2 Claims.
In Patent No. 1,773,614 is shown essential parts that are chiefly a combination of lugs positioned at the forward corners, and in the center of a razor seat or saddle; said lugs in conjunction with a razor hood or cap attached to the said seat as is also shown in Patent No. 1,773,614, maintain a razor blade in predetermined position for the shaving operation respective of a safety razor guard forming part of the razor seat, as described and explained therein.
The novel features of my invention are embodied in a new original and improved structure of lugs, which in their combination respective of alignment and positions, elevate the razor blade /64 of one inch, approximate, above the razor seat. Said novel structure of lugs also projects the blade forward from the position attained by prior invention, said projection of the blade being described and explained in detail, further; and
the safety element appurtenant of the razor guard on this general type of safety razor remains therewith.
The mechanical improvement that such a novel structure of lugs engenders is the desired result of entirely eliminating whole or partial contiguity of the blade edge, with the razor seat or saddle, itself. Hence the utmost precision for the shaving or cutting process, is consummated therein, as can be produced with this type of razor blade and razor.
The following is a clear and concise explanation and description of the form of my invention, with reference being had to the accompanying illustrations.
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a safety razor seat and a single edge blade, with a part of each broken away and showing my invention as embodied on a type of razor somewhat like that as illustrated in Patent No. 1,773,614. The blade is shown in its position as determined by the lugs; and a part of a razor hood or cap is shown.
Figure 2 is a view, taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1 and shows a blade affixed in the superior position that is attained with my novel structure of lugs, in their combination, the lugs being shown as they are constructed in accordance with my present invention. A cross-section view of a razor hood or cover, in open position, is also shown.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a safety razor and clearly shows the combined features of the novel structure of lugs that is the form of my present invention.
Figure 4 illustrates the type of blade used, being commonly known as the single edge type and having various trade names as the Gem, Probak or Marlin.
In further detail the essential parts in their relation to the whole of my invention are designated by numerals as illustrated on the accompanying drawing, with a clear and concise. explanation briefly describing each numeral there- Certain parts of this general type of safety razor'pertinent to my form of invention are described in the Dalkowitz Patent No. 1,773,614 and would include the safety razor seat or saddle ll), of Figure 2, adapted to receive a recessed blade as 6, and provided with blade engaging means or stops, and a razor seat being formed at its front or shaving edge, with a toothed razor guard 5. Additional parts that are also pertinent to my present form of invention, and included in the aforesaid Letters Patent being a razor handle 8, attached to the said seat with a control member carried by said handle means operable by the said handle whereby a razor hood or cover ll, shown in an open position in Figure 2, and by means of a pivotal attachment l6, clamps on the blade. The blade being advanced against stops on the front corners of the razor saddle into the determined shaving position, is simultaneously clamped secure by the aforesaid razor cover.
In Figure 4 are shown features of the type of blade to be employed with this type of razor and, as also illustrated in Letters Patent No. 1,77 3,614 and in the Behrman Patent No. 1,739,280 with a reinforcement 15 at the rear edge of the said blade, slots or recesses at the side edges, and a slot or aperture 9, in the center of the blade itself and transverse to the direction of the shaving edge of the blade, b.
In Figure l the blade 5 is shown placed in position on lug 2, said lug 2 being attached to the razor seat l0. As shown, the blade 6 is fitted easily by means of the aperture 9 at the center of the blade, over the lug I, onto the top surface or shoulder 2" of lug 2.
The features of my present invention with respect to the novel structure of lug l and lug 2 can more readily be understood, with reference being had to Figure 3, wherein lug 2 is a circular lug being three sixteenths of one inch in its diameter, attached to the razor seat or saddle l0, centrally from the side edges of the said seat. The distance the front face of lug 2 is from the front of the razor guard 5, conforms approximately to the measure taken on the shaving edge I) of the blade and the front end of the blade aperture 9. This distance is illustrated as letter d in Figure 1 and Figure 4. Shown also in Figure 3 is how the lug 2 is provided a depth of elevation, as approximately /64 of one inch from the shoulder 2" of said lug to the razor seat l0, itself, and acts as a base for the oblong lug I.
