1 Claim.
The invention relates to an anchoring stake and more especially to an umbrella anchor.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein through the arrangement of screw threads formed on the stake the same can be conveniently anchored in the ground for the coupling therewith of an umbrella, the latter being useable on beaches, lawns or other localities and the stake is conveniently worked into the ground and removed therefrom.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the stake carries a handle swingingly supported thereon which is adaptable for conveniently working the stake into the ground or from the same for the purposes of anchoring an umbrella or the like.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, readily and easily anchored in or removed from a foundation, and inexpensive to manufacture. 1
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of an anchor constructed in accordance with the invention in association with an umbrella.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary enlarged side elevation of the anchor.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally an umbrella serviceable for use upon a beach, lawn or other locality and its stalf I0 is detachably coupled through the medium of a cou- .pling sleeve H with an anchoring device constituting the present invention and hereinafter fully described.
The anchoring device comprises a stake or stem l2 having a threaded lower end 13 forming an auger tip so that the anchoring device can be readily worked into the ground or removed there- Mercer, Gary, Ind.
1939, Serial No. 292,734
from, the anchoring being disclosed in Figure 1 of the drawing and the foundation denoted at M.
Accommodated within a counterseat l5 provided in the outer periphery of the stake or stem i2 is a vertically swingable handle constituted by an outwardly arched elongated lever or channeled piece Hi having a furcated pivot end creating spaced pivot ears il accommodating a pivot i8 which is mounted transversely in the stake or stem !2 and in this manner the said handle is vertically swingable to lie within the counterseat it or be extended at right angles to the axis of the stake or stem l2 and in this latter position the said stake 01' stem can be readily screwed into the foundation M or unscrewed therefrom.
The coupling sleeve ll permits the separable connection of the staff it with the stake or stem E2. The handle when within the counterseat I5 is in normal position and is substantially flush with the outer periphery of the said stake or stem H2.
The coupling sleeve M is so fastened on the staff ll) so that the socket created by this sleeve is of sufficient depth to have the sleeve overlap the counterseat i5. in the stake or stem l2 when the latter is coupled with the staff Ill and in this manner the handle I6 can be latched in the counterseat I5 and thus preventing the said handle from dropping down accidentally from the raised position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3 of the drawing to a horizontal position shown by full lines in said figure. When the sleeve ll rides from over the counterseat E5, the handle Hi can be brought from the dotted line position to the full line position shown in Figure 3 of the drawing.
The counterseat I5 accommodates the handle it when in the raisedv position so that this will be flush with the peripheral face of the said stake or stem l2 and thus not protrude.
What is claimed is:
An anchor for an umbrella having a staff, comprising a stake for matching the staff and engageable therewith in end to end relationship: and having a threaded augerlike tip remote from the end engagement of said stake with the staff, a sleevelike member fixed to the staff and projected beyond the end engageable with said stake for creating a socket slidably receiving said stake, and a swingable handle connected with said stake and counterseated therein close to the end of said stake engageable in said sleevelike member for the socketing of the handle therein when socketing the said stake maintaining the handle counterseated in the latter.
