WATER-GAGE FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,037, dated February 22, 1859:
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MILLER, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Alarm Tater-Gages for Steam-Boilersg and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a front view of an alarm water gage constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same, in the plane indicated by the line ac, Fig. l. Fig. et is a back view of the same taken inside of the boiler.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in a novel and very effective method of producing the operation of the alarm valve of an alarm water gage, which also provides for the combination with the said valve of an index to show at all times the height of water in the boiler to which the gage is applied.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, is a hollow socket or tube intended to be passed through the front plate B, of a boiler, from the inside, and to be secured thereto by a shoulder a, on the inside, and a screw thread b, and nut c, on the outside, as represented in Fig. 2. In this tube or socket, inside the boiler, is formed the seat e, for the conical or puppet-like valve (Z, which is arranged to open by an inward movement, and the stem D, of which passes right thrmigh the said tube or socket, and is fitted so as erbe capable of both turning and moving longiudinally therein. To the inner end of the s`z\'d stem D, is secured an arm C, to which is attached a rod E, having a float F, at its end, and to the outer extremity of said stem is attached an index f.
Gr, is a steam whistle screwed on to the outer end of the socket or tube A.
H, is a dial plate secured to the front of the steam whistle and having a hole provided in its center for the valve stem,- which also constitutes the index spindle,- to work through. The index f, is attached outside or in front of the dial.
The valve seat e, is surrounded by a .I broad face of metal on which is a beveled projection g, shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and behind this face the valve stem D, has on one side a cam or wiper L, which is so arranged relatively to the float and the stationary projection g, that so long as the water in the boiler is above the lowest safe level, the float resting on the surface of the water will keep the said cam or wiper above and out of contact with the said stationary projection and allow the valve to remain closed by the pressure of the steam in the boiler upon its interior, but that when the water gets below such level the float descending by gravitation, will, by turning the valve stem, bring the said cam or wiper in contact with the inclined surface of the said projection and so cause the valve stem to be moved inward and the valve (Z, to be opened to admit steam to the whistle and give the alarm.
This gage requires no stuffing box or packing, as the valve prevents any escape of steam through the socket or tube A, while the water is at a proper level, and all that is required for the proper operation of the valve is proper bearings for the stem D, near its extremities. The bearing for the inner end of the stem is in a bridle c', secured to or cast on the inner end of the socket or tube A, and there is a bearing provided for it near its outer end, at j, in the lower part of the whistle. There is a narrow passage 7s, cut in the bridle z', on one side of the bea-ring for the valve stem, to permit the cam or wiper L, to pass through as the valve stem is inserted in its place from the inside of the socket or tube A.
I do not claim, broadly, attaching an index to the stem of the alarm valve of an alarm water gage. But
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Operating the valve cl, of an alarm gage to produce the alarm, when necessary, by means of a cam or wiper le., on the valve stem D, and a stationary inclined projection g, on the socket or tube A, or its equivalent, the several parts being arranged and applied, in combination with a float attached to the stem, substantially as herein set forth.
