flange 1 adjacent the outer side of the aperture 1 the plate H] is yieldable toward and away from the legs l4 when pressure is exerted upon the operating flange II or a knob means mounted on the same whereby the hook-shaped portion I! may be engaged with;
or disengaged from the cooperating fastener ,element 9 of the frame member 2. The foot portion I3 is positioned within the channel of the frame member I when the attaching member is in final position and may engage either the wall 4 or the wall 6 of the frame member to aid in maintaining the attaching member in fixed assembly within the channel of the frame member.
My modified form of attaching member shown in Figs. 12-15 is particularly adaptable for use-1 with frame members which are identical in form to the frame members and 2 illustrated in Figs. 1-5, but instead of providing a single rectangular aperture in the flange 1 of the frame member for receiving the attaching portions of the attach-;-
ing member, I have provided a pair of spaced rectangular-shaped apertures 25, each of which is adapted to receive one attaching portion of the attaching member, as will be described. My
modified form of attaching member illustrated in Figs. 13-15 comprises a pair of spaced plate portions 26 connected at one of their ends by an ornament-supporting flange portion 21 extending in substantially rectangular relation to Each ofthe plate portions 26 has a base portion 28 (Fig. 14) at its lower end having a foot portion 29 extending away from the plate 26 in an opposite direction to that taken by the flange portion An attaching portion in the form'of a leg 30- Next,-
, extends upwardly from. the base 28 on the inner side of each of theplate portions 26 and in spaced relation to its respective plate portion whereby the attaching portions may yield laterally relative to the same during movement through the apertures 25. The planes of the legs 30 are normally ofiset relative to the planes of the plate 26 to permit yielding of the plate portions back and forth relative to the legs for the purpose described in connection with my first form of attaching member. At the free ends of the legs 30 I have provided shoulders 3| adapted to engage material of the flange 1 adjacent the ends of apertures 25 in the mannerof the shoulders 15 of my first form of attaching member, and projecting portions 32 adapted to engage material adjacent a side of the apertures 25 for performing the same function as that carried out by the projecting portions I6 of my preferred attaching member. In assembling my modified form with the frame member I, the foot portions 2a are moved into the apertures 25 and pressure is exerted upon the attaching member to force the foot portions downwardly into the channel of the frame member. During this action, the inner edges of the legs 30 engage material of the frame 1 adjacent the inner ends of the apertures 25, and as a result of the fact that the said inner edges diverge toward their ends connected with the foot portions 29, the legs yield laterally relative to the plate portions 26 until their inner edges have passed through the apertures 25, at which, time they expand to engage the shoulders 3| behind the material of the flange 1 adjacent the apertures 25, as most clearly shown in Fig. 14. modified attaching member is in final assembly with the frame I, broad surfaces of the' plate portions 26 preferably engage one side of the apertures 25 and broad surfaces of the projecting portions 32 engage an opposite side (Fig. 15) permitting relative movement of the plate portions 26 relative to the legs 30 when pressure is exerted upon the operating flange 21 or a knob means 33 which may be'mounted on the flange (Fig. 13) for engaging and disengaging cooperating interlocking means of the attaching member and the frame member 2 in the manner described in connection with my first form of invention.
As a result of my invention, I have provided attaching members which may be fixed in assembly with a bag frame member through simply snapping portions of the attaching member through an apertured portion of the frame member. Thus I am enabled by my invention to assemble a preformed attaching member directly with a frame member without the necessity of performing any further operations upon the parts such as the well-known difficult and slow assembly of a hinge pin and/or a torsion spring. Furthermore, my fastener members are of simple and inexpensive construction and in every way capable of efficiently cooperating to hold a pair of frame members in detachable locked position.
I am aware that changes and modifications could be made in the forms of the attaching members and frame members with which I have chosen to illustrate my invention Without departing from the scope and spirit of my invention and so I do not wish to be limited by the preferred embodiments of my invention illustrated and described because the scope of my invention is best set forth in the following claims.
I claim:

and snap fastener means associated with said element including a yieldable attaching portion adapted to be inserted through said opening and of a character normally larger than the opening whereby the attaching portion may be passed through the opening and will tend to restore itself to its original condition thereby engaging the material of the frame member to be retained therein, and providing for lateral yield to effect the aforesaid movable cooperative engagement.

In a fastener structure for bag frames and the like having-cooperating frame members one of which has an opening therethrough of predetermined dimensions, a fastener element carried by the apertured member for movable coopera tive engagement with the other member, and snap fastener means associated with said element including a fastener plate having yieldable anchor means connected thereto adapted to be inserted through said opening and of a character normally larger than said opening whereby the yieldable anchor means will contract during passage through the opening and thereafter expand into locking engagement with the material of the frame members adjacent said opening, and providing for lateral yield to effect the aforesaid movable cooperative engagement.

In a fastener structure for bag frames and the like having cooperating frame members one of which has an opening therethrough of predetermined dimensions, a fastener element carried by the apertured member for cooperative engagement with the other member, and snap fastener means associated with said element including a fastener plate having yieldable anchor means connected thereto adapted to beinserted through said opening and of a character normally larger than said opening whereby the yieldable anchor means will contract during passage through the opening and thereafter expand into locking engage ment with the material of the frame members adjacent said opening, said yieldable anchor means lying in planes offset from and angularly related to the plane of the fastener carrying plate to yieldingly urge the fastener member toward engaging position with its cooperating other member.

In a fastener structure for a bag frame having cooperating frame members one of which has an opening therethrough of predetermined dimensions, a fastener element carried by the apertured member for movable cooperative engagement with the other member, and means for securing said fastener element to said apertured frame member comprising a plate-like portion adapted to be inserted through said opening and disposed in angular relation to said fastener element, and yieldable anchoring means extending from said plate-like portion and spaced from said fastener element and of a character normally larger than said opening whereby said plate-like portion and anchor means may be passed through said opening, and the anchor means will tend to be restored to its original condition engaging the material of the frame to be retained therein, and providing for lateral yield to effect the aforesaid movable cooperative engagement.

In a fastener structure for a bag frame having cooperating frame members one of which has an opening therethrough of predetermined dimensions, a fastener element carried by the apertured member for cooperative engagement with the other member, and means for securing said fastener element to said apertured frame member comprising a plate-like portion adapted to be inserted through said opening and disposed in angular relation to said fastener element, and yieldable anchoring means extending from the opposite end of the plate-like portion in divergent relation thereto and in a plane offset therefrom and of a character normally larger than said opening whereby said plate-like portion and anchor means may be passed through said opening, and the anchor means will tend to be restored to its original condition engaging the material of the frame to be retained therein.
6. In a fastener structure for bag frames and the like having cooperating channel-shaped frame members atleast one of which is formed with an aperture therein of predetermined dimensions, a fastener element carried by the apertured frame member for cooperative engagement with the other member, and means for securing said fastener member to the apertured frame member comprising a plate-like portion disposed in angular relation thereto and adapted to be inserted through said opening, an angularly extending foot portion engaging the bottom of said channeled frame member formed on said platelike portion at the end opposite the fastener element, and yieldable leg means extending from the foot end of the plate-like portion in divergent relation thereto, and adapted to be snapped into engagement with the material of the frame after passage through said aperture, said plate-like portion and associated fastener element being yieldable transversely relative to said leg means.
