(ModeL) 'W'Z/zwJw. J6 fla W Ag: KQAMIQI UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
RICHARD MYERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOOK-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,053, dated January 10, 1882. Application filed June 9, 1879. Renewed November 19, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD W. MYERS, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookltacks; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
Like parts in the two figures are designated by similar letters of reference.
This invention appertains to certain improvements in book shelves or racks, the object of which is to facilitate its being taken apart and packed in a small com pass, ready for transportation or storage, and to provide a neat, strong, and cheap'rack or shelf; and to these ends they consist of the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A A mark four hollow standards arranged, two at each end, between shelves B and O, in a line with openings made in the shelves, through which openings and the hollow standards are passed screw-threaded rods D, which screw into the head-piecesE to firmly hold the parts together,
as clearly shown in Fig. 2. These rods have heads turned on their lower ends to hold the bottom shelf to the standards, or to serve as legs.
The head-pieces E may be made of any desired shape or configuration.
To lighten as well as to give a pleasing and artistic appearance to the rack, ornamental figures may be carved or sawed from the headpieces E, and also the hollow standards may be turned after any preferred design..
It is evident that by cutting the hollow standards in sections a rack or case having three or more shelves can be made.
I am aware that it is not new in a folding chair to provide the axial rod of the hinged legs with a sleeve to prevent the logs from being crowded inwardly.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
A rack or book-case consisting of two or more perforated shelves, hollow standards or columns, threaded tie-rods D, the heads of which form legs for the rack or case and support the lower shelf and turn into head-pieces E, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
RICHARD W. MYERS.
