2 Claims. 1
My invention relates to improvements in casting rods, and particularly to rod tip and reel seat locking means incorporated therein whereby the securing of the rod tip to the rod effects positive locking of the reel seat on the rod, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simple, rugged, and practical arrangement of the character indicated which is easily and quickly operable without lost motion. Other important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the appended drawings, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a general longitudinal sectional and elevational view of an arrangement in accordance with the present invention showing the reel and reel seat in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the butt end of the rod tip.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through the barrel.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through the floating nut.
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through Figure 1 along the line 5-5.
Figure 6 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through Figure 1 along the line 66.
Figure 7 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through Figure 1 along the line 1-1 and looking toward the left in the direction of the arrows.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 generally designates the usual handle which may be supported by and fastened to a shank arranged axially therein and having at its forward end a vertically elongated block I which depends below the handle -5 and has at its lower extremity a depending forwardly projecting and curved finger grip 8. The block I and the finger grip 8 are formed integrally on the longitudinally elongated bar 9 whose flat top Ill forms the supporting surface for the seat II of the reel which is generally designated l2. The rear end of the reel seat II is arranged to seat in a transverse horizontal notch or slot l3 formed in the block 1 between laterally spaced triangular walls l4, whereby right hand longitudinal move- F ment and any lateral relative to the bar 9 prevented.
movement of the reel seat and block I are positively The forward part of the bar 9 projects up-- wardly at an angle as indicated by the numeral I 5, this part terminating in the forwardly projecting tubular portion l6 which is substantially axially aligned with the handle 5. A triangular depression I! is formed in the upper part of the inclined portion I5 and in the lower part of this barrel 23 which is plug-fitted in the bore of the portion IS. The rear end of the barrel 23 is beveled as indicated by the numeral 24, with the lower wall projecting rearwardly beyond the near wall of the recess l1, so that the sides of the slot 22 are arranged on opposite sides of the lever I 3 in confining relation thereto.
Slidably mounted in the bore 25 of the barrel 23 is the plain portion 26 of the rod tip which is generally designated 21, the forward end of the portion 26 having a suitable thread 28 formed thereon. A lug 29 depending from the portion 26 of the tip 21 works longitudinally in the slot 30 formed in the lower wall of the forward end of the barrel 23 whereby the tip is prevented from rotating relative to the said barrel, while being allowed longitudinal relative movement.
Rotatably mounted on the exterior of the barrel 23 is the floating nut 3|, both the nut and the barrel being grooved as indicated by the numerals 32 and 33, respectively, to accommodate a locking ring 34 located in the groove to permit relative rotation of the nut and barrel while preventing longitudinal movement of the nut along the barrel. As indicated in Figure 1 of the drawings, the rear end of the nut 3| is in substantial abutting relation to the forward end of the portion l6 of the rod. The nut 3| is forwardly tapered and provided internally at its forward tip with internal threads 34 to accommodate the threads '28 on the rod tip 21.
With a reel |2 having its seat I in position on the platform I0 and engaged between the walls l4 and in the slot l3, a rod tip 21 is entered through the nut 3| and passed into the barrel 23 until the threads 28 engage the threads in the nut, whereupon the nut 3| may be rotated in a direction to feed the tip forcibly in a rearward direction so as to apply the rear end of the portion 26 of the rod tip to the nose 2| of the lever I9 and thereby force the finger 20 down onto the forward part of the reel seat and thereby lock the reel in place and at the same time effect full connection and assembly of the rod tip with the rod. Reversing of the described actions releases the reel (2 and enables detachment of the rod tip 21'.
Although I have shown and described herein the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood thatlido not wish to limit the application of my invention thereto except as may be required by the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described the invention, what is claiiiid as new is: r
l. A casting rod comprising a handle; a? reel seat on the forward part of said nanniasaidireer seat including a recess to non-shiitably receive the rear end of the base reel seat, a tubular rod tip holder on the torwere endof" said reel seat i'ri whi'clf the butt end of-"t'lie rod tip is siidably" positioned; lever-'- pivotedon said reef seat and having ai-lock'i'n'g' projection overlying the forward part of said re'el fiasean ra n'os ioren'gagement by the rear eigtr rmty-of'tnebutt enfdoi t re r'od t-i'p; snapperating meansfor gripping" said rod tip a'nd forcih'gf tiig same earwardi te-oper te said; lever to l'dck the re'el base o'n-the seatwhile holding the rod tip'in' place.
2. A casting rod comprising a: handle, a reel of a reel resting ori'said lock the reel base on seat On the forward part of said handle, said reel seat including a recess to non-shiftably receive the rear end of the base of a reel resting on said reel seat, a tubular rod tip holder on the forward end of said reel seat in which the butt end of the rod tip is slidably positioned, a lever pivoted on said reel seat and having a locking projection overlying the forward part of said reel base and a nose for engagement by the rear extr'ernity" of the butt end of the rod tip, and operating means for gripping said rod tip and forcing th'e same rearwardly to operate said lever to the seat while holding the fed tip in place, said operating means comprising a tubular nut rotatably mounted on said tubular holder for rotary motion only and axially alignedwith said-tubular holder to pass the rod tip, said nut having internal threads engaging external threads formed on said rod tip, and means preventing rotation of said rod tip relative to said holder;