Lug l of Figure 1 takes a generally elliptical or oblon form, with the major axis or diameter equalling the diameter of the circular base lug 2, as three-sixteenths of one inch, and extending transversely of the blade seat It]; i. e., the direction of the major axis of lug l is at right angles to the line of the razor guard 5. The opening and closing action of the razor cover I! is designated by the line of c of Figure 3, the said action being clearly explained and illustrated in the Dalkowitz Patent No. 1,773,614, whereby the clamping operation of the aforesaid cover Ii, results in advancin the cutting edge of the blade 6, against abutments or blade stops, said blade being then afiixed in position for the shaving operation. With occurrence of aforesaid clamping or closing action by the razor cover. the novel structure of lugs as embodied in my present invention functions as a mechanical improvement on prior forms of abutments, or razor stops. Such a novel structure of front lugs as applied to the safety razor seat H), are lug and lug 3" of Figure 3, being angular in construction, with the angle of recess or vortex of each lug elevated /64 of one inch, i. e., five sixtyfourths of one inch, approximately above said seat. The vortex of lug 3 and the vortex of lug 3" are aligned in the same vertical plane that the front edge of the razor guard, 5, is in; and said angles of recess, or the vertices of said lugs are aligned with the shoulder 2" of lug 2, being in the same horizontal plane that said shoulder 2" is in, respective of the razor seat, iii.
Letter a of Figure 2 represents the height above the razor seat 10, that lugs 3 and 3", in combination with lug 2 elevate the blade 6, said height of elevation being approximately /64 of one inch, i. e., five-sixty-fourths of one inch. Lug 4 of Figure 2 maintains the reinforced rear edge 15, of said blade in a level condition in combination with lugs 2, 3 and lug 3". Lugs 4 and 4"of Figure 3 are in themselves part of the razor seat 10, at the opposite corners, at the rear edge of said seat and are adequately of one inch in elevation or thickness, on said seat, sufficient thickness to maintain the blade in a level condition with the elevating lugs 2, 3, and lug 3". The level condition of the blade 6, is illustrated in Figure 2. Lug ii and lu i" have no special form other than the aforesaid elevation on the razor seat and are chiefly utility members, in their relation to said elevating and projecting lugs I, 2, and 3, and lug 3".
The position of the blade edge bof Figure 1,
is the projection of the blade 6 by lug I and lug 2 of said blade edge being aligned with the front of the razor guard 5, and being afiixed in this said position for a shaving operation by the closing or clamping action of the razor cover, II.
The projection of the blade 6, in conjunction with the elevation of said blade at a, of Figure 2, with the blade being aiiixed in this position of elevation and projection results in the present form of my invention. The desired result is that whole or partial contiguity, or contact, by the blade edge with the razor seat itself is eliminated and utmost precision and keenness for shaving operations is attained thereby.
It is obvious that in accordance with the aforesaid details of specification the double edge type of blade as is also used with this general type of razor can be adapted proficiently to a razor that embodies the essential parts and aforesaid structure of lugs, as is my present invention.
It will thus be seen that my device forms a mechanical improvement on previous structure of safety razors and does not depart from the factors of this general type of razor as are esteemed for simplicity in manufacture and use, and its features can be readily comprehended by those who are skilled in the art and manufacture of razors. In operation the device renders utmost precision for a shaving operation by the elevation and projection of the blade accorded by the embodied lugs; being neat and efficient in the fixture of the blade on the lugs in conjunction with the clamping action of the cover.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. Ina pivoted cap razor having a rectangular blade seat with a guard formed. at the forward edge, a centrally located blade aligning lug on said seat and blade stops at the forward corners of said seat; blade elevation means comprising support lugs formed at the rear corners of said seat, shoulders formed on the blade stops above the razor seat and a shoulder formed on said blade aligning lug, the shoulders and support lugs being in the approximate same plane above the razor seat, whereby a blade placed on said seat would be supported above the rectangular seat.
2. In a pivoted cap razor having a rectangular blade seat with a guard formed at the forward edge adapted for shaving with standard blades, a blade elevation means comprising support lugs formed at the rear corners of said seat, shoulders formed on blade stops at the forward corners of said seat and a shoulder formed on a blade align- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in. the file of this patent:
