Description

UNITED sTETEs PATENT oEEioE.
NELSON w. NORTHRUP, oF GREENE, NEw YORK.
STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,886, dated February 8., 1859.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON W. NORTHRUP, of Greene, in the county of Chenango, in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cooking-Stove; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact `description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar construction and application of the coal box or drawer and the manner of adjusting it with keys, also the front fire plate used instead of doors in the usual way, also of extending the partition or division plates between the ovens, for the purpose of equalizing the heat upon the upper oven, and also in dividing the dampers, which when turned off admits the fire .between the ovens, but when turned on or closed compels the heat to go around and under the lower oven and up in front and back through between t-he ovens, and also of curving the corners of the lower oven to give a more free passage to the heat and at the same time retain more heat than with the square corners and also by introducing a false or loose-plate, which rests on the top or edge of the tire box, for covering the space which surrounds the fire box to prevent coal or other articles from falling down outside the fire box, and furnishing a hot air chamber which serves materially to equalize and supply the required heat to the ovens.
'Io enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention.I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, the same letters on the different figures refer-ring to the same parts, in which- Figure l, is a front view; A, the hearth; B, the space for the lire box, or drawer B, Fig. 4; C, the dovetail and key which secures the front fire plate in its place or to the rabbet C, C; D, D, the holdfasts for the hearth; E, the cra-nk or lever to the i dampers.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the stove and the flues, the arrows indicating the course of the draft, and the dampers E, and the back' flue G.
Fig.,3, shows the inside of the back part of the stove. The flues H, H, extend from the top of the stove, down to the top plate of the lower oven. The dampers I, I, are used for a twofold purpose-first when bot-h are turned back against the back plate of the stove, will cause the fire to pass around t-he inner ends of the division or partition plates K, as indicated by the arrows Q, K, Fig. 2, which is the division plate, forming the flues H, H, Fig. 3. This plate is intended to extend in three fourths of the dis tance from the back of the stove to the frontpart vof the upper oven for the purpose of better equalizing the heat upon the bottom of the upper oven.
3, 3, Fig. 5, indicate the bearings for the cranks of the dampers I, I, and J, Fig. 3. Vhen both the dampers I, I, are turned up againstthe upper oven the iire will descend down the back of and under the lower oven, as indicated by the arrows 5, 5, 5, and 2, Fig. 2, through the flue indicated by L, Fig. 3, then through the fine G, at which time the dampers J, is turned up against the plate M, Fig. 2. The vents N, N, Fig. 2, are for the purpose of preventing too great a heat on the guard plate O, and over heating the front part of the upper oven, when wood is used for fuel. Now another important use of the two dampers I, I, and constructing them separately, and also in forming the two lues H, H, is, that if the heat should be greater on one Side of the oven than the other by turning down the damper on that4 side the heat is decreased or increased on either side at pleasure. 6, Fig. 4, the shaftto the coal grate orrocker.-
Fig. 6 shows the manner of making the front plates of both the coal box and the plate for using wood. I make this front plate B2 suiciently loose to allow its expansion when heated, that it will not strain on the front plate of the stove so as to cause it to crack or break.
I claim as my invention in a stove constiucted as hereinbefore described,
The combination and arrangement of the partition K, Fig. 5 with the flues H, H, and dampers I, I, in manner and for the purpose specified.
NELSON W. NORTHRUP.
