TEMPORARY BINDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,195, dated June 22, 1880.

Be it known that I, GHAnLEs SNEIDER, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in theconstruction and arrangement of a hinder or cover for magazines, sheet-music, or other pa I 5 pers, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of my binder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of parts of the same.

In the back B is inserted and fastened a sheet-metal plate, 0, the ends of which are turned upward and then inward, forming, as it were, grooved projec- 0 tions at a, into which the binder D D (with its supplemental back E, shoplders I), hooks h h, and flanges d) is to be moved sidewise.

D D represent the inside or auxiliary covers of the binder, connected by the back E,

and the cover D is provided along three of its edges with flaps I), having suitable tyingstrings, so that the papers attached in the binder can be entirely inclosed, if desired.

At each end of the supplemental back E is 0 fastened a sheet-metal plate, F F, which is struck up, as shown,formin g two parallel shoulders or oifsets, b b, and leaving at the outer end a flange, d, which comes flush with the edge of the back. The cover D is cut off at 5 each end the width of this flange, so that the ends will be flush with the outer shoulders or offsets, b. Theinside cover can then be inserted from one side under the grooved projections a of the plate 0, attached to the outside cover,

thus securing the two together, while at the same time the inside cover can be easily and quickly removed when desired.

In one of the plates, F, of the inside cover are fastened a number of long hooks, h, which project through the shoulder or offset at one end and extend inward over the raised portion of the plate, the end of each hook being slightly bent upward. In the other plate, F, are an equal number of similar books, It; but these latter hooks are not stationary. The under arm of each hook it is elongated and passes through perforations in the two shoulders I) b, and the extreme inner end is either bent or enlarged, so that the hook cannot be pulled out entirely, but only a certain distance.

In attaching a magazine or any other doubled paper the hook h is drawn out and the middle of the paper slipped under the corresponding stationary hook h, after which the hook h is pushed in again, so as to come in the middle of the paper at the bottom, thus holding the paper in place.

When sheet-music or other single sheets of paper are to be fastened the hooks h h are made by simply doubling a piece of sheet metal around each hook. The edge of the paper is then inserted between the two plates of metal, which hold it sufficiently firm.

This invention is applicable for binding mag- 80 aziues and other papers, music, &c.,forscrapbooks, indexes, and many other purposes where temporary binding is desirable.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 8 5 Letters Patent, is

1. In a temporary binder, the cover D D, provided with metal plates F F, having shoulders or offsets b b, a series of stationary hooks,
