The present invention relates to a lamp and refers more particularly to a novelty lamp whose shade is in the form of a church with a, steeple, the illuminating means in the lamp causing light to pass through translucent portions of the shade representing the church windows, and. a motor concealed the lamp shade causing a bell in the church steeple to ring at intervals.
An object of the present invention is to create a piece oi'home furniture inthe form of a lamp particularly suited to certain seasons of the year, such as Christmas.
Another object is the provision of a novelty lamp in the nature of a toy which children of suitable age might be trusted to operate.
A further object is the provision of a source of light and soundboth subdued and of pleasant character and psychological associations, which may be connected to an electric alarm clock to furnish light and sound alarm signals to awake a sleeper more gently and eiiectively than is done by the bell of a mechanical or electric alarm clock.
Another and further object is the provision of a mechanism suitable for advertising displays.
In accomplishing the objects of the present invention, a lamp stand is provided comprising a double socket, one outlet connection of which may be used for an electric bulb for illuminating purposes, the other outlet of which furnishes urrent to an electric motor. The lamp i provided with a lamp shade in the form of a church or the like. the lamp shade comprising translucent window portions and relatively opaque wall portions, so that the windows appear brighter than the other portions to give an appearance of an interiorly illuminated building.
The lamp shade includes a steeple portion in which is hung a bell, and the above mentioned motor has an arm connected to its shaft perpendicularly and revolving slowly so as to engage an arm connectedto the mounting of the bell so that the bell rings periodically. The bell eX- tends with its axis at a permanently fixed angle to the armto which it is connected, so that the weight of the'bell causes this arm to assume when at rest, a position inclined to the vertical, for better ringing of the bell by means of the revolving arm connected to the motor.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claimsin which the various novel features of the invention: are: more particularly set forth.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, my improved lamp H3 comprises a lamp stand. II, the latter comprising a base portion l2 and pedestal portion !3 the exact shape of eitherof which is not important. Lamp Ii] further com.- prises a lamp shade 14 in the shape of a church comprising a main body portion l5 and a steeple portion 16.
Body portion 15 comprises the windowportions H of translucent material while portion 15 is constructed of relatively less translucent material, being totally or partially opaque sothat illumination from a light source within body I5 will show the windows as relatively brilliant against the background of body I 5.
A conical summit portion E8 of steeple IE is removable from steeple H5 for convenience in packing lamp 19 for shipment or storage, and
steeple IS is removable from body portion IS, the
latter preferably being removable from stand portion 1!, the particular method of connection of body portion 55 to stand portion llbeing unimportant.
Stand portion H comprises the switch socket l9 controlled by the pull chain 20 and mounted on pedestal 13. In socket I9 is threadedly mounted the double socket 2! and in the latter is mounted the electric bulb 22 and the female plug'23. Engageable in plug 23 is the male plug 24 of lead wire 25 of electric motor 26.
Motor 25 is mounted on a reduction gear box 2! by which the efiective speed of the motor 25 is reduced, the last driven shaft 28 revolving preferably at 15 R. P. M. Mounted on shaft 28 and extending perpendicularly thereto is the motor arm 29. Shaft 28 and arm 29 revolve counterclockwise of Figs. 3 and 4 as indicated by the arrows.
Motor 28 and gear box 21 are mounted on the side wall of steeple [6 by the studs 30 shown in Fig. 2.
The bell bar 5! extends between opposit'e'wal-ls of steeple l6 and comprises the substantially U- shaped lever arm 32 extending downwardly therefrom. Lever arm 32 is integral with bar 3|, the latter being pivotally mounted so that arm 32 is swingable in a limited arc.
The bell 33 is suspended from bar 3! by means of the beam 34 to which it is firmly connected against any relative motion and which extends at a substantial angle, preferably 46, to arm 32, being fixed firmly to bar 3| against any motion relative thereto. Bell 33 being relatively heavy, its downward pull on beam 34 actuates arm 32 to the right of Figs. 3 and 4, the right limit of motion being established by the stop bar 35 mounted on a wall of steeple l6 and extending in the arc of motion of arm 32 so as to engage the same to limit rightward motion.
A clapper 36 is freely suspended from an eye 3'! in bell 33 and in the position of rest of bell 33 illustrated in Fig. 3, clapper 36 is hanging free of engagement with bell 33 but very near a side thereof.
In operation, furnishing of electric current to socket l9 by means of operation of chain 28 illuminates bulb 22 and causes motor 26 to rotate, operating shaft 28 and motor arm '29 counterclockwise of Figs. 3 and 4. Arm 29 engages lever arm 32 moving it to the position of Fig. 4, bell 33 assuming the position of Fig. 4 since it is fixed against movement relative to arm 32. As arm 29 continues to revolve counter-clockwise, it releases lever arm 32 which, actuated by the weight of hell 33, falls back suddenly to the position of Fig. 3. Clapper 36, which is resting against bell 33 in Fig. 4, as bell 33 is suddenl stopped in the position of Fig. 3 bounces away therefrom and then returns to strike bell 33, since the distance from its position of rest illustrated in Fig. 3 to a striking position illustrated in Fig. 4- is so small that it is readily traversed by the vibration of clapper 36 after bouncing away from bell 33 when it suddenly stops in the position of Fig. 3.
Plug 24 may be disconnected from plug 23 if operation of bell 33 is not desired.
In Fig. a transparent conical steeple body portion I8 is shown mounted on a base having the device attached thereto.
