QGUNILOCK SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,383, dated June 29, 1880.
Application filed January 22, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1-. WILLIAM NEWTON. ORABTREE, of Porterville, in the'county of Tulare and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Gun- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct hair-trigger gun-locks with devices that will [0 prevent accidental discharge of the gun with-' out requiring additional manipulation or inte'rferin g with the rapid handling; of the piece; and the invention consists in a blocking-piece interposed between the hammer and breech, to prevent contactof the hammer with the cap- -tube, and a thumb-lever fitted -u pen the ham mer to hold the blocking-piece out of action when the hammer is set for firing, the said devices working automatically by the usual ma- 2o nipulations of the hammer, as more particularly set forth hereinafter with reference to the aceompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation of the lock mechanism with 'the'hammer in a cooked position. 2 5, Fig. 2 shows the hammer as set in the safety position. the side of hammer A, and extending in contact with the stirrup B, to prevent the same from rising, cxceptas hereinafter described. g is a pin fixed on the side plate of the lock, with which pin one side of stirrup 13 moves in contact as the hammer is moved, so that the blocking-piece is thrown downward as the hammer is cooked and left free to rise as the hammer falls.
The ha r-trigger devices consist of an arm,
h, hung horizontally above the trigger t, and formed at its pivoted end with a shoulder, 1. Apiece, k, ishungon the tail-piece b of the hammer, so as to move horizontally forward and back as the hammer moves, and fitted with a projection, 2, that rides over and engages with the shoulder of the arm h when the hammer is cooked. A spring, 1, tends to press the piece is downward, and m is the tri ggerspring. A backward movement of trigger i frees the moving end of arm h, and the pressure of pieces k on the shoulder i throws up the arm h, thereby freeing the shoulder 1 from the projection 2 and allowing the hammer to spring forward. This construction permits a very icate-action. As the hammer' Ais drawn back to cook the gun the blocking-piece G is forced down by contact of the pin g with the stirrup B, and the end of the thumblever'Din contact with B retains the block 0 down when the hammeris thrown forward to fire the gun.
The stirrup O is formed with a notch 'or re- 'cess, 3, and when the thumb-lever D is moved so that its end is over the notch 3 the piece 0 is permitted to rise by the action of spring 0.
The thumb-lever D is formed wider than the hammer, so that the ordinary pressure of cocking the gun will move the other end of D over notch 3, and a spring, a, returnsthe lever D when the pressure on the hammer is released.
Thus it will be seen that in firing the piece the hammer is cooked as usual, and when the triggeris pulled the piece 0 is, kept out of the way, while if it is desired to set the hammer for safety, it is simply let down as usual by holding it, and pressure of the operators thumb on lever D allows-the blocking-piece to come up between the hammer and breech arid prevent contact of the hammer with the cap-tube, as shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1.
