Description

O 1940- w. TAMOSCHAT CONTAINER Filed Dec. 23. 1959 Jlgi.
30 INVENTOR.
VV/LL/AM TAMoscHA T ATTORNEY.
Patented Oct. 22, 1940 PATENT OFFICE CONTAINER William Tamoschat, New York, N. Y., assignor to David H. Zell, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application December 23, 1939, Serial No. 310,796
6 Claims,
This invention relates to containers such as cigarette cases, vanity cases or the like, of that type in which the container comprises two complementary relatively movable sections and is provided with slide fastener closure means for the case sections.
It is the primary object and purpose of the present invention to provide simply constructed g means embodied in the parts of each case section, whereby the said parts together with a slide fastener tape may be easily, quickly and securely connected in properly assembled relation, and all liability of the fastener tape becoming detached or separated under severe strain, precluded.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a case or container section having a continuous marginal frame member and a side wall provided with a metallic edge trimstrip, said frame member and trim strip having coacting interlocking means which also coacts with one edge of the slide fastener tape to securely hold the latter in connected relation with the case section.
It is also a further general object of the invention to provide a container or case as above characterized, in which the several parts thereof may be fabricated and expeditiously assembled by unskilled labor at comparatively low production cost, and in which the relation between the parts of the case structure and the slide fastener presents a neat and attractive appearance and said fastener may be operated with ease. and facility to open or close the case.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved container, and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of its several parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.
In the drawing wherein I have illustrated one simple and practical embodiment of the invention and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a cigarette or vanity case embodying my present invention.
Fig, 2 is a vertical section as indicated by the line 2-2 on Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section on an enlarged scale, of one of the case sections.
Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section through the hinge connection between the case sections.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a slightly modified construction.
Fig. 6 is a detail fragmentary elevation of the fastener tape shown in Fig. 5, and
Fig. 7 is a side elevation partly in section of one of the case sections showing another alternative construction.
For purposes of illustration, I have shown a container or case of rectangular form, though it will be apparent, as this description proceeds, that my invention is also applicable to containers of circular or other desired ornamental shapes. 10
The container comprises two complementary sections, which in the present instance are of substantially the same structural form. Thus each of these container sections includes a continuous marginal frame member 5 having outer and inner side walls 6 and 1 respectively and a base wall 8, said frame thus being of substantially U-shaped form in cross section.
Each of the frame members 5 is closed at the open side of its channel 9 by a side wall of the case section. As herein shown this side wall may include an inner relatively stiff sheet of cardboard or other suitable material Ill and an outer facing sheet H of leather or other decorative flexible material. If desired a yieldable padding material I2 may be interposed between the cardboard l0 and the facing sheet II. The parts l0 and II are tightly bound together by a metallic trim strip having the inwardly opening U-shaped portion 13 which is tightly clinched upon the superimposed edges of the parts Ill and H. In inwardly spaced relation from said edges, the trim strip is provided with a continuous flange l4 extending at right angles to the plane of said side wall of the case section, and terminating at its edge in a nar- 35,
row inwardly projecting flange l5.
The inner" side wall I of the frame member 5 is provided at longitudinally spaced points with tongues or lugs l6 projecting therefrom into the channel 9. The outer wall 6 of each frame memher 5 has a hinge plate I! integrally connected therewith at the open side of the channel 9. These plates extend for a predetermined distance along one side of each frame member and are hingedly connected with each other as at I8.
With each of the case sections a flexible tape of fabric or other material indicated at 19 is connected, the respective tapes carrying complementary interlocking slide fastener elements 20 with which the conventional operating slide shown at 2| cooperates. In assembling the parts of the case section, the tape 15 is arranged over the outer side wall 6 of the frame 5 with the fastener elements 20 at the outer side of said frame wall, The other edge of the tape I5 is folded downwardly into the 9 into said channel.
frame channel '9. The side wall of the case section is then placed in position and the flange I I of the metal edge strip moved downwardly upon the tape The fabric tape will be caught and tightly compressed between the flange or lip 15 and the inwardly projecting tongues 16 on the frame wall I, said flange I being slightly sprung outwardly from its normal position as the lip I5 is forced below said tongues. These tongues are so located, and the flange I4 is of such depth, that when said flange resumes its normal condition the fabric tape will be tightly pinched and held'between the lip l5 and the lugs IS on the inner wall of the frame. The tape will also be closely confined between the flange l4 and the outer'frame wall and tightly compressed between the upper edge of said wall and the inner face of the part iii of the metal trim strip. Thus it will be apparent that the slide fastener tape is very securely held in attached relation to the two parts of the case section so that the slide fastener elements 20 will at all times be positioned in proper relation to the frame member 5 for interlocking connection with the fastener elements of the tape on the other case section.
In the present instance, I have shown a mirror 22 in Fig. 3 disposed upon the inner face of the part III of the side wall and having its edge confined between said part and the edge of the inner wall 7 of the frame member. A cosmetic holding tray (not shown) may be inserted within the frame member 5 of the other case section. However, it will be understood that the latter are nonessential features and would be provided only in the use of my present invention. in connection with vanity cases or compacts.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing I have shown a slight modification in which the inner edge of the fastener tape 9 may be provided with a reenf'oreing bead of wire or other material as shown at 23. This bead being of slightly larger diameter than the thickness ofthe tape precludes the possibility of the edge of the tape being pulled from between the lip I5 and the lug l6 when said tape is subjected to excessive strains.
Also, for they purpose of affording additional security of the tape connection, I may provide the free edge of the outer wall 6 of the frame 5 with spaced teeth shown at 24in Fig. 7 of the drawing. Thus when the parts of the case sec tion are assembled in the manner above described, these teeth will penetrate the tape fabric and'thereby effectively prevent stretching of the fabric between the lip l5 and the edge of the wall 6.
When the case is closed the base walls 8 of the two frame members 5 are in substantial contact. By then moving the slide 2| in one direction, the elements 20 on the two fastener tapes are securely interlocked with each other as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawing. It is thus apparent that the present invention enables the slide fastener type of closure means to be applied to a comparatively flat or shallow case. It will also be noted that the interlocking elements 20 as well as the operating slide 2| are positioned within the outer edges of the metal edge or trim strips I3 on the opposite side walls of the case. This adds to the neat and attractive appearance of the case as a whole.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction as well as the several advantages of my present invention will be clearly understood. It will be seen that I have provided a case or container of this character having slide fastener closure means, which is of such construction, that the parts of the case sections and the fastener tapes can be expeditiously assembled by unskilled labor, with the assurance of absolute security in the connection of the fastener tape to the case sections. In the foregoing description and the accompanying drawing, I have disclosed practical embodiments of the invention which have given very satisfactory service. However, it will be understood that in the many possible applications of the essential features of the present disclosure, certain mechanical changes may be found advisable. Accordingly, it is to be understood that I reserve the privilege .of resorting to such legitimate modifications in structural detail as may fairly be comprehended as within the a spirit and scope of the appended claims.
