Application September 12, 1 945,.:SerialaNo.;;615flli9 The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in flashlights, and more particularly to'an extension carried by the flashlight and by means of which a light may be projected directly upon inaccessible parts of machinery or into restricted places.
An important object of the invention is to provide a flexible lamp cable embodying means for connecting the inner end thereof to the batteries of a conventional form of flashlight and under the control of a switch carried by the flashlight for energizing the extension lamp either simultaneously with the lamp of the flashlight or independently thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide an extension lamp for flashlights constructed as a unitary part of the flashlight.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a side elevational view with parts broken away and shown in section,
Figure 2 is a view in elevation of the extension cord removed from the flashlight,
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the contact between the batteries of the flashlight and the main flashlight lamp and forming the connection for the extension lamp, and
Figure 4 is a rear elevational view of the flashlight.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, I have-disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the tubular flashlight casing having the batteries 6 mounted therein in the usual manner, the front end of the casing having the reflector I mounted therein and in which the main flashlight lamp 8 is supported. The base of the lamp 8 is electrically connected with the contact 9 at the front end of the battery by means of a contact I9 projecting through opposite sides of an insulation disk I I secured in the front end of the casing.
A housing I2 is formed at one side of the casing 5 at its front end and in which is secured a tubular shell I3 having its rear end closed as 1 Claim. (01. ziflezirt).
9 indicated at I4 and its front end open at the open front endwef the. housing -I2:"and in which a cylindrical plug l5 is removably inserted, the plug having a flexible metal cable I6 extending from the front end thereof.
The outer end of the cable It is formed with a lamp socket I'I within which a flashlight lamp I8 is mounted, the base of the lamp having contact with the outer end of an insulated electric cable I9 extending through the cable I6 and into the plug l5.
The inner end of the cable I9 is connected to a plug 29 having a rounded head 2|, the plug 20 being secured to the rear end of the plug I5 and insulated therefrom by means of the washers 22.
The rounded head 2| of the plug 20 is adapted for detachable engagement with a spring clip 23 secured to the inside of the rear wall I4 of the shell I3. A pin 24 is connected to the clip 23 and extends through the rear end I4 of the shell I3 and is insulated therefrom, and to the rear end of the pin is connected one end of an electric wire 25 extending through an opening 26 in the casing 5 and connected to the rear end of the contact III.
The battery casing 5 is provided with a conventional form of switch 21, which may be of a twoway type for controlling the energization of the main bulb 8 of the flashlight, or the extension bulb I8, so as to selectively energize either the bulb 8 or the bulb [8.
The switch includes a swinging contact 28 connected to the battery casing 5 and having its free end adapted for selectively engaging contacts 29 or 39. The contact 29 has a wire 3| leading to a leaf spring 32 with its free end projecting through an opening 33 in the shell l3 to contact the plug l5. The other contact 30 has a wire 34 leading to the reflector I.
The circuit for the bulb or lamp IB is through the contact Ill, wire 25, pin 24, clip 23, plug 29, to the cable I9 and then to the lamp I8, the lamp being grounded through the socket II, flexible cable It, plug l5, spring 32 and wire 3| to the contact 29 and casing 5.
The flexible cable I9 may be of any desired length and accordingly the lamp I8 of the extension may be placed into inaccessible positions for directly illuminating inaccessible parts of machinery which otherwise could not be effectively illuminated by the main bulb 8 of the flashlight.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device 3 will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention that the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
A flashlight including a case having a battery therein and a lamp electrically connected to the battery, a housing at one side of the case, a shell in the housing, a spring clip in the shell and electrically connected to the battery, an extension lamp, and a plug at one end of the extension lamp slidably received in said shell for frictional engagement therewith, and a contact on the inner end of the plug for detachable connection with the clip.
