Description

N V- 1, 19 J. A. SCHOE'NDORF UNDERWEAR Filed April 19, 1945 INVENTOR Jase J12 A. 5Z72oendorf ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 1, 1949 2,486,499 UNDERWEAR J oseph A. Schoendorf, NlWiCh,-N. Y., assignor to Norwich Knitting Company, Norwich, N. Y., a
corporation Application April 19, 1945, Serial No. 589,177
Claims. (Cl. 2-224) This invention relates to underwear. It is particularly directed to mens shorts or briefs.
- An object of this invention is to provide a garment of the character described provided at the front with a fly portion of double thickness extending from the waist to the crotch, and reinforced at the sides thereof and comprising front and rear superimposed sheets, the front sheet forming an opening with the reinforcement on one side, and the rear sheet forming an opening with the reinforcement on the opposite side of said fly portion.
Another object of this invention is to provide a' garment of the character described having a crotch piece of double thickness extending from the bottom of one leg to the bottom of the other leg, with the ribbing extending up anddown at the front of the garment, but running from side to side at the crotch so as to give extra stretch in the crotch.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide in a garment of the character described, a gusset at the back of the garment adjacent the crotch piece, said gusset being of double fabric to give more seat room, thereby making the garment more serviceable because of wear at the region of the gusset.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable garment of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, comfortable to wear, attractive in appearance, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be eXemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of the garment embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view thereof;
' Fig. 3 is a bottom view thereof;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fi 1;
Fig. 5 is a partial, enlarged, cross-sectional view taken on line 5-5 of .Fig. 1; and
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 66 of Fig. 2.
Referring, now in. detail to the drawing, I0
designates a garment embodying the invention, here shown in the form of a brief -or short. The
arment comprises a top waist band H, a body portion [3, a fly portion It, a crotch portion 19, and a back gusset 40. The band I l is preferably made of longitudinally elastic material. Said band I! may be made from one length, with the meeting ends stitched at the back as at Ma. Stitched to the lower edge of the band I l as at ii. is the body portion [3 which extends from one side of the fly portion all around the body of the wearer to the other side of the fly portion. The body portion I3 is preferably made of woven or knitted material with the ribbing running up and down so that the cloth will give in the width.
Said body l3 has an edge M on one side of the fly l3 and an edge IS on the opposite side of the fly. The edges l4 and [5 are on opposite sides of the middle-of the garment. These edges converge upwardly.
Interconnecting the edges M and i5 is the fly portion [6 which is of double thickness, and consists of a front piece of cloth I! and a rear or inside piece of cloth [8. The front piece of cloth I! has a cutaway adjacent the edge is extending from the crotch l9 about halfway up, thereby forming an opening 20. At the edge I5 is a re inforcing strip 2| which connects sheet 18 and a portion of sheet I! to the body [3. The inside sheet I8 is formed with a cutaway extending from the crotch about halfway up thereby form-- ing an opening 23 with the edge l4. Interconnecting all of sheet 'l'! and part of sheet It with edge [4 is a reinforcing strip 24. The reinforcing strips 2| and 24 converge upwardly, as shown in Fig.1 of the drawing. They may be made of knitted textile cloth, the same as the body with the ribs running up and down. At opening 2t, sheet [1 is provided with a curved reinforcing tape 25 stitched thereto as at 2B. The reinforcing tape 25 is doubled as shown in Fig. 5. At the opening 23 there is stitched to the inner sheet [8 areinforcing tape 21. The tape 21 is also doubled as shown in Fig.5. The tape 21 is stitched to sheet [8 by stitching 29. I
-It will be noted that sheet l8 and the upper edge of sheet I! are stitched to the edge l5 of body [3. by stitching [8a, whereas sheet l? and the upper edge of sheet [8 are stitched to the edge M of body [3 bystitching Ila. It will now be understood that overlapping sheets I! and it and openings 20, 23 produces a fly front for the garment.
The body I3 has pant leg portions 30. The crotch 19 extends from the bottom of one pant leg to the bottom of the other pant leg. Each pant leg portion 30 has a front and rear edge stitched to the front and rear edges of the crotch piece [9 as by stitching 3| and 32, respectively. The crotch piece [9 is likewise of double thickness being formed of an inner sheet 34 and an outer sheet 35. At the front of the crotch pieces is the stitching 3| which extends from the bottom of one pant leg to the bottom of the other pant leg at the front. At the rear of the crotch piece I9 is the stitching 32 which extends from the bot tom of one pant leg to the bottom of the other pant leg. The ribbing of the sheets 34, 35 extends from one pant leg to. the other, or side to side, so that the crotch piece will give in a direc--. tion from front to rear thereby making the garment more comfortable. The crotch piece beingv of double fabric, provides for durability.
The body portion 13 is split upwardly at the rear to form split ed es 31 which are spaced apart, and the gusset 49 is interposed between the edges 37. The gusset 4 is generally of tri-. angular shape and is stitched to. ed e 3'! of the body by lines of stitching 41 which extend from line of stitching 32 upwardly to a point where they are joined at an apex 43. Thus the bottom or base of the gusset is stitched to the crotch piece l9 by line of stitching 32.. The usset is likewise of double thickness comprising an outersheet 45 and an inner sheet 46. Sheets 45, 46 are supe posed as sh n in. Fig. 2 or the draw 111g.
At the lower end of the pant legs 30, the mate: rial is hemmed upwar ly s ho n. in Fi 6 the drawing. The folded up or hemmed portion Q is stitched in each pant leg 30 as bylines ofstitching 5| which extends from the line of stitching 3! around to the line of stitching 32.
It will thus be seen that ther is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well; adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim r as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
