Description

P. L. MATER March 27, 1951 Filed Deo. 22, 1948 INVENTOR. m? L Merz/ Patented Mar. 27, 1951 UNHTED STATES FENT G FFCE 3 Claims.
ylhis invention relates to new and improved combs and more specifically to those which are particularly adapted for cleaning the hair and for removing dust, dandruff, etc. therefrom.
The principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a double comb, i. e., one having two separable parts with similar complementary teeth which are constructed to provide conjoining recesses on the side surfaces thereof, such recesses receiving dust, dandruii, etc. from the hair as the comb is drawn through the same and the recesses receiving the material both from a mechanical scraping action and by reason of the attraction of static electricity of the comb as it is drawn through the hair, said attraction acting on loose particles therein to attract the same into the recesses.
Further objects of the invention reside in the provision of a comb as above described and in a particular new and useful manner oi securing the combs together for use in combination., said means also providing for quick and easy separation of the two parts of the comb for cleaning.
Other objects and advantages o1" the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of a comb according to the present invention, part being broken away and in section;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line 2-2 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 1, parts being broken away and showing the comb locking means in unlocked condition;
Fig. 4 an enlarged section on line ffl-ll of Fig. 2;
Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are sections similar to Fig. i but shoving modifications of the tooth structure; f
Fig. 9 is an end view of the comb showing the locking means therefor, part being broken away, and
Fig. 10 is a section similar to Fig. 2 showing a modification, part being removed.
The present invention provides three main parts, two of which are complementary comb sections generally indicated at it and i2 and the third one being a locking means therefor, generally indicated at it.
The part lil is elongated and U-shaped in cross section, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and it is provided with a pivot pin or the like i@ by which it is pivoted to the comb section it. However, at the end thereof adjacent the pivot pin l the U-shaped locking means ll is solid, as indicated at it and the entire locking device Ill is pivotable from the locked condition of Fig. l to the unlocked condition of Fig. 3. In Fig. l, the U-shaped locking device it snaps down over the backs of both of the combs, holding them together by conventional snap means indicated at 2c. These snap means comprise small protuberances and corresponding dents, so that the two comb parts snap into mutually latched relation.
The comb section I2 is cut out as at 22 to accommodate the solid portion l@ of the locking device lli.
The separate teeth and 2o of the sections i2 and it, respectively, are similar out reversed, as
icwn in Fig. and at their lateral edges are provided with out away portions 2S which together forni dust and dandruii collecting pockets or receptacles. The line 3i! indicates the dividing line between the two combs and when the saine are separated, they open on the line 3i? providing for extremely quick and easy cleaning of the detritus receiving pockets or receptacles, which will be seen not to have any inaccessible or hard to get at portions but to be located on bevels as indicated at 28, so that the cleaning section may be extremely simple and quick, as for instance, merely by rinsing.
Figs. 5, 6, 'l and 8 also show outlines of teeth which may be used and it is to be understood that although this showing is illustrative, it is not conclusive and any other similar formations useful to the purpose come within the limits of the invention.
For instance, in Fig. 5, the teeth 32 are cut away from their outer edges 3s; in Fig. S the recesses are formed by symmetrical concavities 3. However, in all cases the dividing line Sil is shown centrally of the combined teeth and the reduced portions of the teeth conjoin to form the pockets for receiving the dandruii, etc.
It will be seen that this invention provides a very easily cleaned comb for quickly and easily cleaning dust, dandrui and the like from the hair; and the comb appears very similar to any ordinary comb but in reality is considerably dii ferent and is easily taken apart and put back to-` gether again for the indicated usage.
Fig. l0 shows a modication wherein the teeth iii and s2 appear just like those at 2liin Fig. l, but from the edges they are cut all the way through at the contacting edges equivalent to the edges at 36, leaving thin spaced teeth te, :it which meet at 13 and leave a relatively large detritus hole or receptacle 59 therebetween.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not Wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. A comb comprising a pair of solid toothed comb parts, means temporarily securing the comb parts together with the teeth of each part flatly and solidly contacting corresponding teeth of the other part to form single solid combined operating teeth, and each tooth being reduced in thickness adjacent the line of contact with the correspending tooth thereof, forming combined lateral recesses at side surfaces of the combined teeth.
2. A dandru comb comprising a pair of solid separable toothed comb parts, arranged in side by side relation with the teeth of each comb part flatly and solidly contacting the corresponding teeth of the other comb part, each tooth having a reduced portion substantially the length thereof at the surface contacting the corresponding tooth of the other comb part to form dust and dan- REFERENCES CITED The following references are 'of record in the ile of this patent:
