Patented Mar. 30, 1948 COMBINED 'STRAND'DI'SPLAY AND TRANSFER REEL Egbert P. Hoyle, Cortland, N. Y., assignor to Cortland Line Company, Inc., Cortland, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application September 18, 1946, Serial No. 697,633
3 Claims. 1 The present invention relates to a compact sectionalized spool means embodying three separable parts disposed as a marketing casing or jacket of the transparent reel type serving to attractively exhibit a coil of high gradefish line or the like strand product whereby 'to conjointly ofier for sale to the sporting goods trade, such commodity as a unit with its display jacket. A rearrangement of component parts also allows my container to be utilized as a strand transfer reel.
One reel section comprises a reversible dished cover or hood adapted in one of its operative positions, to protectively seal a stowed coil against dust, excess moisture or other contamination, and in an alternative position serves as a guide flange of my transfer reel.
Said reel casing may further include a noncircular socketed base section and a cooperating cap section provided with an eccentric plug adapted to be easily'brought into interlocked wedged engagement within the base socket by a rotative manipulative twist in accordance with the teachings of the Allen and Womeldorff Patent No. 2,124,512 issued July 19, 1938.
The object of my invention is to provide for a neatly refined coll reel of the indicated char acter of which all its parts may be economically fabricated and furnished with each sold coil without unduly increasing the factory cost of such combined display unit.
Embodied herein are also certain structural features organized to promote the end in view, and all of which will hereinafter be more explicitly set forth.
Reference is had to theaccompanying one sheet of drawings which are illustrative of a preferred exemplification, and in which drawings:
Fig. 1 represents a top or cover view "of my container assembly having a coiled fish line stowed therein; and Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of such assembly taken along 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of said assembly; and Fig. 4 a fragmental cross-sectional'view taken along t-4 of Fig. 2. Y
The disclosed style of container reel comprises three separable parts respectively designated it, 20 and 30, that may respectively be fabricated from moulded transparent plastic stock. The base section it is preferably kept relatively thin and uniform in stock thickness. This light weight base is shaped to provide for a disc flange H whose perimeter may be reenforced as at l2 and have a circular centering ledge l3 therearound.
The disc centermay be perforated to provide for a spindle receiving aperture M. In circumscrlbing relation to such aperture, is integrally formed a cross-sectionally hollow flange spacer agency or offset annulus I 5 of which the interior wall 16 is given an elliptical socket shape or bore 25 provided with a major and a minor axis of unequal dimensions. The exterior wall ll of said annulus may be kept truly cylindrical and have a ring-like tie wall l8 disposed parallel to the flange ll. Distributed radial webs such as IE3 may be inset to laterally stiffen such base structure as a whole.
A second part of mycontainer comprises the cap section 2t provided with a non-circular flange 2! that is centrally perforated at 22 in registry with the disc aperture M. The perimeter of the manipulative flange 2! may be given a round cornered substantially square contour of which the flats are preferably kept materially smaller than the diametral dimension of the flange ll. A circular fish line identifying label may be affixed to the exposed side face of the cap flange it) within the marginal confines thereof and pro 5 vided with a centralized hole that clears the perforation 2-2 to admit a suitable reel spindle therethrough without label mutilation.
Afiixed to the oppositesid'e of the cap flange 28 is an upstanding tubular plug 23 of which the endless wall contour is given an elliptical profile shaped to enter into the socket bore 25 and initially leave a restricted clearance gap is therebetween. A partial rotation on part of the flange 2i serves to frictionally interlock the plug 23 into said bore. A reversed turning of said plug permits vof its unobstructed withdrawal.
A demountabl'e third part of my container "comprises a cross-sectionally dished hood or cup shaped "cover section 3i! of thin plastic including a dual faced, ring-shaped basal wall 3! of which its centralized hole is sized to freely telescope about the plug 23 as shown in Fig. 2. In one I of alternative positions, the skirted hood brim 3*2 is made to snugly engage the ledge l3 of the base section to form a seal therewith when used a protective container. The inner region of the reversible wall 3 is interposed to clamp between a tie w-all face of the annulus l5 and the marginal region of the cap flange it. For stowage needs, the coiled fish line .33 may be mounted over the exterior wall ll of the base annulus and within the confines of the hood brim 32.
By releasing the plug interlock, said brim may be reversely disposed into its dotted Fig. 2 posi- 55 tion 32', it being pointed out that the same plug with a pair of radially raised stop projections o'ri lugs such as 26 which may be symmetrically formed by the use of a centralized radius RI and an eccentrically offset radius R2 as indicated. The exposed face of the cap flange 2! may be inscribed with the reversed directional legends (see Fig. 1) to facilitate a positive one way looking or of unlocking the warped plug'23 with respect to its bore.
The arrowed direction represented in the Fig.
4 assembly, brings about a plug interlock by rotatively separating the stop projection 26 relative'to' the bore abutment 34. Upon close ap proach ina reversed direction, the initiallyidivided gaps 24 are with certainty made to extend continuously around the plug perimeter in endless formation to freely clear the plug for unobstructed withdrawal from its bore or replacement therein. As an important advantage inherent in my bore and plug refinements, the reel parts'are prevented from being improperly reassembled or awkwardly manipulated.
My reel parts are devoid of' clips, springs, screw threads or the like complications that would prove inappropriate for moulding such assembled'parts from plastic. Furthermore, my
- container is rendered pleasing in appearance and otherwise affords a neat jacket trim in which to display and promote the sale of coiled strand goods. It may further be emphasized that the use of thintransparent plastic parts visualizes the quality, finish and strand size for selection by a prospective buyer without exposure to dust or the like' defilement. 4
The described preferred embodiment will make apparent to those skilled in this art, the advantages afforded by my simple and relatively cheap combined stowage and transfer reel, it being understood that certain structural changes may be resorted to in attaining a like result, all without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as more particularly characterized in the appended claims.
