This invention is a lipstick holder and the dominant object thereof is realized in the provision of effectiv means automatically operable upon mounting of closure means in the form of a cap on the jacket of the holder to deflect spring detent means for removably interlocking with a rotatable barrel in which a lipstick sustaining cup is slidably and rotatably guided to preclude accidental displacement of the cup and concomitantly preventing involuntary removal of the cap by the lipstick. Another object of the invention is to lock the cup against upward displacement when the closure means is shifted downwardly on the jacket. Another object is to permit rotation of the cup actuating means upon removal of the closure from the jacket of the holder. Another object resides in th provision of locking means responsive on the mounting of the cap on the jacket to prevent rotation of the barrel and consequently of the cup at a time when the latter is at its lowest position within the jacket. Another object is to preclude fully closing of the cap unless the lipstick seat of the displaceable cup is at the lowest part of the cam slot of a split bearing rotatably guiding the barrel and firmly retained by the surrounding jacket. In the embodiment according to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive the holder H is characterized by a. cylindrical barrel or shell S having the relatively large knob or manipulating portion K appro priately fastened thereto. This shell also em bodies the vertically arranged slot [0 and the keeper means or opening H and thestruck out overhanging annular but hollow bead l2.
Slidably guided within the barrel or shell S is the cylindrical lipstick receiving and sustaining cup [4 having appropriately securedtherein the diametrically arranged pin l5 having a terminal l 6 projecting into the elongated slot Ill whose spaced and vertical Walls movably guide pin l5 relative to the shell S.
The terminal or projecting means It of the pin or seat l5 also projects into the helicoidal cam slot ll of the cylindrical sheet metal bearing or sleeve l8 which closely encompasses shell S. Sleeve i8 is interrupted by the elongated vertical slot or gap I9 defining spaced and vertically disposed walls in turn interrupted by the alined notches or gaps 20.
For holding the normally expanded sleeve or bearing !8 slightly compressed about the shell S, a hollow cylindrical retaining jacket 2| is utilized. More specifically. jacket 2| frictionally engages The cup I4 bodily rotates with shell S since 1,
terminal I6 is interlocked with the walls of the vertical slot I0. This cup however is also slidably mounted within the bore of the shell orbarrel S and since the terminal It projects into the spiral slot II, the spaced cam walls of the latter actuate terminal I6 upon rotation of the barrel or shell S to either elevate or lower the cup I4 relative to the vertical slot I6 depending upon the direction of rotation of the knob K but at this time the cup I4 also bodily rotates with the barrel S. Qonsequently if alipstick L be seated on the pin I5 it may be projected out of the barrel S and if projected it may be thereafter retracted into the barrel upon rotation of knob K.

h With the cup It in its lowest position within the barrel S', the terminal I6 oi the cross pin or seat I 5 is at the lowest part of the cam or a spiral slot IT at which time opening or socket II of the rotatable barrel S registers or is in line with the notches 26 of the bearing or sleeve I8. Also at this time spring lock detent or pivoted arm 23 which according to the form illustrated in Figs; ,1-5 is struck out of the sheet metal jacket 2! is out of the cooperating opening or keeperII of the barrel and ,the alined notches 2%! of the bearing I 8. Specifically the spaced kerfs 2c are formed in the jacket after which the lower por tion of resilient detent 23 is provided with the reflexed nose portion 25 which when the cap C be removed from jacket 2|, automatically retracts outwardly to unlock from the barrel or shell I8 and consequently the latter may be rotated upon manipulation of the knob K. V v
If the cap C be mounted on the jacket 25 and moved downwardly (Fig. 4) it actuates the overhanging nose or cam portion 25 of the locking detent '23, causing the latter to be deflected inwardly; thereby entering keeper or opening II of the barrel I8; thus removably interlocking the latter to prevent its rotation. By this action the lipstick carrying cup when in its lowest positlon is prevented from being accidentally raised. The cap C may be said to operate the spring cantilever detent 2-3 and has a friction fit with the jacket; In addition the reactive thrust on the part of the detent 25 against the cap C when the latter is fully on the jacket forms supplementary means to preclude accidental removal therefrom from the jacket.
Once the cap C is removed from the jacket, cam 25 automatically and resiliently snaps out of the socket or opening II of the barrel 5 and .1
clear of the sleeve I8. The barrel is now unlocked and knob K may again be rotated to lift stick L seated on pin I5 out of the barrel.
