This invention relates to shoe soles.

One object of the present invention is to provide a rubber or rubber-composition sole which is hollow or is provided with recesses in which filling means or members are received for producing, a shoe sole of the platform type or of the wedge heel type.

Another object of the invention is to provide a hollow shoe sole having a peripheral wall defining a recess and an inwardly directed marginal flange or lip at the top of said peripheral wall in. integral relation therewith and constituting means to provide for the proper secur'ement of the upper to the sole.

The above and other objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description considered with reference to the accompanying drawings.

The sole S embodying the invention is illustrated in Fig. 1 and in other figures of the drawings as will clearly appear as the description proceeds.

The outer surfaces of the bottom and peripheral edge of the sole S are provided with ribs, as illustrated in Figs. 1, and 2 to 7. Sole Sis provided with a side wall 50 and with a bottom wall 54.

The sole is provided with inwardly projecting and inwardly tapering side flanges or lips 72 at the top of side walls 50 of the sole S, except at the front i l and rear end portions 75, respectively, of said side wall which are thicker than the longitudinally extending portions of the side wall. The sole is provided with fillets 73 (Fig. 1A) at the juncture between each flange l2 and the back of the sole. These fillets strengthen the tions '54 and it of the side walls and the corresponding end portions Ma and 16a of the bottom of the sole are devoid of recesses or ribs. Moreover, it will be understood that the grooves can be omitted from the bottom and side walls of the recess Where the rib formation on the outsole is not desired. This is illustrated in Fig. 9. The hollow shoe sole Sa which is illustrated in Fig. 9, is devoid of ribs or grooves in the peripheral side wall 50a and similarly devoid of ribs or grooves in the bottom 52a thereof. The top lips or flanges for the sole illustrated in Fig. 9 are indicated at 12.

The soles produced in accordance with the present invention are utilized for making shoes of the platform or wedge heel type, one of such shoes being illustrated in Figs. 4 to 7. As here shown said shoe comprises an upper 88 of any suitable construction and of any suitable material, the lasting allowance 90 of said upper being secured in any suitable way, preferably adhesively to the lips 12 and to the upper surfaces of the thickened end portions 14 and 16 of the sole. As the sole produced in accordance with the present invention is hollow, filler members 92 and 94 are positioned in the recess in said sole. Filler member 92 extends from the back of said recess substantially to the ball line and is wedge shaped longitudinally so that it conforms in depth to the. recess of. the sole of the heel and shank parts thereof. Said heel and shank filler member 92 comprises a wooden block 96 completely encased within and covered by an envelope 98 'of sponge rubber. Member 92 is produced by molding sponge rubber around a block 96 of wood or other suitable material in a mold. Said sponge rubber envelope or casing 98 is provided with a forwardly and laterally extending part I00 which tapers in thicknesstoward the free edge thereof, and overliesv the filler member 94 whereby to eliminate the transverse line of separation'which would otherwise be formed atthe top of the shoe sole. Filler member Fi i-extends substantially to the ball line of the shoe sole and is preferably pre-formed and can be formed of any suitable material, preferably of a fibrous or felted character. As illustrated the shoe is provided with an insole Hi2 which is adhesivelysecured'to the upper surface of the lasting allowance of the upper and to the upper surfaces: of the filler members 92 and 94, and also as here shown a sock lining I04- is attached to the upper surface of said insole. it will be understood that there may be various other possible embodiments thereof, and that various changes in the details of construction and p in the arrangement of parts may be made in the embodiment disclosed herein. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the specific construction herein shown or described except tothe extent which may be required by the scope of the appended claims. a

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A shoe sole comprising a bottom wall, a peripheral side wall integral with said bottom wall and upstanding therefrom completely therearound, said peripheral side wall being deeper at its rear part than at its forward part, and inwardly extending lips integral with said side wall at the upper edge thereof and extending longitudinally of the sole at opposite sides of the sole, the front and rear transversely extending end portions of said peripheral Wall being thicker than the side portions of said wall, the opposite ends of said lips terminating at the inner surfaces of said end portions, respectively, of said peripheral wall, and the upper surfaces of said end portions of said peripheral wall being flush with-the upper surfaces of said lips.

