This invention relates to a combined cosmetic cabinet and illuminated mirror.

It is an object of this invention to provide a combined cosmetic cabinet and illuminated mirror which is relatively simple and inexpensive from the manufacturing standpoint, compact, rugged and durable in construction and pleasing in appearance.

A further object is to provide a cabinet specifically for receiving cosmetics, having an article receiving drawer and an internal article receiving shelf in which means are provided for manipulating the shelf in response to the opening of the drawer to. project the articles thereon at least partially beyond the walls of the cabinet so that they may be placed in a position readily available for use or removal and replacement.

Another object is-to provide a cabinet of the character stated, having a closure panel and an internal article eceiving shelf in which means are provided for simultaneously manipulating the closure panel and the shelf to project the articles on the shelf at least partially beyond the walls of the cabinet so that they may be placed in a repl V nt,

An er object is to provide a cabinet of the character stated having an article receiving drawer, a closure panel and an internal article receiving shelf in which means are provided for manipulating the closure panel in response to the opening and closing of the drawer so that articles on the shelf and in the drawer may be simultaneously made available for use.

35 Another object resides in the provision of a cabinet having an article receivingdrawer, an internal article receiving shelf and a lid overlying said shelf in which means are provided for manipulating the shelf and lid in response to the opening of the drawer to project the articles on the shelf at least partially beyond the walls of the cabinet so that they may be placed in a position readily available for use or removal and replacement.

45 A further object is to provide a combined cosmetic cabinet and illuminated mirror in which the cabinet is provided with an article receiving drawer arranged to control the energization of the means employed forilluminating the mirror.

Applicants invention further contemplates the provision of a compact make-up cabinet having as a part thereof a mirror and means behind the mirror for indirectly illuminating the face of the user seated in front of the cabinet and for illuminating the mirror substantially solely by .2 pos1%1;eadily available for use or removal and means of light reflected from the face ofthe user so seated.

A further object of applicants invention is to provide a combined "make-up cabinet and illuminated mirror of the above stated character 5 in which means are provided for controlling the illuminating means in response to the opening and closing of the cabinet.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

As shown in the drawings for illustrative purposes, a cosmetic cabinet constructed in accordance with the invention comprises a sheet metal stamping 2, Fig. '7, bent or otherwise formed to provide a base 4 and opposite side walls 6 and 8. A stamped sheet metal plate or panel is secured, as by welding or otherwise, to the base 4 and the side walls 6 and 8, to form a rear wall ID. The forward edges of the side walls 6 and 8 are inclined, preferably at an angle of substantially forty-five (45) degrees, and to these 5 inclined edges is secured a stamped sheet metal plate l2 having inwardly bent flanges l4 welded or otherwise secured to the side walls 6 and 8, the plate l2 forming a front panel of the cabinet.

The base 4 is provided with spaced supporting feet I6 which may be formed by striking out or depressing portions of the base, or by cementing or otherwise securing suitably shaped pieces of cushioning material to said base.

A sheet metal stamping I8 is bent or otherwise formed to provide a drawer 26 having a base 22 and side walls 24 and 26. The drawer 26 is slidably supported upon the base 4 of the cabinet by noiseless guides and tracks. 28 and 36. The guides 28 preferably comprise substantially c shaped metal channels snugly receiving the outwardly turned flanges 32 of the channel shaped tracks 36 supported on the base 4 by the trough shaped sheet metal angle irons 34, welded or otherwise fastened to the base4. The guides 28 are similarly secured, preferably by spot welding, to the bottom .22 of the drawer.

A lid or closure means 36 comprises a sheet metal plate or panel 38 hingedly connected as at 46 to the top of the rear panel or wall I6, and

chromium plated on its lower surface to provide a mirror-like reflecting surface.

The face panel I2 is provided with a central opening to receive a semispherical or parabolic reflector 42, to the rim of which are spot welded or otherwise fastened angularly spaced and radially extending arms or rods 44 which are preferably chromium plated. To the inner ends of these arms 44 is secured a ring or annulus 46 for detachably receiving and supporting a sheet metal ring 48 secured or formed integrally with an annulus 56 having an inwardly turned peripheral rim 52 for clampingly receiving the rim of a disk-like make-up mirror 54. The outer ends of the rods 44 have threaded apertures to receive a screw 45 which attaches to the reflector 42 an angle plate 41 which engages the under surface of the front panel I36, thereby providing means to position the reflector 42 into the front panel.