To facilitate proper assembly of the retaining jacket 2| on the cam slotted sleeve I8, spaced indents 25 and 27 are provided at the upper part of the jacket and a single detent 28 is provid'ed at the lower part of the jacket. The ind'ent's 26 and 21 in fact are projections extending inwardly of the body of the jacket while the detent 28 projects outwardly of the jacket as shown. Indent or projection 26 and the indent or projection 28 are in vertical alinement.
In this matter of assembly, if the cam slotted sleeve or bearing I8 be mounted on the barrel S, the jacket 2| may be quickly lined up with sleeve It by first arranging the alined projections 26 and 28 in line with the vertical slot I9 of the sleeve and thereafter sliding jacket ZI over the sleeve I8 which becomes compressed although the upper projection '26 snaps between the walls of slot 'or gap I9 of the sleeve (Fig. 4A) to interlock the latter with the jacket to preclude accidental rotation of the jacket relative to the sleeve. As a further means to preclude slippage of the jacket 2i relative to cap I8, the indent or projection 2] asis well understood frictionally cooper es with the cap C to retain it in place and against the band B.
By the present invention the lipstick L cannot be accidentally projected out of the holder when the cap is mounted on the jacket nor can the cap be accidentally withdrawn. Thus the possibility of the cap falling ofi the holder is materially reduced. Consequently accidental projection of the lipstick out of the holder isavoided.
In the form according to Figs, ii to 9 inclusive the spring detent 23' is a separate member and not formed out of the body of the jacket 2|. After the jacket ZI is assembled on the sleeve or bearing I8, the shank 301 of the spring detent 23 is inserted between the walls of slot I9f through the lower openin 3| inthe jaekctgI' (Fig. 9) until it meets the stop bead I? (Fig. 6) Projection or indent 26f aids to hold shank 36 in place and shank 3t also is disposed within slot I9 and interlocks with the walls of the latter to prevent rotation of the sleeve I8. The reflexed nose 25' of detent 23 normally projects outside of the jacket 2I and isfree of theopen ing or keeper II of the barrel or shell S and the opening 33 in the cup I4. Thus the barrel is unlocked and the cup is free to be displaced upwardly. Knob K may therefore be turned for slid-ably and rotatably displacing the cup If however the cap C be mounted on the jacket 2 I Q, the nose 25' of the resilient detent 23' is defiected inwardly to interlock with the wall of keeper or opening II of the barrel S and with the wall of opening 33 in thecup. With nose 25 inter+ locked with opening II, the barrel S is locked against rotation. Hence the cup I4 cannot be actuated and at this time the cup is also trapped by the nose 25' against upward displacement.

In Figs; 10 and 11, shell or barrel 8% has its keeper or opening Il adjacent the bead I2 and locking detent 23 is struck out of but integrally merged with the lower part jacket 2I and has its no'se 25 at the upper part thereof and receivable in notches 253 and immediately awaiting to be actuated by the cap C for interlocking with the opening II of the rotatable barrel S In'Figs. 10 and 11, projections 26 and 28 are directly impressed on the shank of detent 23. Projection 26 interlocks with the walls of slot I9 of the sleeve I'S to prevent rotation of the latter relative to the jacket 2 I and projection 28 frictionally cooperates with the cap C to preclude accidental dislodgement of the latter. In other aspects the species illustrated in Figs. 10 and 1-1 is along the lines of Figs. 1-5.
In the form according to Figs. 12 and 13 the spring detent 23 forms no part of the jacket 2H and the shankthereof is inserted into opening l at the upper end of the jacket and has it lower and seated on the knob or flange K. The nose or ofiset portion 25 normally is free of the keeper or opening H' of the barrel S and hence the knob K may be rotated for elevating or lowering cup M and in its most lowered position within the barrel, the latter is locked against rotation immediately after the cap C is mounted on the jacket 2| thus deflecting the nose 25 inwardly to removably interlock with the wall of opening li It follows that the cup M cannot be actuated or displaced in that it is interlocked with the locked barrel S In other aspects the form illustrated in Figs. 12 and 13 is substantially along the lines of the form illustrated in Figs. 10 and 11.
