METALLIC PENHOLDER.
Speccaton of Letters Patent N o. 23,366, dated March 29, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT GRANGER, of the cit-y and county and Stateof New York, have invented a Metallic Penholder; and I do declare that the following is a full and exact description of the saine.
The nature or' my invention consists in so piercing, cracking and indenting a metallic` tube as to receive and securely hold a pen on the outside thereof in a proper writing position.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The metallic tube or holder is formed in the usual way of raising and rounding a flat piece of metal into tubular form. Previous to rounding the metal, which is first cut into shape corresponding with the outlines of the accompanying drawing, A, and called a bl.ank,7 I pierce it in form shown at letters C, C, which piercing forms the bar, B. I then crack the blank at D, D. The eifect of the pierces, C, C, and the cracks, D D, is to create two clasps, E E, on each side of the bar, B. The crooks in the pierces near the end of the blank form or leave a bar or bars, F F. These bars I crush, or indent, after the tube is formed, at a point, I, I, in direct line with the pierces, C O. The indentations thus made is to permit the edges of a pen to sink below the metal constituting the clasps, E E, in order that when itis put into the holder the end of the pen will not strike against the corners` of the clasps, but on the contraryT will freely slide underneath. These described pierces and cracks being done I' round the blank into a tube, when I indent it at the points, I I, which being done the tube is perfected for receiving a pen and holding it in such a manner that the entire oval side or top of the pen is exposed to View excepting only the narrow hold the clasps, E E, take on the sides when the pen is pushed up to the cracks, D D, as shown in the accompanying model.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The holding of a pen on the outside of a metallic tube (commonly called a penholder) in such a manner, by reason of pierces, cracks and indentations, as to leave the entire length of a pen, when inserted in proper writing position, uncovered.
