between the shoulder l3 and the shank receiving end of the handle I insures that the angular faces 3a and to will always be engaged sufficiently to insure that the shank issolidlyheid"against turn ing with respect to'thehandlen I As best shown in Fig. 2, the open end of the bore 1 is closed by a plug l4, which may be drive-fitteda thread-tap 44. Adjustment of the shank 42 or threaded into the handle. The plug provides a spring-pressed friction ball I5, whichext'nds beyond the plug suflicientlyhsonthat a (portion thereof lies within the edges of aline'd transverse openings l6 extending through the wall of the receive the cross bar I! shown in dotted lines, with the. pressure of the ball l5 holding the-tern irictionallyin position., Ifhusthetool may be dfi the w mdi ias 1 t e t ol-1 a i i s was: n t ere hown a modification in" the ,meanjs, for holding the shank These Openings! @areadanted; 9.
s ide v l va i lene h, h n e driver 5 ,is turned on it's pivot pin. 6 so as to be a e y'adinet d'pbsitioni n this. arrangeinent,
the end of the handle portion l'iz provides an enlargement ,IBo'f tapered form, providingscrew threads IQ for receiving an mterneu threaded sleeve 20. one end of the sleeve ifl is tapered t 'eeriespend togthe'tap'ered' end surface o f the pOrt'i' nIjIBQ which'is slotted as indicated "at 21 in Fig. 7,'sothat'screwing on ofjthe sleeve 20 will tend to contract the portion which surrounds the rrietienjj ing lid, to such an extent as ti; very tightl'y compress the ring lla' upo n theshank, thereby holding the shankfirinly in any'adinste position. Otherwise the construction of thetool isthe sarne as described abbvewith refer nee'to i f m n r reviously pointed but,theinventi fl ggy alsol 'be applied in connection withl otherftyp i oi tools having the same generalpurpose as .the tool of Fig. 1, namely to move some relatively inaccessiblepart either bytiir i the tool itself,
or using the tool as a lever. I n Fig.8 the invention is shown as incorporated inan extension bar, wherein the end of the handle?! provides an angular socket 23 adapted, for example, to'receive the driver 5 at'the end of theftool of Fig 1 The handle" 22' isfalso flattened at 24 to receiveia wrench, if desired. The shank 25 terminates in a head 26 providing adriver 21 iormedintegrally with the shankfanda tapered sleeve 28fis adapted to lock the'shank 25 scribed abovewith reference to Fig. (3. In 9theinvention is shown as being applied toa Wrench of the brace t pe, wherein the handle 29pr'ovides a crankiportion 30, to the end of which is attached a tubular portion tensible shank 31 providing at its end an offset driver 38 adapted to be received in a Wrench socket of usual form. v
'1 In} Fig. 712 .;the handle portion :39 provides a transverseopening 40 fOr' receivinga bar 4| for using the tool as a T-handle, with a shank 42 provided at its end with a chuck 43 for receiving within the handle 39 permits the tap 44 to be used for. thethreading of holes in difierent loca- -tions;1
From -the"foregoing, it is apparent that by the present invention there is provided an extensible tooladaptedfor a wide variety of uses, with the toolbeing rotatable about its own axis to turn work at different, distances from the user, or being adapted to ,turn the work the applicationof diiierent leverages. A, nf 'e'chanic equipped with such jaf't'ool' is able to perform a large variety of operations that. heretofore would have required's iev eral handles, r. separate Wrenches.
I"claim,' I l 1'. extensible hand't'ool comprising in combination a hollow handlprov'iding 'a split portion' at' en end, a shank longitudinally movable within the'handle and providing'a work engaging"portionfat'oneiend beyond said handle, a contractile, member within the, split portion of said handle for exerting a Trictionalrestraining force on said shank and means for contracting the :splitpo'rtion of saidhandle ou the shank to also contract sai'd'menibe'r and"positively look I the shank against'turning within'the handle and tionally holding said shank in-diiierent extended positions with relation 'ft'o fsaid' handle, and an abutment p'ositionable'on the inner end of said shank,'after its'insertiohiiii said handle, to prevent complete wthdraw'al' of the shank from the handle uponengaging s'ai'd shoulder inside the in difierent positions as dc;