In the preferred embodiment illustrated in Figs. 14 to 17 inclusive, the keeper or opening or aperture I I is in the barrel S and is rectangular for removably interlocking with the nose or cam portion 25 of the spring detent 23 which is interposed between the spaced sides of the gap or slot 19 of the cam slotted bearing I8 The lower end of the shank of the detent 23 is provided with an outwardly extending lug removably received in and interlocked with the walls of the notch M in the annular fixed retaining band B and the alined notch 52 in the jacket 2i Lug 50 is also cammed or sprung therein and into the elongated slot or opening i l of the rotatable barrel S when the cap 0 is mounted on the jacket 2 l and moved downwardly. Thus the barrel S is locked immediately after the cap C is applied to the retaining jacket ZI tending from the jacket frictionally cooperates with the cap C to preclude accidental removal therefrom. In other aspects the form illustrated in Figs. 14 to 17 is substantially along the lines of the form shown in Figs. 12 and 13 although in the matter of assembling of the embodiment according to Figs. 14 to 17, the detent 23 is posi tioned in the gap l9 after the sleeve or bearing I8 is mounted on the barrel S Thereafter the jacket 2 l is mounted on the bearing I8 so that opening 53 lines up with nose 25 and subsequently the jacket is moved downwardly permitting the side walls of the alined notches M and 52 to straddle the lug 50 about the time nose 25 is received and snaps into the opening 53 In all the embodiments disclosed, the rotatable barrel is locked against rotation after the cap is mounted on the jacket and moved downwardly therealong and by this action the lipstick carrying cup is thus held in its lowermost position against upward vertical displacement. Or in other words, in all the embodiments disclosed locking of the barrel or shell against rotation due to the action of the spring locking detent when actuated by the cap, takes place when the lipstick seat or pin is at the lower part of the cam slot in the sleeve or bearing. It follows that the knob cannot be accidentally rotated for effecting displacement of the lipstick out of the jacket when Detent or projection 54 ex- 6 the cap is mounted on the latter, thus avoiding the possibility of needlessly staining or coloring on the part of the lipstick.
Unless the cup is at its lowest part of the barrel S, that is, unless projection as [6 is at the pre-- determined lowest part of the cam slot of the bearing, the cap C cannot be fully closed, namely, to reach the fixed annular band B. It is only when the seat or pin I6 is at the lowest part of the cam slot that the keeper means or aperture as H becomes in alinement or registration with opening 53 of the jacket to permit reception of the reflexed nose portion of the spring locking detent. Otherwise the refiexed portion acts as a stop preventing the cap to be shifted there beyond. This is true of all of the embodiments disclosed.
Various changes may be made in details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof inherent therein.
I claim:
1. In a holder, a cup having means for retaining a lipstick and having projecting means, a rotatable barrel surrounding said cup and having keeper means and including means movably guiding said projecting means vertically of said barrel, a bearing surrounding and rotatably guiding said barrel and including a spiral slot having walls severally cooperating with said projecting means upon rotation of said barrel relative to said bearing for displacing said cup and including spaced sides defining an elongated gap, a jacket closely surrounding said bearing and embodying an opening, a spring detent having a shank within said jacket and mounted within said gap and having a reflexed portion normally projecting at least in part through said opening to outwardly overhang said jacket, means to prevent rotation of said jacket relative to said bearing, and a cap removably mounted on said jacket and having means for actuating said reflexed portion into said opening and into said keeper means to preclude rotation of said barrel relative to said jacket.
In a holder, a cup having means for sustaining a lipstick and comprising projecting means, a rotatable barrel surrounding said cup and having keeper means and including means movably guiding said projecting means vertically of said barrel, a bearing surrounding and rotatably uiding said barrel and including a spiral slot having walls severally cooperating with said projecting means upon rotation of said barrel relative to said bearing for displacing said cup and including spaced sides defining an elongated gap, a jacket closely surrounding said bearing and embodying an opening and a notch, a spring detent having a shank within said jacket and mounted within said gap and having a reflexed portion normally projecting at least in part through said opening to outwardly overhang said jacket and having outwardly projecting means extending into said notch to preclude rotation of said jacket relative to said bearing, and a cap removably mounted on said jacket and having means for actuating said reflexed portion into said opening and into said keeper means when said first-mentioned projecting means is at the lower part of said slot to preclude rotation of said barrel rela-' tive to said jacket.
3. In a holder, a cup having a seat for sustaining a lipstick and comprising terminal means overhanging said cup, a rotatable barrel surround ing said cup and having keeper means and including means movably guiding said terminal means vertically of said barrel, a bearing sur rounding and rotatably guiding said barrel and including a spiral slot having walls severally operating with said terminal means upon rotation of said barrel relative to 'said bearing for displacing said cup and including spaced sides defining an elongated gap, a jacket closely surrounding said bearing and embodying an opening at the upper part thereof and a notch at the lower part thereof, a spring detent having a shank with in said acket and mounted within said ga and having a reflexed portion at its upper end and normally pro ecting at least in part through said opening to outwardly overhang said jacket and having at its lower end outwardly proj cting means extending into said notch to preclude rotation of said jacket relative to said bearing, and a cap removably mounted on said jacket and having means for actuating said refleked portion into said opening and into said keeper means when said terminal means is at the lower part of said slot to preclude rotation of said barrel relative to said jacket.
