Description

March 11, 1.947. E. HUNT LAMP PROTECTOR Filed March 14, 1945 Inventor ..Z@ sifiw fiam if Patented Mar. 11, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LAMP PROTECTOR Leslie E. Hunt, Bay City, Mich.
Application March 14, 1945, Serial No. 582,682
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in guards or protectors for electric lamps or bulbs and the invention has for its primary object to provide a casing for the lamp formed of a plurality of resilient fingers connected to each other and shaped to correspond to the lamp and adapted to receive the latter to prevent objects from coming into direct contact with the lamp,
A further important object of the invention is to provide yieldable means for spacing the lamp from the inner walls of the protector as Well as to provide yieldable means for frictionally gripping the lamp to retain the protector in position thereon.
An additional object is to provide a protector of this character adapted for constructing of transparent material, such as plastic or the like and in which the resilient fingers forming the protector are of open grill construction in order not to obstruct the light from the'lamp.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the protector in position on a lamp.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on a line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of a modified form of the invention.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on a line 55 of Figure 4.
Referring now to the drawings in detail and first with respect to the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 3,'inclusive, the numeral 5 designates the protector generally which is composed of a plurality of flat strips of material 6 connected to each other at one end, these strips being shaped to cooperate in forming a casing of substantial bulbous form and with their other ends free and adapted for extending alon the side of the neck 1 of an electric lamp 8 positioned within the protector.
The intermediate portion of the strips 6 are or open diamond-shape or other. suitable design 5 as shown at 9 and the upper ends of the strips are formed with downwardly extending diverging tongues I ll positioned on the inner surfaces of the strips and adapted for fiatwise engagement with the neck 1 of the lamp.
Inwardly projecting tongues H are also struck from the lower edge of the diamond-shaped intermediate portion 9 of the strip, the tongues ll projecting inwardly for engagement with the lower portion of the lamp 8 to thus space the lamp from the interior of the protector.
The strips 6 are preferably formed of transparent plastic material having sufiicient resiliency to permit outward spreading of the free ends of the strips for the insertion of the lamp within the protector and removal thereof from the protector, the strips thus constituting spring fingers and the tongues l0 and l I yieldably gripping the sides and bottom of the lamp.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 the protector I2 is formed with an imperforate bulbous base I 3 of transparent material and the resilient fingers l4 extend upwardly in spaced apart relation from the imperforate base, the fingers being formed at their upper ends with the downwardly and inwardly extending tongues I5 engaging the neck I5 of the lamp i1.
Tongues l8 are also struck inwardly at the base of the spring fingers l4 and yieldably engage the bottom portions of the lamp. I
It is believed that the details of construction and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
