ISAIAH B. ROBBINS, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
OFFICE-DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,179, dated January 4, 1881. Application filed May 24, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ISAIAH B. ROBBINS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Office-Desks; and I do hereby declare thefollowin g to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of the desk, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section thereof.
My invention relates to that class of desks used by book-keepers, lawyers, and businessmen generally. The object of the invention is to make such desks of a more convenient and compact style than heretofore and at reduced cost.
The invention consists in combining a circular revolving center for writing and other purposes with the body of the desk, which contains receptacles for papers and has above it a book-case, all as hereinafter particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the revolving centerof the desk. It is made, preferably, circular in form, and is divided horizontally and partitioned off into separate. compartments for the reception of papers and the like. It is supported by a shaft, D, which rests in a step formed, as shown in Fig. 2, in the standard E, and is free to revolve. The top may be provided, as illustrated, with a cup, F, for the reception of pens, rubber, or other items useful about a Writing-desk. This revolving center is inclosed partially, sides and top, by the stationary portion or body B of the desk. The sides of the body B are square and the top a fiat surface, and it is cut away centrally into any approved form.
By inclosing a portion of the sides and top of the revolving center, as described, the center is heldsecurely in place and the contents of a number of the compartments are completely hidden from View and also secluded from dust.
Beneath the top surface of the body B, and so as to be over the center 'A, the same as the body, there is locateda shelf, G, and the compartment formed by this shelf and the top of the body is divided by partitions H into a number of cells for the reception of files and papers generally, each one opening toward the revolving center. On top of this body B, at the rear thereof, there is placed a book-case, O, which may have pigeon-holes I as a part thereof.
In using the desk the occupant may turn the center A so as to bring any compartment next to him and any object on the revolving center to the front of the desk. At the same time he is within easy reaching distance of any of the cells in the body of the desk, and also of the book-case.
The desk, besides embracing many useful elements about a business-desk, also makes an ornamental piece of furniture.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The revolving center A, divided into compartments, in combination with the stationary portion or body B, the latter covering a portion of the revolving center A, as shown and described, for the purpose set forth 2. The revolving center A, in combination with the stationary portion or body B, the latter divided into cells or compartments opening toward the revolving center, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' 3. The revolving center A, divided into compartments, in combination with a stationary body, B, divided into compartments and covering a portion of the top and sides of the revolving center, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAIAH B. ROBBINS.
