Description

(NoModeL) O. B. 81; J. M. HAYS.
Celluloid Belts for Wearing Apparel.
No. 233,414. Patented Oct. 19,1880.
)LPETERS, PHOTU-LITROGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICEQ CHARLES B. HAYS AND JAMES M. HAYS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
CELLULOID BELT FOR WEARING-APPAREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,414, dated October 19, 1880,
Application filed May 5, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES E. HAYS and JAMES M. HAYS, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Celluloid Belts for Wearing-Apparel, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to belts for wearingapparel; and it consists in covering the base, of whatever material made, with celluloid, lignoid, or other pyroxyline material, making a new article of manufacture.
, Figure l is a plan, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section, of a belt.
()ur belts are made from any suitable material, such as metal or textile or fibrous fabrics, and these belts are covered with celluloid or other like soluble material, either with a stuffing-machine or with dies, the method of covering not being a part of the invention.
Fig. 2 shows the belt or interlining A and the celluloid B, forming the outer coating. A strip of celluloid is laid on the back of the base, and astripis then laid on the face, leaving the edges to turn over on the back and be cemented down.
In making belts of celluloid we produce a new article of manufacture and add another (No model.)
to the valuable industries which have sprung up since the production of this pyroxyliue; and in our manufacture of belts of this mate rial we are enabled to produce them in a great variety of colors and patterns-plain, embossed, or open lace-work-corresponding to taste and the color and style of apparel to be worn, meeting a long-felt demand for an article having an adaptation to these variable needs, and that will not be easily soiled in wear, as the light-colored belts usually are, and that may be cleaned and made bright as new by the application of a little water. This, in the embossed and open work, is of great importance. Therefore,
What we claim as ourinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the belt having the outer surface of celluloid or similar soluble material, incasing a suitable base or interliuing, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
