Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE BERIAH DOUGLAS, OF APPLETON, VISCONSIN.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,858, dated February 8, 1859.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERIAH DOUGLAS, of the city of Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ofV this specication, in which- Fignre l is a perspective view of the machine; Fig. 2 a top view of the washing tub; Fig. 3 a lateral View of the washing rocker with its seat and foot box attached.
The washing tub A, is made boXlike, about 31 inches long, 18 wide, and l2 deep inside, and is set on 4 legs l0 inches high, for drawing off water, and for other convenience. The fore end is beveled over to make room for the foot boX F, on the floor of the washing rocker B, which is fitted to work easy in the whole bigness of the tub, and consists of two rocking pieces B, with many cross bars G, fastened to their circular base edges, and a bevel floor on their straight top edge.
Over the hind part of the Hoor is the washing seat H, fixed on standards B, and much depressed in the middle, to keep the operator in place when rocking. The best seat is made of soft leather or cloth.
On the fore part of the floor is the foot box F, to rest the feet in, and keep them dry when washing.
On each side of the tub near the fore end, is a hand supporter C, standing upright about 22 inches high, to hold by in operating the machine. In the corners are guide pieces to keep the rocker in place. Near the bottom is an inch hole and cork stopper D, for letting out water. In the back edge is the clothes holder E, for wringing, made of brass or iron rod bent in crank form, and set Vertical, to double clothes around so as to wring with bot-h hands together, and have all the water drop into the tub. It can be turned aside or removed when not wanted, as can also the hand supporters.
To wash clothes or bedding with this machine, a considerable quantity is laid level in the tub, with a suitable portion of suds, and the rocker is placed on them. Then the operator steps into the foot boX, sits on the seat, takes hold `of the hand supporters, and rocks quite forward and back alternately, thus easily applying the whole weight of the person and rocker, to frequently compress all the parts in succession, and perfectly wash without wearing them away.
My claim is not for the tub nor rocker described, which are novel only in part, but
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The washing seat and the foot boX as combined with the washing rocker, and the hand supporters, and the clothes holder for wringing, as combined with the washing tub, all for the purposes herein assigned to them.
