INVENTOR.
Patented Aug. 22, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a signalling device designed primarily for use by motorists to indicate to drivers of approaching vehicles, the intention of the operator of a vehicle, to stop.
An important object of the invention is to provide a Signal adapted to be worn on the left hand of the motor vehicle operator or pedestrian, means being provided for illuminating the signal in such a manner as to eliminate glare which would have a tendency to blind and confuse a person viewing the signal, and which no doubt would render the signal ineffective.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein described, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, illustrating the signal as attached to the back of the hand of the user.
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevational view of the device.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the device.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the signal proper, which comprises a disk-like support, on which the reflector 6 is mounted. This reflector 6, is constructed of material which, when light rays are projected thereon, will reflect red light rays, indicating danger.
Secured to the disk-like support 5, is a main supporting strap I, which is of a length to encircle the hand of a person wearing the signal. A hook indicated at 8 is secured to one end of the strap I, and is adapted to engage the loop 9 secured to the support 5, thereby holding the signal on the hand of the user. A strap I0 connects with the support 5, at a point in spaced relation with the point of connection between the strap 1 and the support 5, the strap I0 being curved and extended to a point adjacent to the hook 8, where it is secured to the strap I, by lines of stitching II. The space between the straps 1 and I0, accommodates the thumb of the hand of the person wearing the signal, so that the signal will be held in proper position at all times.
The reference character l2 designates straps which are secured to the support 5, adjacent to the straps I and ID, the straps I2 being in loop form so that a battery such as indicated at I3, may be readily supported on the device. A substantially tubular member I4 is also held in position under the straps I2, and this member :4 provides a support for the lamp socket I5, in which the lamp I6 is positioned. Directly over the lamp I6, is a curved reflector II, which not only directs the light rays from the lamp l6, onto the reflector 6, but at the same time provides means for shielding the light rays from the lamp I6, eliminating the glare in the eyes of the person viewing the signal.
Connected with the lamp-socket, at one side thereof, is a wire I8 which extends over the strap I, where it is secured, by means of the strap I9. A wire indicated at 20 connects with one end of the battery, and is also secured in position by means of the strap I9. The wires I8 and 20 are of a semi-rigid material, with sufficient resiliency to normally urge the wires I8 and 20 away from each other. A block of insulating material indicated at 2I, is disposed between the wires I8 and 20, holding the wires spaced apart, under normal conditions.
At the ends of the wires I8 and 20 are contact members 22 which are so located that they may be readily pressed by the thumb of the hand on which the signal is supported. It will be obvious that when the thumb forces the contact members 22 together, a circuit will be completed to the lamp [6, directing light rays onto the signal 5 illuminating the signal, so that it will be readily visible by persons moving within sight of the signal.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when aperson wearing the signal, wishes to indicate to persons moving in proximity thereto, the intention of the person to stop, it is only necessary for the person wearing the signal to extend his arm, and press the contact members together by the thumb, as described. The light rays from the lamp IE will clearly illuminate the signal, and the reflector I1 will shade the lamp and eliminate glare in the eyes of the person viewing the signal.
What is claimed is:
An illuminated hand signalling device, comprising a disk-like body, a reflector of circular formation secured to the outer surface of the body, said body adapted to be secured to the back of the hand, a tubular member secured tothe body and extending transversely across one edge of the body, a pair of spaced loop members disposed adjacent to the ends of the tubular memher and in which an electric battery is removably held, a lamp socket extending laterally from the tubular member and being disposed directly over the reflector, a lamp positioned within the socket member, a curved reflector extending over the socket member and adapted to extend an appreciable distance beyond the lamp positioned in 5 in position under the thumb of the user.
