STRIP BINDER FOR RECORD ALBUMS OR SCRAP BOOKS Filed Sept. 11, 1946 Patented June 29, 1948 STRIP BINDER FOR RECORD ALBUMS OR SCRAPBOOKS Joseph D. Kniznick, Bronx, N. Y. Application September 11, 1946, Serial No. 696,261
Claims.
This invention relates to an improved binding element for record envelopes and clipping or picture album, or other book leaves, and one of its objects is to provide a binding element which may be detachably connected to the intermediate section of a book cover or album cover, and which may provide a series of loops or wings to which individual leaves or whole sections of leaves or envelopes may be attached.
Another object of the invention is to provide an album or book with a leaf carrying element, so arranged that a series of leaves may be quickly attached to the cover of an album or book or removed from it.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain new and useful combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification, and fully illustrated in the drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an album showing the improved binding element mounted in position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the binding element removed.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view thereof, showing two leaves attached to the wings of the binding element.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view thereof.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of a modified form.
Fig. 6 is a similar view of another modified form.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate the practical embodiment of the invention, 5 designates a cover having a left wing 6 and a right wing I, connected to each other by means of the usual flexible or rigid intermediate portion, not shown.
0n the intermediate section of the book or album cover a binding strip 8 of flexible metal or other material is placed. This strip may be formed with terminal tabs 9 and H], which are of malleable stock or material, and which can be bent over to form coupling hooks or loops I l and I2 to unite the metal binding strip 8 to the intermediate portion of the book or album cover.
One side of the binding strip element 8 is formed with a U-shaped wing l3, and the other side is formed with a similar U-shaped wing IA. The bends l3 and M of these wings are disposed in confronting and parallel relation to each other, and are slightly spaced from each other, so that the longitudinal grooves or channels l3 and M" of these wings will face outwardly.
It will be further understood in place of the loops II and H which unite the metal binding strip 8 to the intermediate portion of the book or album cover, equivalent uniting means may be utilized such as eyelets or other desirable securing means.
The marginal edges of the wings l3 and 14 may be formed with binding prongs Hi. The inner marginal edge of a leaf [6 is placed in the channel l3" of the wing l3 and another leaf ['1 is placed in the channel l4" of the wing M. The sides of each wing is then closed upon its leaf so as to grip the inner edge of the leaf, which is thereby permanently coupled to the binding strip until it is desired to uncouple the leaves.
In Fig. 5 I show a variation of the binding strip, wherein the flexible binding strip 20 is formed on one side with a pair of U-shaped wings 2i and 22, which receive the leaves 23 and 24, and on the other side with a pair of U-shaped wings '25 and 26, which receive the leaves 21 and 28. Each leaf being shown to consist of two plies.
In Fig. 6 I show another construction, wherein the binding strip 30 is formed with side U-shaped wings 3| and 33 and with an intermediate U- shaped wing 32. In each wing a leaf 34 is secured by closing the sides of the wing upon the leaf.
The binding strips may be completely detached from the book or album cover, and stored away, and fresh binding strips and leaves attached to the book or album cover. This adds to the utility of the book or album cover.
It is understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction, their combination and arrangement, within the scope of the invention, as defined in the claims hereof.
Having described the invention, I claim as new:
1. A book having a cover provided with an intermediate section and a binding strip having end tabs folded over the ends of the intermediate section and side U-shaped wings constructed to grip the inner ends of separate book leaves.
2. The combination with a book cover having right and left side wings and a connecting intermediate portion, a binding strip having malleable end tabs folded over the ends of the intermediate portion and. integral side U-shaped wings, each wing having integral holding prongs, and a leaf having its inner marginal edge portion gripped to each wing.
3. The construction set forth in claim 2, each wing having a bend portion spaced in parallel relation from the bend portion of the other wing.
4. The construction set forth in claim 2, the strip having an additional U-shaped wing located outwardly and attached to each of the side wings thereof, to receive an additional book leaf.
