Description
"A la June 14, 1949. v l. Bl-:RsHAD PORTABLE CLOTHES DRIER Filed Aug. 1'7, 1944 INVENTOR ATTO R N EY Patented June 14, 1949 UNITED STATES ATENT GFF ICE l Claim. 1
This invention relates to clothes or laundry dryers, and aims to provide a novel, useful and practical portable and collapsible dryer the parts of which can be readily erected or dismantled, and which in dismantled condition may be readily carried in a case with a handle, the latter including the cover therefor constituting elements of the device. y
Another object is the provision of a portable clothes or laundry dryer which is simple to use and inexpensive in cost of manufacture.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the following description wherein characters of reference refer to like-numbered parts in the accompanying drawings. Regarding the drawings, it is to be noted that they are intended for the purpose of illustration only, and it is neither desired no intended to limit the invention in any manner to the specific details of construction shown, including any or all sizes or dimensions, excepting insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention.
Referring briefly to the drawings, Figs. 1 is a perspective view of the device in erected condition ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the partly open case forming parts of the device and in which the remaining parts of the device are transported after dismantling.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I indicates a case having the top wall I I, end walls I2, bottom wall I3, and one side wall I4. One end wall I2, that is, the rear end wall, and both walls I I and I3, have a continuous co-planar internal groove I5 therein in which the cover I6 is slidable. In opening or closing the case or box I0 it will be laid on its side wall I4, as shown in the drawings; but when closed and ready for transport, the box will have the cover I6 on one side thereof, whence it will constitute a side wall. The cover is provided with spaced aligned transverse slots I'I therethrough near the extremities thereof, whose function will be presently set forth. The top wall II is also provided.- with a handle I8 for carrying the case I0.
The end walls I2 are provided on their inner sides with brackets I9, of which but one is shown in Fig. 1, having rectangular openings extending vertically therethrough. For each bracket a post 20 is provided, whose lower extremity 2l is of reduced rectangular cross-section to register in the bracket I9. A shoulder 22 is formed at the upper end of the reduced -extremity 2l and rests upon the upper surface of the bracket I9 when the post is inserted thereinto, as shown in Fig. 1.
Each post has a cross arm 23 which may be secured thereto in any desired manner, such as, for instance, by insertion through a slit 24 cut through the post, The upper extremity 25 of each post is also of reduced rectangular crosssection and a shoulder 2S is thus formed at the base Aof th-e reduced extremity. The slots II through the cover It are of substantially the same dimensions as the upper extremities 25 of the posts. Cords or the like 2'I are secured in the cross arms 23 and strung therebetween, to serve as lines on which the clothes or laundry may be hung for drying. Should it be desired for any reason whatever to cover the lines 21 with the clothes hanging therefrom, the cover I6 is mounted in the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 1, with the upper post extremities 25 registering in and projecting through the cover slots I'I so that the cover IB is firmly supported on the shoulders 26.
After finishing with the dryer, the posts 20 are easily lifted out of their sockets in the brackets I9, and they are then laid in the box on the side wall I4 (which then serves as the bottom of the box), as indicated in Fig. 2. The cover I6 is then slid home in its slot or groove I5, and the closed case is carried in th-e manner of a suit case by means of the handle I8.
The device above set forth enables a person who is traveling, staying at a hotel, boarding house or in any location where laundry facilities are inadequate or unobtainable, to wash and dry his or her clothes with a maximum of convenience. The collapsed dryer within the case may easily be carried either on trains, ships, or in an automobile or bus.
Obviously, modifications in form and structure may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
As shown in Fig. 1, an additional cord or the like 28 is strung between the posts 20 and passes through the top of the posts and their respective cross arms 23. This line 28 can thus be provided without increasing the bulk or the dimensions of the device.
A pivoted latch 29 is also provided on the end wall I2, whereby the cover I6 may be releasably locked in closed position on the box. It is further to be noted that the cover i6, when in vthe elevated position shown in Fig. 1, also serves as a reinforcement to prevent the poles 20 from tipping toward each other.
I claim:
A clothes dryer comprising a support having two opposed vertical and parallel walls, said walls 3 having brackets secured to the inner faces thereof, said brackets having Vertical openings therethrough, posts rectangular in cross-section and having reduced lower extremities providing horizontal shoulders near the lower ends of said posts, said lower extremities of said posts removably registering in said bracket openings with said shoulders resting on said brackets, said posts thereby being removably and loosely mounted in said brackets, said posts having cross-arms secured thereto near the upper ends thereof, cords strung between said cross-arms, a rigid roof-like panel member removably mounted on said posts to provide a cover for said cords and simultaneously a rigid spacer between the upper ends of said posts to prevent tipping of said posts toward each other, said member having centrally positioned lateral rectangular slots therein near `4 the ends thereof, said upper ends of said posts having reduced dimensions and registering in said slots of said rigid member.
