PROTECTIVE HOOD Filed Sept. 20, 1945 `2 Sheets-Sheet 2 2G' irren/Vey Patented Aug. 31, 1948 2,448,021- .PROTECTIVE H001). Joseph De Grazia, Washington, D. C. Application September-20, 1945, Serial No. 617,661
14 claims. (c1. 2 205) 1 (Granted under the act amended April 30, 19
The invention described herein, if patented, may be manufactured and used by or for` the Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to a protective hood adapted to -t over a gas mask.
In an area contaminated with a. vesicant gas, the body of the soldier is protected, at least temporarily, by his uniform, and his face and respiratory organs are protected by a gas mask. However, the back lof the head, including the ears, and the neck are exposed to the vesicant action of the gas which quickly causes him to become a casualty.
It is known to equip gas contamination squads with gas-impervious suits which protect the body from head to foot. Such protective suits are impracticable as standard equipment for soldiers because of their weight and bulk, and because of the discomfort caused by the wearing. Such suits would also be useless in a surprise attack because of the length of time needed for putting them on.
The protection against vesicant gas afforded thesoldier by his clothing (for instance, shirt, trousers, gloves, shoes) is greatly increased by iinpregnating it with gas-,impervious material. To do the same with conventional headgear, such as toques, winter caps, etc., will not produce the desired result, as they do not t over the gas mask and do not provide a gas tight seal at their lower edges.
It is therefore an objectof this invention to provide a protective hood that can be worn over a gas mask.
Another object is a hood which is light and adapted to be folded compactly when not in use, so that it may 'be carried in the gas mask container.
Another object of the invention is a hood for protection against vesicant gases, which can be conveniently tightened around the neck of the wearer so as to provide a gas proof seal.
A further object of the invention is a hood construction permitting its Ilateral expansion, so that it can be slid over a gas mask.
Qther objects of the invention will be readily apparent from the following @serieuse and appended drawings.
A hood in accordance with the present invention comprises a conventional front panel with a face opening, a conventional back panel, and novel side panels, which permit the hood to expand to a width sufficient to fit over the head of the wearer while he is using his gas mask. Tight# offMarch 3, 1883, as 28; 370 0. G. 757) ening means, such as a drawstring, reduce the width of the hood around the neck of the wearer, so as to provide a gas proof seal. The front, back and side portions are of sufcient length to extend below the neck of the wearer; when the h ood is tightened around the neck of the wearer the lowermost portion of the hood flares out so as to lie substantially fiat on the shoulder of the shirt or coat of the wearer. The hood is preferably impregnated with a gas-impervious material.
A preferred embodiment of a protective hood In accordance with my invention is shown in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hood in use in connection with a gas mask;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of a hood in accordance with my invention;
Figure 3 is a side view, and
Figure 4 is a rear view corresponding to Fig- '.ure 2;
Figure 5 is a detailed view in perspective, of a portion of the hood, marked 5f-5 in Figure 2, viewed from the inside; and
Figure 6 is a lay-out of the fabric parts which are component parts of the hood.
More particularly, parts Il and II' are, respectively, a left and right front portion or panel o f the hood, I2 and I 2 are left and right back portions or panels, I3 and I3 are a pair of lat eral wingportions or side panels having arcuate outer edges and facing the front, and I 4 and I4 are a corresponding pair of lateral ring portions or side panels facing the rear Iof the hood. .A semi-circular cut-out in part II and a corresponding cut-out in part II' define a face opening I5; the lower edge of the face opening I5 is bordered preferably by an arcuate strip of semielastic laterally expansible material IB, which houses two drawstrings I1, Il for the purpose of adjusting the size of the face opening I5.
The hood is assembled in the following manner: `Parts II and II' are joined together in a seam extending downwardly from the crown to the upper edge of the face opening I5, and from the lower edge of the face opening I5 to the low- Ierm-ost edge of the hood. The inner edge of lateral wing portion I3 is sewn to the outer edge of the front'portion II from a point 23 situated at the lower edge of the hood upwardly Aalong the entire length of the inner edge of lateral wing portion I3; lateral wing portion I3' is correspondingly sewn to front portion II upwardly from point 23 situated opposite point 23 at the lower edge of the hoo-d. Lateral wing portion I4 is seam, and lateral wing portions I3 and.. .l.4. are
joined together by a corresponding searn''and= are joined 130,I eahgothellby from, the crown ef the, hood to the lowermost edgey thereof; and areY II and II' by seams ex-fI back portions I2, I2' a rear seam extending joined to `front portions n tending from the crown of the hood to the upper'- most points of lateral wing portions .I3,' 'IA, `arid I3', III. Preferably, the joined-togetherrllower edges of lateral wing portions I3, I4 are sewn to the lower edge of back portion I2 ina seam extending'rearwardly .from point 23 and acorresponding seam unites the joine-d-togetherlower edges off lateral wingfportions I3', .III to lower edgeof back portion I2 rearwardly from point 23'. It is obvious that the sequence of assembling operati'onsrnay bevaried atgwill, without,
however, lchanging the relative relation of the individual 'component parts. l, l The hood, as assembled in accordance with the foregoinginstructions, now has two pocket-like expansijble lateral extensions. These` expansible pockets enable the` user to draw thehood over bulky headgear, such as a gas mask.: `Means for tightening the hood laround the neck, after it has been put on, areprovided as follows; i `An oblong rectangular tunnelpiece I8 is joined to lateral wing portion I3. and frontv portion Il by two substantially horizontalseam's alongthe upper and lower margin of .tunnel piece I8, and a corresponding tunnel piece I8 is joined towing portion I3' and front portion"II. AAthird rectangular tunnel piece I 9 is joined to back portions I2, l2', substantially in line with tunnel pieces I8, I 8 ,'lby.. two substantially horizontal seams-along the upper and lowermargins of tunnel piece I9.I Drawstring means ZUthroughtunnel pieces I8,I8, I 9 permit the spaced tunnel-pieces to be drawn togethenwhich results in a tightening-ofr the neck portion,as is, for instance, illustrated in Figure 4. Drawstringl'may be semi-circular, with ends fastened at points v'2I,2I, -to the outer edges Yoi lateral wing portions- I3,I4 andA I3,I4"; or the drawstring may be endless (not shown). 22 represents 'tightening means for drawstring 2D, such as asliding perforated ball. v
The foregoing description of an example of a hood," in accordance withv my invention, is not to be taken as a limitaton of the scope of'my invention tothe 'specic construction shown, but rather as an illustration of 'a preferred manner joy/which the objects of', my invention may be attained. Modifications thereof within the scope of my invention'will readily' occur to the expert. I therefore intend .toclaim my inventionQbroadly, and to be limited only by the appended claimsl I' Ifclaim: t