4. In a holder, a cup having a seat for sustai'n ing a lipstick and comprising terminal means overhanging said cup, a rotatable barrel surrounding said cup and having keeper means and including means movably guiding said terminal means vertically of said barrel, a bearing surrounding and rotatably guiding said barrel and including a spiral slot having walls severally cooperating with said terminal means upon rotation of said barrel relative to said bearing for displacing said cup and including spaced sides defining an elongated gap, a jacket closely sur rounding said bearing and embodying an opening at the upper part thereof and a notch at the lower part thereof, a spring detent having a shank within said jacket and mounted within said gap and having a reflexed portion at its upper end and normally projecting at least in part through said opening to outwardly overhang said jacket and having at its lower end outwardly projecting means extending into said notch to preclude rotation of said jacket relative to said bearing, retaining means surrounding said jacket and interlocking with said outwardly projecting means, and a cap removably mounted on said jacket and having means for actuating said refiexed portion into said opening and into said keeper means when said terminal means is at the lower part of said slot to preclude rotation of said barrel relative to said jacket.
5. In a holder, a cup having a pin for sustaining a lipstick and comprising terminal means overhanging said cup, a rotatable barrel surrounding said cup and having keeper means and including means movably guiding said terminal means vertically of said barrel and including at its lower end a knob, a bearing surrounding and rotatably guiding said barrel and including a spiral slot having walls severally cooperating with said terminal means upon rotation of said barrel relative to said bearing for displacing said cup and including spaced sides defining an elongated ga a jacket closely surrounding said bearing and embodying a notch at the lower part thereof and embodying an opening at the upper part thereof and adapted to register with said keeper means when said seat is at the bottom part of said slot, a spring detent having a shank within said jacket and mounted within said gap and having a refiexed portion at its upper end and normally (iii projecting at least in part through said opening to outwardly overhang said jacket and having at its lower end outwardly projecting means seated onlsaid knob and extending into said notch to preclude rotation of said jacket relative to said bearing, and a cap removably mounted on said jacket and having means for actuating said refiexed portion into said opening and into said keeper means when said terminal means is at the lower part of said slot to preclude rotation of said barrel relative to said jacket.
6. In a holder, a cup having a pin for sustaining a lipstick and having terminal means overhanging said cup, a rotatable barrel surrounding said cup and having keeper means and including means movably guiding said terminal means vertically of said barrel and including at its lower end a inanipulatable knob, a bearing surrounding and rotatably guiding said barrel and including a spiral slot having walls severally cooperating with said terminal means upon rotation of said barrel relative to said bearing for displacing said cup and including spaced sides defining an elongated gap, a jacket closely surrounding said bearing and embodying a notch at the lower part thereof and embodying an opening at the upper part thereof and adapted to register with said keeper means when said terminal means is at the bottom part oi? said slot, a spring detent having a rectilinear shank free of and within said jacket and mounted within said gap and having a reflexed portion at its upper end and normally projecting at least in part through said opening to outwardly overhang said jacket and having at its lower end outwardly projecting means seated on the upper part of said knob and extending into said notch to preclude rotation of said jacket relative to said bearing, retaining means having means interlocking with said outwardly projecting means and seated on said knob and surrounding said jacket, and a cap removably mounted on said jacket and having means for actuating said reflexed portion into said opening and into said keeper means when said terminal means is at the lower part of said slot to preclude rotation of said barrel relative to said jacket.
7. In a holder, a cup having means for sustaining a lipstick and inciuding projecting means, a barrel surrounding said cup and having keeper means and including means movably guiding said projecting means, a hearing about and rotatably guiding said barrel and including a spiral slot having walls severally cooperating with said projecting means for displacing said cup and including spaced sides defining an eIQngated gap, a jacket closely surrounding said bearing and including an opening, and spring locking means having a shank mounted inside of and concealed by said jacket and disposed within said gap and having a reflexed portion in part accessible out side of said opening and overhanging said jacket.
8. In a holder, a cup having means for sustaining a lipstick and including projecting means, a barrel surrounding said cup and having keeper means and including means movably guiding said projecting means, a bearing about and rotatably guiding said barrel and including a spiral slot having walls severally cooperating with said projecting means for displacing said cup and including spaced sides, defining an elongated gap, a jacket closely surrounding saidbearing and including 'an opening, spring locking means having a shank mounted inside of and concealed by said jacket and disposed Within said gap and having a 'refleked portion in part accessible outside of said opening and overhanging said jacket, and a cap removably mounted on said jacket and having means for actuating said reflexed portion into said keeper means to preclude rotation of said barrel relative to said jacket.
