This invention relates to. new and useful improvements in'books of reading matter, and the like and has more particular reference to a new construction and arrangement of a'book' in a box.

More particularly, the new and improved book in a box, is characterized by an open top box provided with a." cover andia strip of accordion folded pages for engagement in the. box and having its top page connected with said cover and its bottom page connected. with said box. Withthisarrangement it is possible to close the accordion pages and place the cover on the box and the article is ready to be stored away, or shipped. asdesired. When itis. desired toinspect the pages in the box, it is merely necessary to lift the cover off of the box, and because the accordion folded pages are connected with the cover and with the box they will be stretched. This permits. their inspection. A book inwabox of this new construction is exceptionally attractive and desirable and will be easily salable as a new item.

The invention also contemplates modified forms, .one of which is disclosed in this specification which distinguishes from the prior form in the manner in which the strip of accordion folded pages are connected with the cover and the box. In the first form of the invention the pages were pasted to the cover and the box. In the second form they are adjustably connected in such a manner that they may be slipped into a desirable position to add to the interest and ease of inspecting the pages.

Still further the invention contemplates the construction of a book in a box as briefly explained, which is exceptionally simple and which may be manufactured and sold at a low cost.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a book in a box constructed in accordance with this invention and illustrated in a closed position.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the book in the box shown in Fig. 1 but illustrated in a partially opened up position.

The new and improved book in a box as disclosed in that form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to3 inclusive, includes an open top box In provided with-a cover I I and a-strip of accordion folded pages [2 for engagement in the box It] and having its top page [4 connected with the cover I I along an end portion by adhesive 15. The bottom page I6 is connected with the box I!) along an end portion with adhesive l1. Views, pictures, or other reading matter are imprinted on the pages 12.

The operation and use of the book in a box may be understood from the following:

In Fig. 1 it is illustrated in a closed position. In this condition it may be stored away, or shipped, as desired. When it is desired to read, or inspect the pages of the new book it is merely necessary to grip the cover II and move said cover upwards relative to the box In so that the strip of accordion folded pages 12 are extended and opened up, as for example illustrated in Fig. 2. They may now be inspected.

In Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive, a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which is very similar to the prior form distinguishing merely in the way in which the strip of folded pages I! are connected with the cover H and box I0. This connection includes track-like strips 20, mounted within said box and said cover and having slots 2| connecting with enlarged circular openings 22 on the front ends of the strips 20. The track-like strips 20 are of angle form. Their top flanges are provided with prongs 23 which are engaged through adjacent walls of the cover and box and are bent down so as to fixedly hold the tracklike strip in position.

The strip of accordion folded pages I2 is provided with bar-like strips 25 attached to the end portions of the top and bottom pages I4 and I6 respectively. These bar-like strips 25 have their end portions slidably and non-rotatively engaged in the slots 2|. In cross section, the bar-like strips 25 are rectangular and the end portions engage the long way in the slots 2|. This is the reason why the bar-like strips 25 may slide but can not be turned. However, the circular openings 22 on the fronts of the track-like strips 20 are of such sizes as to receive the end portions of the bar-like strips 25 so that they may be turned.

The operation of this form of the invention may be understood from the following:

In Fig. 4 the new and improved book in a box is shown in a partially opened position. It is possible .to slip the bar-like strips 25 forwards so that their ends engage the circular openings 22 and then the cover I! and box l may be separated as far as is possible so that the strip of accordion folded pages I2 is straight, and all the pages are in a common plane. This is illustrated in Fig. '7. In this condition of the pages they may all be easily inspected. The book in a box may be folded up by first turning the bar-like strips 25 and then sliding them back to the back ends of the slots 2|. The cover ll may then be set down on the box In with the strip of foldable pages will become folded within the box Hi.

It is to be understood that the accordion pages I 2 may be of any suitable length and may contain either illustrations or reading matter.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the,

right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:

1. A book in a box, comprising an open top box provided with a cover, track-like strips mounted within said box and within said cover and having slots connecting with enlarged circular openings at the front ends, a strip of accordion folded pages for engagement in said box and having bar-- like strips attached to the end portions of its top and bottom pages, and the ends of said bar-like strips being slidably and non-rotatively engaged in said slots and being turnable in said enlarged circular openings.

2. A book in a box, comprising an open top box provided with a cover, track-like strips mounted within said box and within said cover and having slots connecting with enlarged circular openings at the front ends, a strip of accordion folded pages, and the ends of said bar-like strips being slidably and non-rotatively engaged in said slots and being turnable in said enlarged circular openings, said track-like strips being of angle shapes and having their top flanges provided with prongs rngaging through the adjacent walls of said box and cover by which they are mounted on said box and cover.

3. A book in a box, comprising an open top box provided with a cover, track-like strips mounted within said box and within said cover and having slots connecting with enlarged circular openings at the front ends, a strip of accordion folded pages for engagement in said box and having barlike strips attached to the end portions of its top and bottom pages, and the ends of said bar-like strips being slidably and non-rotatively engaged in said slots and being turnable in said enlarged circular openings, said bar-like strips being rectangularly shaped in transverse cross section and being arranged with their long dimensions extending longitudinally within the said slots.
