The invention described herein, if patented, may be manufactured and used by or for` the Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.

This invention relates to a protective hood adapted to -t over a gas mask.

In an area contaminated with a. vesicant gas, the body of the soldier is protected, at least temporarily, by his uniform, and his face and respiratory organs are protected by a gas mask. However, the back lof the head, including the ears, and the neck are exposed to the vesicant action of the gas which quickly causes him to become a casualty.

It is known to equip gas contamination squads with gas-impervious suits which protect the body from head to foot. Such protective suits are impracticable as standard equipment for soldiers because of their weight and bulk, and because of the discomfort caused by the wearing. Such suits would also be useless in a surprise attack because of the length of time needed for putting them on.

The protection against vesicant gas afforded thesoldier by his clothing (for instance, shirt, trousers, gloves, shoes) is greatly increased by iinpregnating it with gas-,impervious material. To do the same with conventional headgear, such as toques, winter caps, etc., will not produce the desired result, as they do not t over the gas mask and do not provide a gas tight seal at their lower edges.

It is therefore an objectof this invention to provide a protective hood that can be worn over a gas mask.

Another object is a hood which is light and adapted to be folded compactly when not in use, so that it may 'be carried in the gas mask container.

Another object of the invention is a hood for protection against vesicant gases, which can be conveniently tightened around the neck of the wearer so as to provide a gas proof seal.

A further object of the invention is a hood construction permitting its Ilateral expansion, so that it can be slid over a gas mask.

A hood in accordance with the present invention comprises a conventional front panel with a face opening, a conventional back panel, and novel side panels, which permit the hood to expand to a width sufficient to fit over the head of the wearer while he is using his gas mask. The front, back and side portions are of sufcient length to extend below the neck of the wearer; when the h ood is tightened around the neck of the wearer the lowermost portion of the hood flares out so as to lie substantially fiat on the shoulder of the shirt or coat of the wearer. The hood is preferably impregnated with a gas-impervious material.

A preferred embodiment of a protective hood In accordance with my invention is shown in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hood in use in connection with a gas mask;

Figure 2 is a front elevation of a hood in accordance with my invention;

Figure 4 is a rear view corresponding to Fig- '.ure 2;

Figure 5 is a detailed view in perspective, of a portion of the hood, marked 5f-5 in Figure 2, viewed from the inside; and

Figure 6 is a lay-out of the fabric parts which are component parts of the hood.

More particularly, parts Il and II' are, respectively, a left and right front portion or panel o f the hood, I2 and I 2 are left and right back portions or panels, I3 and I3 are a pair of lat eral wingportions or side panels having arcuate outer edges and facing the front, and I 4 and I4 are a corresponding pair of lateral ring portions or side panels facing the rear Iof the hood. .A semi-circular cut-out in part II and a corresponding cut-out in part II' define a face opening I5; the lower edge of the face opening I5 is bordered preferably by an arcuate strip of semielastic laterally expansible material IB, which houses two drawstrings I1, Il for the purpose of adjusting the size of the face opening I5.

The hood is assembled in the following manner: `Parts II and II' are joined together in a seam extending downwardly from the crown to the upper edge of the face opening I5, and from the lower edge of the face opening I5 to the low- Ierm-ost edge of the hood. The inner edge of lateral wing portion I3 is sewn to the outer edge of the front'portion II from a point 23 situated at the lower edge of the hood upwardly Aalong the entire length of the inner edge of lateral wing portion I3; lateral wing portion I3' is correspondingly sewn to front portion II upwardly from point 23 situated opposite point 23 at the lower edge of the hoo-d. 9. A hood according to claim 4, wherein the outer edges of said side panels are arcuate.

10. In a hood according to claim 1, drawstring means for adjusting the size of said face opening, and drawstring housing means joined to said front portion in a position bordering said face opening.

11. In a hood according to claim 1, drawstring means for adjusting the size of said face opening, and an arcuate housing for said drawstring means, said housing being joined to said front portion in a position bordering the lower margin of said face opening.

A hood comprising a front panel having a face opening, drawstring means for adjusting the size of said face opening, a back panel, and two pairs of side panels, one pair of said side panels joined at their inner edges to said front panel, the other pair of said side panels joined at their inner edges to said back panel, and the outer edge of each side panel joined to the outer edge of the opposite side panel.

A hood comprising a front panel having a face opening, drawstring means for adjusting the size of said face opening, an arcuate housing for said drawstring means bordering the lower margin of said face opening, a back panel and two pairs of side panels, one pair of said side panels joined at their inner edge to said front panel, the other pair of said side panels joined at their inner edge to said back panel, and the outer edge of each side panel joined to the outer edge of the opposite side panel.

A hood adapted to extend below the neck of the wearer, comprising a front panel having a face opening, drawstring means for adjusting the size 01"' said fac'e opening and an arcuate housing for said drawstring means bordering the lower margin of said face opening, a vback panel, two pairs of side panels having outer arcuate edges, one pair of said side panels joined at their inner edges to said front panel, the other pair of said side panels joined at their inner edges to said back panel, and the outer edge of each side panel joined to the outer edge of the opposite side panel, drawstring means for tightening the hood around the neck of the wearer, and means for housing said last-named drawstring means in the neck portion of said hood, said last-named drawstring housing comprising spaced, substantially horizontal tunnel pieces.
