4 Claims. (Cl. 137-69) This invention relates to improvements in detachable dispensing faucets for liquid containers of various kinds.
Many liquid products are commercially distributed in large cans, such as gallon and ilve gallon cans, and in other forms of containers. Such containers are usually provided in a wall thereof with a screw-threaded or non-screwthreaded pouring neck or similar form of spout or opening which, with respect to the filled container, is initially closed by a vremovable cap, stopper, plug or other form of closure, which must be removed when it is desired to discharge liquid from the container.
Pouring of liquid from containers of the kind above referred to, through the pouring neck, spout or opening thereof, is an awkward operation, especially when the container is of large size or bulky, and frequently involves waste and loss of the liquid by reason of uncontrolled ilow, spillage and like occurrences. To obviate such inconvenience and loss, when dispensing liquid from such containers, detachable faucets have been heretofore provided which are adapted to be connected with the container pouring neck, spout or opening. Such faucets must usually be provided with a coupling connection which conforms to the particular style and size of pouring neck, spout or opening possessed by a given container desired to be served thereby. By reason of this, a considerable number of styles and sizes of faucets and their coupling connections are necessary if itis desired to accommodate a variety of styles and sizes of containers.
Having the above circumstances in view, it is the purpose of this invention to provide an improved detachable dispensing faucet which, by reason of the novel characteristics of the coupling connection means with which it is provided, may be quickly and easily operatively engaged with a variety of styles and comparatively wide range of sizes of container pouring necks, spouts or openings.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a container showing a novel detachable dispensing faucet according to this invention as operatively coupled thereto in connection with the pouring neck thereof; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1, but drawn on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 3l is a transverse vertical sectional view, taken on line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the reference character 5 indicates a container, an end wall 6 of which is provided with a pouring neck I, which may be initially closed by a suitable removable stopper or closure means (not shown). After the pouring neck 1 is opened by removal of said stopper or closure means, the novel detachable dispensing faucet of this invention can be assembled with and in secured operative relation to the pouring neck 1. A
The novel detachable dispensing faucet according to this invention comprises a base plate l which is preferably provided with a rearwardly projecting peripheral ange 9. Afllxed to and extending through and outwardly from said base plate 8 is a faucet spout III, the inner end portion of which is flared to provide a valve seat II. Cooperative with the valve seat II is a valve member I2. The valve member I2 is provided with a push stem I3 which extends outwardly. through the interior of the faucet spout I0, to project through and exteriorly from the wall of the latter and through a tubular slideway or guide element Il which is amxed to. said wall. Ailixed to the outer end of the push stem I3 isa push button or finger piece I5. The valve member I2 is yieldably closed upon the valve seat II by the thrust of a compression spring I6 which is mounted around the external portion of the -push stem I3, between the slideway or guide element I 4 and the push button or finger piece I5.
Also affixed to the base plate 8, to open outwardly thereof, is a vacuum breaker or air admission tube I'I. This tube I1 projects inwardly from the base plate 8 as at I'I'. and is then suitably bent to extend upwardly through the interior of the container 5,*when the faucet is operatively attached to the pouring neck l, so as to terminate within the upper level of the container relative to the lower level thereof from which the attached faucet extends when the container is disposed in position to discharge its liquid content through the faucet. The upper or free end of said tube I'I is provided with an outwardly opening ball-check valve I8, which is operative to prevent entrance of the liquid content of the container into the tube I1 but which permits discharge of air from' the tube into thecontainer interior with vacuum breaking effect when the valve member I2 is opened for outflow of liquid through the faucet. v
The means for operatively attaching the faucet to the pouring neck 'I of the container 5, in a prises a supporting member I9 which is affixed to the base plate 9 to extend throughand outwardly therefrom. Said supporting member I9 is provided with an endwise open bore 20 which is preferably of polygonal cross-sectional shape. and which provides a slideway in which is mounted a draw-bar 2| of corresponding cross sectional shape. This draw-bar 2| is non-rotatably supported by the member I9 subject to axial sliding movements therein relative to the base plate 9 and parallel to the pouring neck 1 of the container when the faucet is attached to the latter. The draw-bar 2| is provided at its outer end with a screw-threaded extension 22 w ch is adapted to project exteriorly from the outer end of the supporting member I9. Threaded onto the extension 22 is a knurled nut piece 23 which bears and thrusts against the outer extremity of the supporting member I9. At its inner end, the draw-bar 2l is provided with an angularly proiecting fulcrum piece 24. Pivotally mounted on the end of the fulcrum lug 24, by an attachment screw or other suitable pivoting and attaching means 25, is a clamp-bar 29 having oppositely extending arms 21 and 29. The clamp-bar 29 is biased by a torsion spring 29 to turn about its pivot in clockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 2. Mounted on the inward extension I1 of the vacuum breaker or air admission tube I1 is an abutment lug 90 which is opposed to the arm 29 of the clamp-:bar 29.