The bottom of the reflector 42 is extended axially thereof to receive a socket 56 for receiving a lamp or other electrically operated luminous means 58. It should be noted that the make-up mirror 54 is smaller in diameter than the rim of the reflector 42 and accordingly rays of light from the luminous means 58 will be directed by the reflector 42 about the periphery of the mirror into the face of a user seated before the cabinet. The consequent indirect illumination of the mirror solely by the rays of light reflected from the face of the user eliminates shadows and provides in the mirror a sharp and clear image so that cosmetics may be applied evenly and skillfully to obtain the desired effect.

The cabinet is provided with a shelf 66.comprising a sheet metal plate 62 having a plurality of spaced apertures to receive bottles or jars 64, such as a bottle of astringent, a jar of cleansing cream, and a bottle of powder base. Sheet metal straps 66, substantially U shaped in configuration, are provided with outwardly bent flanges 68 spot welded to the shelf 62, the straps 66 supporting the articles inserted in the openings in the plate 62. The plate 62 of the shelf 66 is formed with depending front and rear flanges I6 for' strengthening purposes and to provide a skirt which, when the shelf is in raised position, as shown in Fig. 2, acts as a screen hiding from view the parts in the interior of the cabinet.

The shelf 66 is mounted for vertical reciprocation upon channel shaped angle irons 12 by L shaped brackets 14 riveted to the plate 62 and spot welded or otherwise secured to the angle irons I2. The angle irons I2 are provided with outwardly 13y means of 12 for vertical swinging movement simultaneously ,with the vertical reciprocation of the shelf 66, links 86. Each of the links 86 is pivotally connected at one end, as by a pin 62, to the bracket 14 and at its other end is detachably connected by a pivot pin 84 and a clamping spring or resilient strip 86 to the lug 88 of a bracket 96 pivoted or otherwise secured to the plate .66 of the clflire means 36. The angle irons or operating'members 12 are vertically reciprocated in response to the opening and closing of the drawer 26. For this purpose the side walls 24 and 26 of the drawer 26 are formed to provide laterally directed flanges, each of which comprises a portion 92 substantially parallel to the base 22 of the drawer and parallel to the path of movement of the drawer, and an inclined portion 94, the under surface of the portions 62 and '84 forming a cam surface adapted to be engaged by a cam roller 96 secured to the forward end of a lever 98. Each lever 98 is pivoted at an intermediate point by a pin I66 to aflug I62 formed on or secured to a side wall of the cabinet. The rear ends of the links 98 are prov'fled with arcuate slots to the lower ends of the operating members I2. It will be seen that as the drawer 26 is moved from closed to open position, the inclined portions 94 will cause the levers 88 to be swung in a clockwise direction from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 5, thereby raising the shelf 66 and swinging the lid or closure means 36 to its open position. The horizontal flange portions 92 prevent reverse movement or oscillation of the levers 98 and hence retain the shelf and lid in open position, as shown in Fig. 5. During the closing movement of the drawer, and when the cam roller 96 engages the inclined flange portions 94, the weight of the shelf 66,

I64 to receive pins I66 secured the lid 36 and the weight of the articles on the shelf 66 will through the levers 98 andthe cam roller 96 move the drawer into fully closed position.

The drawer 26 comprises, in addition to the stamping I8, a sheet metal plate or front panel I68 riveted or otherwise secured to the depending flange II6 of the stamping I8 and by angle irons II2 to the side walls 24 and 26 of the drawer. A plate II 4, substantially V shapedin cross section, is mounted within the drawer 26, to which it is secured by welding or otherwise fastening flanges-H6 and H8 to the front plate I68 and the bottom 22. The rear, upwardly extending portion I26 of the plate I I4 is provided with a plurality of openings I 22 to receive and position upon the bottom 22 a set of jars or other containers, such as a box of face powder and jars of face creams. The forward downwardly extending por-- tion I24 of the plate H4 is apertured to receive attaching lugs, such as I26, of suitably shaped receptacles I28 for receiving and positioning in the drawer articles such as a lipstick and con tainers of mascara, rouge and eye shadow.

A portion of the drawer 26 between the plate II 4 and an upstanding flange I36 formed at the rear of the stamping I8 provides a receptacle for receiving a box of cleansing tissue or the like I32 Fig. 2. A handle I34 for manipulating the drawer 26 may be secured to the face plate I 68.

Mirror panels I36 may be cemented or otherwise fused to the -external surface of each wall of the cabinet with the exception of the bottom wall 4, and to the front plate or panel I08 of the drawer 20. Any of these panels or walls of the cabinet may therefore be used as a diifusely illuminated mirror if desired. The under surface of the lid 36, being chromium plated, may also be used as a diffusely illuminated mirror if desired.

The rim of the reflector 42 is rolled or reversely bent over the edge of the front mirror panel I06 about the reflector receiving opening in the plate I2 so as to present a finished appearance and to support the reflector in proper position.

