Description
0. P. LEIMER &'L. W. KEMPF. Combined Knife, Compass, &0.
No. 219,741. Patented Sept. 16,1879.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR: /60/47W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. LEIMER AND LUDWIG W., KEMPF, OF DEADWOOD, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED KNIFE, COMPASS, 84c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,741, dated September 16, 1879 application filed April 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES F. LEIMER and LUDWIG W. KEMPF, of Deadwood, in the county of Lawrence and Territory of Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Prospectors Knife, of which the following is a specification.
The drawing represents a side elevation of the device.
The object of this invention is'to furnish a device that shall be of especial service to miners and prospectors, herders, hunters, Sue.
The invention consists in a device provided with a knife, A, having one or more blades, of a compass, B, set in thelxandle, a magnifyingglass, 0, pivoted in the butt of the handle, a combined pencil-holder and two-inch rule, D, fixed to the back of the knife, and a pencil, E, set in the holder.
The knife itself may be of the ordinary style; but the lining, rivets, springs, and tips must- -be of other material than iron or steelsuch,
for instance, as brass or copperso that they may not effect the free magnetic action of the compass-needle to any considerable or injurious extent, nor must the mountings of the compass or the magnifying-glass, nor the pencil-holder and rule, be of a substance materially to affect the needle; but, preferably, these all may be made of horn, hard rubber, brass, or some other suitable material, the object bein g to have the device as free as possible from iron or steel.
The compass is an ordinary small compass with a heavy glass set in any part of the handle, with its north and south points pointing, respectively, to the butt and end of the handle.
The magnifying-glass will serve also as a sun-glass for lighting pipes or fires.
The pencil-holder is to be round, so as to 1.0ld an ordinary round pencil, and is to be two inches or (thereabout) long, with the usual marks for inches and subdivisions thereof etched or engraved thereon. That side of the knife-handle opposite the compass is to have a plate fixed to it bearing the words Prospectors Companion.
It will be readily seen that the device is not heavier than an-ordinary pocket-knife, that it will occupy no more room, and that the combination of knife, compass, magnifying-glass, rule, and pencil in one makes them much more convenient to carry.
Provided with this, a miner or prospector, when'he has located a claim, may stake his lines by the compass, measure thevdepth of his shaft by the rule, write his location notice with the pencil, examine specimens of the ore with the glass, and use the glass for making a fire or lighting his pipe. I
Thus it will be seen this simple device may be made to serve most of the direct necessities of the miner and prospector.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A miner"s knife having a compass, B, arranged at the side, a pivoted magnifying-glass at the rear end, and a pencil-holder, D, at the back, as shown and described.
CHARLES FREDERICK LEIMER.
LUDWIG WILLIAM KEMPF.