Supported upon the inner side or face of the base plate 9 is a sealing gasket 9|, which may be made of any suitable resilient and liquid impervious material, such e. g. as rubber.
To condition the detachable dispensing faucet, characterized as above described, for attachment to a container, the nut-piece 23 is manipulated to move inwardly the screw-threaded extension 22 of the draw-bar 2|, thereby sliding the latter axially inward through the supporting member I9. Such inward movement of the draw-bar 2| moves the clamp-bar 26 away from the base plate 9, and carries the arm 29 of said clamp-bar into arrested engagement with the stationary abutment lug 99, whereafter continued inward movement of the draw-bar and clamp-bar causes, through the arrested arm 29, a counter clockwise rotation of the clamp-bar about its pivotal connection with the draw-bar, whereby the clampbar is swung toward a parallel disposition relative to the axis of the faucet (see dotted position of the clamp-bar shown in Fig. 2).
After the clamp-bar 29 is initially disposed as above described, the same, together with the vacuum breaker or air admission tube I1, can be inserted through the open pouring neck 1 of the container until the base-plate 9 with its sealing gasket 9| abuts and bridges over the outer end of said pouring neck. When the faucet is thus applied to the pouring neck 1 and properlyA disposed in desired service relation, the nut-piece 29 is manipulated to move outwardly the screwthreaded extension 22 of the draw-bar 2|, thus drawing the latter outwardly through the supporting member I9, and thereby moving the clamp-bar 26 away from the abutment lug 99 toward the container wall E. As the clamp-bar is carried away from the abutment lug 99, the spring 29 becomes operative to rotate the clampbar clockwise to a position transverse to the axis of the pouring neck 1 and the faucet, whereafter continued movement of the clamp-bar toward the container wall 6 finally brings the former into engagement with the inner face of the latter and into bridging relation to the opening of the pouring neck 1 (see full line showing in Figs. 2 and 3). By turning the nut-piece 29 strongly home against the end of the supporting member I9, the clamp-bar 29 is caused to nrmly grip and thrust against the container wall 9 so asto draw the base plate 9 and its sealing gasket 9| into tightly bound engagement with the outer end of the pouring neck in leak-proof joint forming relation thereto, and at the same time securely coupling the faucet in its operative attached relation to the pouring neck.
It will be understood that by reversing the above described operations the faucet can be readily detached from the container.
From the above it will be obvious that the novel dispensing faucet of this invention is well adapted, within reasonable limits, for operative attachment to a variety of different styles and sizes of container pouring necks and other forms of container discharge openings.
Having now described my invention, I claim:

A detachable dispensing faucet comprising a base plate provided with sealing means on its inner face and having a valved faucet spout projecting exteriorly therefrom, an endwise open supporting member also projecting exteriorly from the base plate perpendicular to the plane thereof, a non-rotatable draw-bar slidably mounted in said supporting member, said drawbar having a screw-threaded extension at its outer end, a nut-piece on said extension adapted to bear against the outer end of said supporting member, said nut-piece being manipulatable to A move said draw-bar. a clamp-bar pivotally sup ported in connection with the inner end of the draw-bar, means to bias the clamp-bar to a transversely disposed relation to the draw-bar, and a stationary abutment lug adapted to be engaged by the clamp-bar when the latter is carried inwardly by the draw-bar whereby to rotate the clamp-bar toward a parallel relation to the draw-bar.
3. A detachable dispensing faucet comprising a base plate provided with sealing means on its inner face and having a valved faucet spout projecting exteriorly therefrom and an air admission tube projecting interiorly therefrom, a draw-bar means supported in connection with said base plate for longitudinal movements perpendicular to the plane thereof, means for moving the drawbar means, a clamp-bar pivotally supported in connection with the inner end of the draw-bar means, means to bias the clamp-bar to a transversely disposed relation to the draw-bar means, and a stationary abutment lug nxed on said air admission tube adapted to be engaged by the clamp-bar when the latter is carried inwardly to bear against the outer end of said supporting member, said nut-piece being manipulatable to move said draw-bar, a clamp-bar pivotally supported in connection with the inner end of the draw-bar, means to bias the clamp-bar to a transversely disposed relation to the draw-bar, and a stationary abutment lug xed on said air admission tube adapted to be engaged by the clamp-bar when the latter is carried inwardly by the draw-bar whereby to rotate the clamp-bar toward a parallel relation to the draw-bar.