9. The holder according to claim 8 wherein said reiiexed portion is in alinement with said keeper means but out of the latter when the cap is removed from the jacket.
10. The holder according to claim 9 characterized in that the locking means is displaced in a direction within the jacket to enter the keeper means when the cap is slidably moved downwardly along the jacket to prevent rotation of the barrel at a time when said projecting means is at the lower part of the spiral slot.
11. The holder according to claim '7 characterized further in that said keeper means is a vertical slot in which the spring locking means may be partly disposed and the jacket embodies a notch to retain a lug of the locking means.
12. The holder according to claim 11 wherein the notch is disposed at the lower part of the jacket and the walls thereof interlock with the lug to retain the spring locking means against upward vertical displacement.
13. The holder according to claim' '7 wherein said opening is adapted to be disposed in registration with said keeper means when said projecting means is at the lower part of said slot and the reflexed portion being normally out of said keeper means and partly projecting beyond said opening.
14. The holder according to claim 7 wherein the locking means is independent of the jacket but is retained between the barrel and jacket and by the bearing.
15. The holder according to claim '7 wherein the jacket embodies means projecting into said gap for alining thereof relative to said bearing.
16. The holder according to claim '7 wherein said reflexed portion is projectible only into said keeper means when said projecting means is at the lowest part of said slot.
17. The holder according to claim 16 characterized in that said barrel limits inward displacement of said reflexed portion at a time when said keeper means is out of registration with said opening.
18. The holder according to claim 8 wherein said reflexed portion characterizes a stop to preclude complete mounting of said cap on the jacket at a time when said keeper means is out of registration with said opening.
19. A holder of the class described comprising a pair of telescoping relatively rotatable tubular members, a carrier within said members, cooperative means between said members and carrier for advancing and retracting said carrier coincident with the relative rotation of said members, a closure cap for telescoping over said members, an opening in the inner member independent of said advancing and retracting means, a locking latch carried by the outer member comprising a knee portion normally sprung outwardly of the outer surface of said inner member, a shell telescoping said members, said shell having an opening through which said knee portion of said latch protrudes outwardly beyond the outer surface thereof and in the path of the telescoping cap, whereby the latch is sprung inwardly of the members by engagement with said cap to enter said opening and interlock with the inner member and prevent relative rotation of said members when said closure cap is telescoped over said members.
20. A holder of the class described comprising a pair of telescoping relatively rotatable tubular members, a carrier within said members, cooperative means between said members and carrier for advancing and retracting said carrier coincident with the relative rotation of said members, a closure cap for telescoping over said members, an opening in the inner member independent of said advancing and retracting means, a separate locking latch having a shank and knee portion carried by the outer member, said knee portion being normally sprung outwardly of the outer surface of said inner member, a shell telescoping said members, an opening in said outer member in which the shank portion of said separate latch is located and held between said shell and inner member, said shell having an opening through which said knee portion of said latch protrudes outwardly beyond the outer surface thereof and in the path of the telescoping cap, whereby the latch is sprung inwardly of the members by engagement with said cap to enter said opening and interlock with the inner member and prevent relative rotation of said members when said closure cap is telesccped over said members.
21. In a holder, a cylindrical cup having an inside diametrically arranged pin for sustaining a lipstick and said pin having a part projecting outside of said cup, a rotatable cylindrical barrel surrounding said cup and having an aperture at the upper part thereof and including means independent of said aperture movably guiding said pin vertically of said barrel and including at its lower end an accessible knob, a cylindrical bearing surrounding and rotatably guiding said barrel and including a spiral slot having walls severally cooperating with said part upon rotation of said barrel relative to said bearing for vertically displacing said cup and including spaced vertically arranged sides defining an elongated gap disposed along the entire length of said bearing, a cylindrical jacket closely surrounding said bearing and embodying a notch at the lower part thereof and embodying an opening at the upper part thereof and adapted to register with said aperture only when said pin is at the bottom part of said. spiral slot, a spring detent having a rectilinear shank within said jacket and mounted within said gap and having an outwardly overhanging reflexed portion at its upper end and normally projecting at least in part through said opening to outwardly overhang said jacket and having at its lower end outwardly projecting means seated on said knob and extending into said notch to preclude rotation of said jacket relative to said bearing, and a cap removably mounted on said jacket and having means for actuating said reflexed portion into said opening and into said aperture when said pin is at the bottom part of said spiral slot to preclude rotation of said barrel relative to said jacket.
