L. LEMOS.
SHIRT. No. 249,062. Patented Nov. 1,1881.
WITNESSES I INvEiIfUR Nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEON LEMOS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,062, dated November 1, 1881. Application filed May 16, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON LEMOS, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toa button-hole guard or stud-protector at the back of the neckband and to a button-hole tab in front of the neckband of a shirt.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a view showing the upper part of a shirt havingmyimprovements thereon. Fig. 2is a cross,- sectional view on line XXofFig. 1. Fig. 3 is across-sectional view on line Y Y of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference are used to designate like parts throughout the several views.
Heretofore great inconvenience has been experienced in shirts constructed in the ordinary manner from the chafing of the base-plate of the collarbutton upon the back of the neck of the wearer, and the same inconvenience has been experienced to agreater or less extentin the use of the collar button or stud in front of the neckband. These objections are overcome by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Upon the inner side of one end of the neckband A, or that end which comes next to the back of the neck of the wearer, and so as to cover the button-hole made for the reception of the collar button or stud, I attach the button-hole guard or stud-protector B. This studprotector is formed of a-rectangular piece of cloth, and is attached to the neckbanil by stitches a upon its lower edge and at either end, as shown at Fig. 1, the top edge being left unstitched to the neckbaud for convenience in inserting the collar button or stud. To the lower edge of the front of the neckband, and on the outside thereof, I attach by stitches the tab C, which is to be provided with a button-hole for the reception of the front collar button or stud. The stitches which secure the tab to the neckband are taken upon its lower edge only, for it the tab were secured to the neckband byits upper edge'it would allow the front of the collar to lift or work upward around the neck of the wearer; but by being attached by its lower edge the tendency of the collar to lift will cause the tab to lie flat against the neckband, and the collar will be heldin its proper position.
It will be seen that by this construction the necessity for forming a button-hole in the front of the neekband is avoided, and, further, that when the garmentis not in use it may be hung up by this tab, and thus avoid soiling or crumpling of the bosom.
I am aware that a fly has heretofore been attached to the inner face of the neckband or other part of a shirt which is provided with a stud-receiving button-hole, in position to cover said button-hole and keep the inner head of the stud from coming in contact with the person of the wearer, and that one of the edges of said 'tly has been left unattached to the shirt in order to permit access to be had to the buttonhole from the rear; but this I do not broadly claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination, with a shirt, of the buttonhole guard or stud-protector B, attached on three sides to the inner face of the rear portion of the neckband, and the tab or flap C, attached by its lower edge to the outer face of the front of said band, and provided with a button-hole, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 28th day of April, 18 1.