Means are provided for controlling the energization of the luminous means 58 in response to the opening and closing of the drawer 20. This means comprises a switch I38 having a pair of fixed contacts or terminals I40 carried by an insulating plate I42 and a resilient contact or bridging member I44 also carried by the insulating plate. The insulating plate I42 is supported by a generally U shaped strap I46 fastened to the bottom plate 4 of the cabinet and between the side walls 24 and 26 of the drawer 20. The plate I42 is secured to the strap I46 by a lug I48 extending through a suitable slot in the forward end of said strap and by inturned lugs I50 struck out from the strap I46. The switch operating member I52 comprises a strip of sheet metal overlying the insulating plate I42, having an end portion or lug I54 loosely received in a suitable slot in the strap I46 and a down-turned end portion I56 slidably received in and guided by a suitable slot I56 in the insulating plate I42. The outer edges of the strip I52 may be enlarged as at I60 to limit the upward movement of the operating member I52 and to prevent detachment from the switch. An insulating piece or block I62 is slidably received in a suitable opening in the insulating plate I42 and connects the operating member I52 to the spring contacts I44. One of the contacts I40 is connected to one of the terminals of the lamp socket 56; the other contact and the other terminal of the lamp socket 56 are connected to the electrical source.

It will be apparent from the foregoing description that applicant has provided a combined cosmetic cabinet and illuminated mirror which is.

relatively simple and inexpensive from the manufacturing standpoint, compact, rugged and durable in construction and pleasing in appearance; wherein the cabinet has an article receiving drawer, an internal article receiving shelf and a lid overlying said shelf, in which means are provided for manipulating the shelf and lid in response to the opening of the drawer to project the articles on the shelf at least partially beyond the walls of the cabinet so that they may be placed in a position readily available for use or removal and replacement; and wherein the cabinet is provided with an article receiving drawer arranged to control the energization of the means employed for illuminating the mirror.

Changes may bemade in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and the right is hereby reserved to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims. 7

The invention is hereby claimed as follows:

1. In combination, a cabinet adapted to receive cosmetics or the like, a mirror, means for supporting said mirror upon a wall of said cabinet, luminous means behind said mirror, and means for directing light rays from said luminous means about the periphery of said mirror whereby to form an image in said mirror by light rays reflected from an object in front of the mirror.

2. In combination, a cabinet having a drawer adapted to receive cosmetics or the like and shiftable between opened and closed positions, a mirror, means for supporting said mirror upon a wall of said cabinet, luminous means within said cabinet behind said mirror, means for directing light rays from said luminous means about the periphery of said mirror whereby to illuminate an object in front of the mirror, and means operable in response to the shifting of said drawer for controlling said luminous means.

3. In combination, a cabinet having a shelf adapted to receive and'support cosmetics or the like, said shelf being shiftable within the cabinet to and from a position wherein the articles are readily available for use, a mirror, means for supporting said mirror upon said cabinet, luminous means behind said mirror, means for directing light rays from said luminous means about the periphery of said mirror, and means for simultaneously shifting said shelf and operatively controlling said luminous means.

4. In combination, a cabinet having a shelf adapted to receive and support cosmetics or the like, said shelf being shiftable within the cabinet to and from a position wherein the articles are readily available for use, shiftable closure means for said cabinet in the path of movement of said shelf, a mirror, means for supporting said mirror upon said cabinet, luminous means behind said mirror, means for directing light rays from said luminous means about the periphery of said mirror, and means for simultaneously shifting said shelf and said closure means.

5. In combination, a cabinet, one well of the cabinet having an opening therein, a mirror, luminous means within said cabinet and behind said opening, a semiconoidal reflector for said luminous means mounted withinsaid opening, and a mirror partially covering said reflector to form an annular light transmitting opening about said mirror, thereby permitting illumination of an object in front of the mirror.

6. In combination, a cabinet adapted to receive cosmetics or the like, said cabinet having an inclined face panel with an opening therein, a mirror within said opening and in the plane of said face panel, luminous means within said cabinet behind said opening, and a semiconoidal reflector for said luminous means mounted within said cabinet in a position to be partially covered by said mirror thereby to form an annular light transmitting opening about the mirror to permit illuminationof an object in front of the mirror.

'1. In combination, a cabinet, one wall of the cabinet having an opening therein, a mirror, luminous means within said cabinet and behind said opening, a semiconoidal reflector for said luminous means mounted within said opening, a mirror partially covering said reflector to form an annular light transmitting opening about said mirror thereby permitting illumination of an object in front of the mirror, and a mirror panel secured to and covering said wall of the cabinet about said opening. i

8. A cabinet adapted to receive cosmetics 'or the like comprising a shell forming a cabinet supporting bottom wall, side walls and an in:

clined front wall, and wall covering mirror panels secured in overlying contacting relation to said side and front walls.

