' The invention relates to footwear and more especially to sandals. a

The primary object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character wherein the sole area is divided transversely so as to have a toe portion hinged at the dividing area and thereby providing flexibility of the sandal when being worn to assure comfort, the hinging` of the toe portion being of novel construction.

Another object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character wherein' the sole, toe and heel as well as the arch area are made from fibrous material, such as Wood, and this Wooden body is divided transversely along the sole area to permit flexing of the toe portion, the hinge connecting the toe portion being made from a leather or flexible strap divided along the longer edges thereof for effecting an overlap with respect to the fasteners securing the said strap in place and in this way concealing the fasteners and avoiding injury therefrom when wearing the sandal.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient for comfortable wearing, neat in appearance, durable and inexpensive to manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in theclaim hereunto appended.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sandal constructed in accordance with the invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail wherein a practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated, a sandal embodying the present inventionV is indicated generally at A and includes a heel end I 0, a sole area II and a toe end I2, respecend I0, sole area I I and toe end I2 constructed from fibrous material, preferably wood. The upper face of the sandal A is properly concaved, as at I4 and I5, respectively, for conforming to the bottom surface of la foot of a wearer for assuring comfort and maintaining proper tread in the wearing of the sandal.

Interposed between the heel end I0 and the toe end I2 in the under face of the sandal A is an arch I6 creating an instep portion I1, this being conventional.

Next to the slit I3 transversely of the sandal A in the upper face of the sole area II and the toe end I2 is countersunk a hinge member preferably an elongated flexible strap uI8 made from leather, although it may be made from any other suitable material. This strap I8 at its longer edges is slitted inwardly through the free longitudinal edges thereof to provide base attaching flanges I9 and overlapping iianges 20, respectively. The flanges I9 have passed therethrough suitable fasteners 2|, which secure the strap to the sole area II and the toe end I2 for hinging the latter in place while the overlapping flanges 20 are disposed over the heads 22 of the fasteners 2l concealing these and protecting a foot of the wearer of the sandal from injuryl which might be inflicted in the wearing of thez sandal if the fasteners were exposed and susceptible of contact with the bottom of the foot during the wearing of such sandal. The flanges 20 overlie the fasteners 2| and the outer faces of these flanges are substantially flush with the upper surfaces of the sole area II and the toe end I2, being effective as cushions or pads so that no injury can result from the `fasteners 2'I making contact with the bottom of the foot ofthe wearer.

Engaged transversely through suitable passages provided in` the sole area II and toe end I2 is a tie lacing o r cord 23,.which is adapted for the fastening of the toe e'nd of the sandal to the foot of the wearer. The ,heel end III has provided transversely therein a suitable passage or bore for a terminally `looped lacing or cord 24, the terminal loops being indicated at 25 and have trained therethrough aheel lacing or cord 2li so as to hold the latter about the ankle of the foot of the wearer to avoid the release of the heel In a. sandal, comprising a sole 0f rigid matey rial formed of a toe section and a separate heel section having straight walls abutting, a pliable strip countersunk in to the upper faces of the sections adjacent the abutting edges and having splits on its edges forming double aps at each edge, means passing through the lower flaps into the toe and heel sections and the upper iiaps covering said securing means and said flaps having their upper faces in a plane with the upper faces of the toe and heel sections.
