Claims.

This invention relates to a filter cartridge package for the shipping and storing of a filter cartridge.

In the use of a soft resilient cartridge of the type formed of Waste or some soft material, with a knitted fabric sock over the same, it is desirable to position such a cartridge in a cylindrical sleeve for storing the same, in order to maintain the size of the cartridge so that it may be slipped into a filter case when desired. In the supplying of filter cartridges, it is usually desirable to furnish washers for the filter case in the filter package of the type above described, and there has been no convenient way of storing washers as an adjunct with such cartridge.

One of the objects of this invention is to provide a package for the convenient storage of a filter cartridge and a washer for the case in which the filter cartridge is to be positioned.

Another object of this invention is to provide an abutment for the filter casing, for removing the cartridge from its package, which will be strong and durable.

Another object of this invention is to utilize the abutment above referred to as a means for strengthening the sleeve which stores the filter cartridge.

Another object of this invention is to utilize the abutment as a, means for protecting and providing a storage position for the washer in the filter case in which the cartridge is to be assembled.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the package opened, with a persons hands in position for forcing the cartridge into the casing.

Figure 2 illustrates the package complete except for being broken away to show a part of the interior thereof.

Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 prior to the removal of the bottom cap.

Figure 4 is a section view, illustrating the cartridge as completely positioned in the filter casing and also the cover for the casing.

In proceeding with this invention, I provide a cylindrical tube or sleeve, usually of cardboard or some comparable material, into which the soft filter cartridge may be positioned. One end of this tube or sleeve is provided with a cover, while the other end is built outwardly with a thickened part spaced from the opposite end of the sleeve which contains the bottom of the cartridge, and on this abutment may be positioned the washer which is used on the top of the case and between it and the cover for the case. The cover may telescope this abutment or thickened portion so as to close the end of the sleeve and also cover the washer which is positioned on the abutment.

With reference to the drawings, l0 designates an engine block having a filter casing ll positioned thereon, and connected in the lubricating system by means of an inlet conduit [2 and an outlet conduit [3. A cover l4 (see Figure 4) is provided for the casing, which is of such a shape that a washer may fit within the recess l5 so as to engage the upper rolled edge iii of the casing and make a tight joint between the cover 14 and the casing I I. A filter cartridge, designated generally I1, is positioned in the casing I l for the proper functioning of the filter. This cartridge is generally cylindrical and of a soft compressible material such as waste with a knitted sock covering, which, when forced into the casing H, with fit snugly against the inner surface of the walls of the casing and prevent liquid from passing freely therealong. This cartridge has a central tube H! to fit over the center tube IQ of the casing, when positioned in the filter casing.

In order to hold this cartridge [7 in its desired size and shape, I provided a cylindrical sleeve 20 of some suitable material such as cardboard into which this soft cartridge I! may be positioned, so as to tightly engage the inner surface of this sleeve. Any expansion of the cartridge due to moisture will be prevented by reason of the sleeve about it. This sleeve also provides a package for storing the cartridge, as well as a guide for the insertion of the cartridge in the casing. The package is completed by a cover 2| at one end of the sleeve 20, which has a, flange 22 to telescope the lower end of the sleeve as shown in Figure 2. At the opposite end portion of the sleeve a collar 23 is positioned at a point spaced from the end 24 of the sleeve. This collar is substantially thicker than the wall of the sleeve and provides a broad abutment surface 25 of a width to receive a washer 26 positioned thereon which will .be received in the recess I5 of the cover I 4 of the filter casing. This abutment also is so arranged that the washer will be positioned directly upon the upper rolled edge of the filter casing I 6 and serve as a stop and a guide for positioning the sleeve 20 in line with the filter casing, as shown in Figure 3. The second cover 21, as shown in Figure 2, is provided to extend over this lower end and has a flange 28 for telescoping the outer surface 29 of this abutment collar 23, so as to close the lower end of the sleeve and cover over the washer 26, which is positioned about the lower end of the sleeve and against the abutment collar 23.

In use it is merely necessary to remove the cover 21, which is at the lower end of the cartridge, position the package as shown in Figure "3, with the edge 24 compressed within the casing, then remove the cover 2| and with the fist, as shown at 30 (Fig. 1) while steadying the sleeve as with the hand 3|, the cartridge may be forced into the casing II from the position shown in Figure 3 to the position shown in Figure 4. The washer may then be positioned in the cover and the cover applied to the casing or the Washer may remain on the upper edge-of the :casing in a position to receive the cover and be lodged .in the recess I5. Some sort of a screw means 33 is provided for attaching the cover to the center tube t9, which is threaded as at '34.

By this arrangement a very sturdy package is provided, wherein a washer may be retained which washer is well protected against abrasion which might occur in shipment were the washer attached tothe outer surface of the sleeve without a cover therefor.

A filter cartridge package comprising an open ended tubular sleeve and a compressible cartridgeof the sock type within said sleeve and frictionally engaging the inner surface thereof, an abutment at one end of the sleeve on the outer surface "thereof to engagethe filter case, comprising a thickened band of material with its end surface spaced inwardly from said end of 4 the sleeve, a washer for the upper edge of a filter case positioned on said abutment encircling said sleeve, said washer being of a thickness less than the distance between said end surface and said end of the sleeve.

2. A filter cartridge package as set forth in claim 1 wherein a cover is positioned over said end .of the sleeve.

3. A filter cartridge package as set forth in claim 1 wherein a cover having a flange telescopes over said end of said sleeve.

=4. A filter cartridge package as set forth in claim 1 wherein a cover is positioned over said end-of the sleeve to telescope the thickened band,

'5. A .filter cartridge package as set forth in claim 1 wherein covers are positioned over the opposite ends of said sleeve.