It is to be understood that the device ma be made without any lamp shade, built in a suitable container with one or more bells placed at difierent angles from each other to produce multisound or with a lamp shade containing one or more bells.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a lamp having a base, a lamp shade mounted on said base, a lamp mounted on said base within said shade for illuminating the shade, a bell crank pivotally supported within said shade, a bell fixed to said crank to ring when the bell crank is turned, a rotative lever arm having its free end traversing the pivotal path of said bell crank to pivot the bell crank and ring said bell once for each revolution of said lever arm, and means for rotating said lever arm.
2. In a lamp having a base, a lamp shade mounted on said base, a lamp mounted on said base within said shade for illuminating the shade, a bell crank pivotally supported within said shade, a bell fixed to said crank to ring when the bell crank is turned, a rotative lever arm having its free end traversing the pivotal path of said bell crank to pivot the bell crank and ring said bell once for each revolution of said lever arm, and means for rotating said lever arm, said rotating means comprises an electric motor within said lamp shade, and a gear reduction unit connecting the driven shaft of said motor with said lever arm.
3. In a novelty lamp, in combination, with a lamp stand comprising illuminating means, a lamp shade mounted on said stand and constituting a simulated church, said shade comprising a main body portion and a steeple portion, said steeple portion comprising one or more bells, said shade further comprising bell ringing means, said bell ringing means comprising an electric motor, a speed reducing gear box, a motor arm mounted on the last shaft of said gear box and extending perpendicularly thereto, said bell comprising a bell bar and a lever arm extending at an angle thereto and in fixed relation thereto, said motor arm contacting said lever arm to swing the same and ring said bell.
4. In a novelty lamp, in combination with a lamp stand comprising illuminating means, a lamp shade mounted on said stand and constituting a simulated church, said shade comprising a main body portion and a steeple portion, said steeple portion comprising one or more bells, said shade further comprising bell ringing means, said bell comprising a bell bar pivotally mounted in said steeple portion, said bell bar comprising a lever arm portion extending at an angle and in fixed relation thereto, said bell being firmly connected to said bell bar and extending therefrom with its axis inclined at a substantial angle to said lever arm, said bell ringing means comprising a rotary arm operative to swing said lever arm to ring said hell.
5. In a novelty lamp, in combination, With a lamp stand comprising illuminating means, a lamp shade mounted on said stand and constituting a simulated church, said shade comprising a main body portion and a steeple portion, said steeple portion comprising one or more bells, said shade further comprising bell ringing means, said bell comprising a bell bar pivotally mounted in said steeple portion, said bell bar comprising a lever arm portion extending at an angle thereto and in fixed relation thereto, said bell being firmly connected to said bell bar and extending therefrom with its axis inclined at a substantial angle to said lever arm, said bell ringing means comprising a rotary arm operative to swing said said lever arm to ring said bell, said bell ringing means further comprising a stop bar extending in the arc of motion of said lever arm and adapted to limit the motion of same.
6. In a novelty lamp, in combination, with a lamp stand comprising illuminating means, a lamp shade mounted on said stand and constituting a simulated church, said shade comprising a main body portion and a steeple portion, said steeple portion comprising one or more bells, said shade further comprising bell ringing means, said bell comprising a bell bar pivotally mounted in said steeple portion, said bell bar comprising a lever arm portion extending at an angle thereto and in fixed relation thereto, said bell being firmly connected to said bell bar and extending therefrom with its axis inclined at a substantial angle to said lever arm, said bell ringing means comprising a rotary arm operative to swing said lever arm to ring said bell, said bell ringing means further comprising a stop bar extending in the arc of motion of said lever arm and adapted to limit the motion of same, said ball being relative heavy and adapted to actuate said lever arm into a position of rest in which it engages said stop bar and in which it is inclined to the vertical.
7. In a novelty lamp, in combination, with a lamp stand comprising illuminating means, a lamp shade mounted on said stand and constituting a simulated church, said shade comprising a main body portion and a steeple portion, said steeple portion comprising one or more bells, said shade further comprising bell ringing means, said bell comprising a bell bar pivotally mounted in said steeple portion, said bell bar comprising a lever arm portion extending at an angle thereto and in fixed relation thereto, said bell being firmly connected to said bell bar and extending therefrom with its aXis inclined at a substantial angle to said lever arm, said bell ringing means comprising a rotary arm operative to swing said lever arm to ring said bell, said bell ringing means further comprising a stop bar extending in the arc motion of said lever arm and adapted to limit the motion of same, said bell being relatively heavy and adapted to actuate said lever arm into a position of rest in which it engages said stop bar and in which it is inclined to the vertical, said bell further comprising an eye and a clapper freely suspended from said eye, said bell in its position of rest having its axis inclined to the vertical and a portion of its body adjacent said freely hanging clapper.
8. In a novelty lamp, in combination with a lamp stand comprising illuminating means, a lamp shade mounted on said stand and constituting a simulated church, said shade comprising a main body portion and a steeple portion, said steeple portion comprising one or more bells, said shade further comprising bell ringing means, said bell comprising a bell bar pivotally mounted in said steeple portion, said bell bar comprising a lever arm portion extending at an angle thereto and in fixed relation thereto, said bell being firmly connected to said bell bar and extending therefrom with its axis inclined at a substantial angle to said lever arm, said bell ringing means com prising a rotary arm operative to swing said lever arm to ring said bell, said bell ringing means further comprising a stop bar extending in the arc of motion of said lever arm and adapted to limit the motion of the same, said bell being relatively heavy and adapted to actuate said lever arm into a position of rest in which it engages said stop bar and in which it is inclined to the vertical, said bell further comprising an eye and a clapper freely suspended from said eye, said bell in its position of rest having its axis inclined to the vertical and a portion of its body adjacent said freely hanging clapper, said bell ringing means being actuated by an electric motor means controlled by a switch means comon to said illuminating means.
