Description

Sept. 19, 1950 M. c. FRIDOLPH 2,522,510
PANTY, GIRDLE, TRUNK, OR THE LIKE Filed Aug. 30, 1946 FIG. I.
INVENTOR. MAUDE C. FRIDOLPH BY 5W /MW1 WM ATTORNEYS.
Patented Sept. 19, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PANTY 'GIRDLE, TRUNK, 10R, THE-LIKE.
Maude Constance FridolplnLos Angeles, Calif. Application August- 30, 1946, Serial-No;- 693,865 4. Claims. (01. 2-43) This invention relates to a panty girdle or the like and more particularly to apparel of this character for: feminine wear.
It isanrobject of the present invention to provide an article of apparel of this class wherein an improved form fitting construction is obtained by inexpensive means.
A further object is to provide a construction wherein the rear quarter panels of the article are so associated with a central vertical seam as to provide contoured cups or semicups which conform to the buttocks contour.
Figure 1 is a rear view of a panty girdle incorporating an improved form of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the panty girdle on the wearer.
Referring now to the drawings, the improved panty girdle has a front section not shown which may be of conventional construction and is provided with right and left rear panels In and I2. These panels are joined by a central rear vertical seam M which extends down to the bottom of the panty to the crotch. The panels l and I2 are cut from flat pieces of material of the pattern indicated by dotted lines at [6 and I8 and may be formed from elastic material of either the twoway or one-way stretch or knit. The seam I4 is reinforced by the incorporation of a nonelastic tape 20 from the crotch at least up to a point 22 a few inches below the waistline, although, the tape reinforcement may extend all the way to the top if desired. From the point 22 down the remainder of the seam, the side panels are preferably gathered as indicated at 24 forming pleats although they may be provided with individual darts at these points.
This construction provides rear panels which are cup shaped or contoured to more closely fit the buttocks and permit them to assume a natural contour even though the girdle be of a tight fitting size. It serves to control separately each buttock and thigh muscle so that when the body is in motion, there is no counter-restriction on either muscle and the natural contour of the buttock line is preserved; the gathers being set into an inextensible center seam. that is, shirred into the seam, which does not stretch in the up and down direction at all. The panels themselves, however, are free to stretch over the buttocks contours and to assume a cup-like shape.
The result is a panty girdle or trunk which is far more comfortable to wear than one having flat back panels and, at the same time, gives better figure control and a more natural appearance.
I claim:
1. In a panty girdle or the like, the combination of right and left rear bottom panels cooperating with a front portion to form a tight fitting body encircling garment having a pair of leg open-- ingsat its lower end separated by a crotch por tionwhich. is connected tothe lower end: of said front portion, said panels being joined together by a central verticalse'am extending on the gar-*- ment from the crotch between said leg openings upwardly toward the waistline, said panels having pleats or gathers along said seam in the region of the buttocks, said pleats extending from said seam in a direction transversely of the seam, said pleats being dimensioned to form cup-like pockets adapted to snugly receive the buttocks, said central seam being inelastic in the longitudinal direction of said seam in at least the region of the crotch and the buttocks whereby said inelastic seam cooperates with said pleated panels to provide support for the body and to retain the but-- tocks in their natural contour.
2. In a panty girdle or the like, the combination of right and left rear bottom panels cooperating with a front portion to form a tight fitting body encircling garment having a pair of leg openings at its lower end separated by a crotch portion which is connected to the lower end of said front portion, said panels being joined together by a central vertical seam extending on the garment from the crotch between said leg openings upwardly toward the waistline, said panels having pleats or gathers along said scam in the region of the buttocks, said pleats extending from said seam in a direction transversely of the seam, said pleats being dimensioned to form cup-like pockets adapted to snugly receive the buttocks, said panels being formed of elastic material and said central seam being inelastic in the longitudinal direction from the crotch upwardly to at least a point located at the level of the upper portions of the buttocks.
3. In a panty girdle or the like, the combination of right and left rear bottom panels cooperating with a front portion to form a tight fitting body encircling garment having a pair of leg openings at its lower end, said panels being joined by a central vertical seam extending from the crotch between said leg openings upwardly toward the waistline, said panels having pleats or gathers along said seam to form cup-like pockets adapted to receive the buttocks, said gathers extending from a point a few inches below the waistline with increasing gather to substantially half way to the crotch and with decreasing gather to substantially the crotch, said central seam being inelastic in the longitudinal direction of said seam along the pleated portions of saidpanels and said panels being elastic in at leastaportion thereof whereby said inelastic seam cooperates with the pleated elastic panels to provide support for the body and permits the buttocks to assume their natural contour.
4. In a panty girdle or the like, the combination of right and left rear bottom panels cooperating with a front portion to form a tight fitting body encircling garment having a pair of leg openings at its lower end separated by a crotch portion which is connected to the lower end of said front portion, said panels being joined together by a central vertical seam extending on the garment from the crotch between said leg openings upwardly toward the waistline, said panels having pleats or gathers along said seam in the region of the buttocks, said pleats extending from said seam in a direction transversely of the seam, said pleats extending along the region of the buttocks with increasing gathers to the most fleshy portion of the buttocks andthen extend with decreasing gathers to form cup-like pockets adapted to snugly receive the buttocks, said central seam being inelastic in the longitudinal direction of said seam in at least the pleated portion thereof whereby said inelastic seam cooperates with said pleated panels to provide support for the body and to retain the buttocks in their natural contour.