9. A cabinet adapted to receive cosmetics or and mirror panels cemented the like comprising a shell forming a cabinet supporting bottom wall, a top wall, side walls and an inclined front wall, and wall covering mirror panels secured in overlying contacting relation to said top, side and front walls.

10. A cabinet adapted to receive cosmetics or the like comprising a shell forming a cabinet supporting bottom wall and integral side walls, said side walls having an inclined forward edge, a face plate secured to the shell and extending between the inclined forward edges of the side walls, a rear plate secured to the shell and extending between said side walls, and mirror panels secured to and covering the side walls, the face plate and said rear plate.

11. A cabinet adapted to receive cosmetics or the like comprising a sheet metal stamping forming a cabinet supporting bottom wall and integral side walls, said side walls each having an inclined forward edge, a sheet metal face plate secured to and extending between said side walls at the inclined forward edges thereof, a sheet metal rear plate secured to the side walls and extending between the rear edges of said walls, to the side walls, the face plate and the rear plate.

12. A cabinet adapted to receive cosmetics or the like, comprising a shell forming a cabinet supporting bottom wall, side walls and an inclined front wall, mirror panels secured in contacting relation to and overlying said side and front walls, said front wall and the mirror panel secured thereto having an opening therein, a reflector within said opening and extending into said cabinet, said reflector having a reversely turned rim overlying the edge of said opening, a mirror detachably mounted on said reflector and partially covering said reflector to form an annular light transmitting opening about said mirror, luminous means within said reflector behind said mirror, and a drawer shiftably mounted in said shell beneath the inclined front wall.

13. A cabinet adapted to receive cosmetics or the like, comprising a shell forming a cabinet supporting bottom wall, side walls and an inclined front wall, mirror panels secured in contacting relation to and overlying said side and front walls, said front wall and the mirror panel secured thereto having an opening therein, a reflector within said opening and extending into said cabinet, said reflector having a reversely turned rim overlying the edge of said opening, a mirror detachably mounted on said reflector and partially covering said reflector to form an annular light transmitting opening about said mirror, luminous means within said reflector behind said mirror, and a shelf shiftably mounted in said cabinet to and from a position wherein articles carried by said shelf are projected beyond the top of said cabinet.

14. A cabinet adapted to receive cosmetics or the like, comprising a shell forming a cabinet supporting bottom wall, side walls and an inclined front wall, mirror panels secured in contacting relation to and overlying said side and front walls, said front wall and the mirror panel secured thereto having an opening therein, a resaid cabinet, turned rim overlying the edge of said opening, a mirror detachably mounted on said reflector and partially covering said reflector to form an annular light transmitting opening about said mirror, luminous means within said reflector becles carried by said shelf are projected beyond the top of said cabinet, shiftable closure means for the top of said cabinet in the path of movement of said shelf, and means for simultaneously shifting said shelf and said closure means.

15. A cabinet adapted to receive cosmetics or the like, comprising a shell forming a cabinet supporting bottom wall, side walls and an inclined front wall, mirror panels secured in contacting relation to and overlying said side and front walls, said front wall and the mirror panel secured thereto having an opening therein, a reflector within said opening and extending into said reflector having a reversely turned rim overlying the edge of said opening, a mirror detachably mounted on said reflector and partially covering said reflector to form an annular light transmitting opening about said mirror, luminous means within said reflector behind said mirror, and a drawer shiftably mounted in said shell beneath the inclined front wall, said drawer having means therein formed to position containers of. cosmetics or said drawer and providing a space behind said means for receiving a container of cleansing tissue or the like.

16, In a cabinet, a slidable drawer, a swingable lid, a cam track on said drawer, and means including a cam follower engaging said cam track for swinging said lid upon sliding of said drawer.

17. In a cabinet, a slidable drawer, a swingable lid, a pivoted lever, a roller carried by said lever, a reciprocable member connected to said lever, a link connecting said lid to said member, and a cam track formed on said drawer and engaging link pivotally connected to said member, means comprising a resilient strip carried by said link for detachably connecting the link to the lid, and a cam track formed on said drawer and engaging said roller to operate said lever whereby to swing said lid upon opening anl closing of said drawer.

19. In a cabinet, a slidable drawer, a shiftable article receiving shelf, and means for shifting said shelf upon opening of said drawer and for automatically closing said drawer upon initiation of its movement in a closing direction under the weight of the shelf and the articles thereon.