2. A shoe sole comprising a bottom wall, a

peripheral side wall integral with said bottom wall and upstanding therefrom completely therearound, said peripheral side wall being deeper at its rear part than at its forward part, and inwardly extending lips integral with said side wall at theupper edge thereof and extending longitudinally of the sole at opposite sides of the sole, the front and rear transversely extending end portions of said peripheral wall being thicker than the side portions of said wall, the opposite ends of said lip terminating at the inner sur-' faces of said end portions, respectively, of said peripheral wall, and the upper surfaces of said end portions of said peripheral wall being flush with the upper surfaces of said lips said lips tapering and decreasing in thickness toward the inner free edges thereof, respectively. 3. A wedge shaped shoe sole comprising a hollow member comprising a bottom and an up-- standing peripheral wall integral with said bottom, said bottom extending for the full length and width of the sole, said upstanding wall extending completely around the sole and defining with said bottom an open top recess, said peripheral wall having heel, shank and forward portions and tapering in height from the rear of said heel portion to said forward portion, whereby said recess is adapted to receive a wedgeshaped filler, and inwardly extending lips integral with said peripheral wall at the upper edge thereof and extending longitudinally of the sole at the opposite sides, respectively, thereof, the inner surfaces of said lips at the heel and shank portions of the sole sloping downwardly toward the front of the sole in position to engage the marginal edge portions of the top of the filler when the latter is positioned in said recess, the front and rear transversely extending end portions of said peripheral wall being thicker than the side portions of said wall, the opposite ends of said lips terminating at the inner surfaces of said end portions, respectively, of said peripheral Wall, and the upper surfaces of said end portions of said peripheral wall being flush with the upper surfaces of said lips.

4. A hollow sole made of compressible resilient material, and comprising a one-piece member having a bottom wall and side and end walls, said end walls being thicker than the side and bottom walls, and said member having inwardly extending lips at the upper ends of the side Walls, said lips merging with said end walls.

5. A sole made of compressible resilient material, and comprising a one-piece hollow member made of resilient material and comprising a bottom wall and an upstanding wall extending all around the bottom wall, lips extending inwardly from the side portions of said upstanding wall, said lips having downwardly and inwardly extending upper surfaces, and said lips decreasing in thickness toward the inner edge thereof, the end portions of said upstanding wall being thicker than the sides of said upstanding wall, and said lips merging with the end portions of said upstanding wall.

6. A wedge shaped shoe sole comprising a hollow member, said member having a bottom wall and an upstanding peripheral wall integral with said bottom wall, said bottom wall extending for the full length and width of the sole, said upstanding wall extending completely around the sole and defining with said bottom wall an open top recess, said peripheral wall having heel, shank and forward portions, and tapering in height from the rear of said heel portion to said forward portion whereby said recess is adapted to receive a Wedge shaped filler, and inwardly extending lips integral with said peripheral wall at the upper edge thereof and extending longitudinally of the sole at the opposite sides respectively thereof, the front and rear transversely extending end portions of said peripheral wall being thicker than the side portions of said wall, the opposite ends of said lips terminating at the inner surfaces of said end portions, respectively, of said peripheral wall, and the upper surfaces of said end portions of said peripheral wall being flush with the upper surfaces of said lips.

7. A wedge shaped shoe sole comprising a hollow member, said member comprising a bottom wall and an upstanding peripheral wall integral with said bottom wall, said bottom wall extending for the full length and width of the sole, said upstanding wall extending completely around the sole and defining with said bottom wall an open top recess, said peripheral wall having heel, shank and forward portions, and tapering in height from the rear of said heel portion to said forward portion whereby said recess is adapted to receive a wedge shaped filler, and inwardly extending lips integral with said peripheral wall at the upper edge thereof and extending longitudinally of the sole at opposite sides, respectively, thereof, the inner surfaces of said lips at the heel and shank portions of the sole sloping downwardly toward the front of the sole in position to engage the marginal edge portions of the top of the filler when the latter is positioned in said recess, the opposite ends of said lips terminating at the inner surface of the front and rear transversely extending end portions of the peripheral wall, and theupper surfaces of said end portions of said peripheral wall being flush with the upper surfaces of said lips.
