This invention relates to dolls, and more particularly to a mechanical'doll having provisions, arrangements and. mechanism for simulation in the doll of the going-'to-sleep, awakening and accompanying sounds and movement of the limbs and with substantially the same effects and currences as with a natural live infant.
The special objects and advantages to be attained will be hereinafter more fully explained in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrative of a practical but non-limiting embodiment of the inventiomin which:

The pivotal mounting of the lever member 24, at the designated place 25, may be accomplished in any desired manner. For a certain purpose in the present invention, it is preferably mounted as indicated more clearly in Figure 2, wherein the pivot 25 comprises a headed stud on which the member 24 is swiveled, and between the member 24 and the base portion of the stud 25 there is provided a spring element 30 surrounding the stud and pressing the member 24 normally against the head at the outer end of the stud. By this provision, not only is an up-and-down rocking movement permitted of the lever, but the latter is also capable of a limited torsional and lateral movement on the stud 25, as will be later end portion of the lever member 24 is controlled and operated in a manner to be now described.
Mounted freely rotatable on a stud member 3| extending laterally from the base member or supporting plate 26 is a wheel 32 having peripheral ratchet teeth, said wheel 32 carrying a pinion 33 which meshes with a larger gear wheel 34 mounted freely rotatable on a stud 35 projecting laterally irom the base member or supporting plate 26. In operation, the wheel 32, through its atth wheel 34 and the supporting and lifting pin provision, controls the operation of the lever 34 is provided on one of its side faces with a pin 36 on which the adjacent end portion of the lever mem- 24 is held normally in contact with said pin 36 by a spring element 31 connecting the opposite end portion of said lever member 24 with an adjacent wall portion of the doll body and more specifically stated, as shown, the spring connection between the lever member 24 and the doll body is in the region of the neck portion of the body (see Fig. 1). Thus, with the adjacent end portion of the member 24 held in contact upon the pin 33 by the spring element 31, when the wheel 34 in the particular position and arrangement shown moves clockwise and thereby causes the pin 36 to travel in a circular path, this end portion of the lever member follows downwardly upon the pin 36 until the opposite end portion of the lever member ment of the eyelids 24 causes an opening movel6. At a certain time during the gear wheel 34, the eyelids i6 have moved to a fully opened position,
.whereupon the rocking movement of the lever member 24 ceases for the time being and the conthe gear wheel 34 carries the pin 26 away fromthe adjacent end portion of the lever arm 24 until the pin 36 has reached a diametrically opposite position. Special controlling and operating means for the driving wheel 32 and its pinion 33 is provided in accordance with the present invention, and this feature is an important feature. Any suitable provision and arrangement for imparting a step-by-step or intermittent movement of the driving wheel 32 may be provided, but, in any case, it is preferable that such provision and arrangement be made whereby the actuation of the driving wheel 32 may be effected by moving the doll body either lengthwise or transversely, as will presently more fully appear.
As shown, a part of the means for actuating the driving wheel 32 comprises a ratchet element, designated generally by the numeral 38, and operated by a longitudinally swingable pendulum element 39. A somewhat similar ratchet element 40, operated by a transversely swingable pendulum element 4!, is also provided in addition to said parts 38 and 39.
The elements 38 and 39 are shown more clearly in Figure 4, while the elements 40 and 4| appear more clearly in Figure 5. As shown, the ratchet element 38 is pivotally mounted, as at 42, on the base member or supporting plate 26, and the ratchet member 40 is similarly mounted on said member 26, as at 43. The elements 38 and 40 are each yieldably held against a stop lug or pin 49 by a spring 50.
The member 38, as shown in Figure 4, comprises a substantially rectangular body plate 54 carrying at one end portion a pivotally mounted pawl 55 which normally engages the peripheral ratchet teeth on the drive whee1 32. The pawl 55 is held normally against a stop projection or shoulder 56 provided on the adjacent end portion of the plate member 54 by a spring element 51, the particular provision and arrangement being such that the pawls 55, in engagement with the peripheral teeth of the wheel 32, causes a partial rotation of the wheel when either the ratchet element 38 or 40 is rocked in one direction on its pivot 42 or 43, while the spring elements 5'! permit either pawl 55 to move with escapement efiect on the peripheral teeth of the wheel 32 when the ratchet element is rocked in the opposite direction. This provision and arrangement permits the wheel 32 to be moved in one direction, but prevents movement in the opposite direction. So, too, in this connection, to prevent reverse rotation of the drive wheel 32 when the ratchet element 33 is moved in the direction to again engage the wheel for the feeding of the same, the spring-pressed dog 48 is provided on the base member or supporting plate 26 to normally engage the peripheral teeth on the driving wheel 32. The ratchet element 38 is held in normal position against a stop stud 49 by a spring element 50 which urges said element toward and against said stud 49. The opposite end portion of the ratchet element 38 is provided with a lateral cam projection 5| which is beveled at its end and engaged by a correspondingly beveled cam portion 52 on the adjacent end portion of the pendulum element 39. With the constructional provisions and arrangements thus far described, it is here noted that if the doll body is swayed or rocked either longi tudinally or transversely when held in the arms or placed in a cradle or rocking chair or the like,
.the dolls eyes will be caused to close and open at intervals in simulation of substantially the same effect as in the handling of a natural and live-infant. Other essential features of the invention will now be described.
'.In the illustrated construction and arrange- 'm'ent as thus far described, it is here pointed out,
in'partic'ular, that while the driven gear wheel 35 rotates in a clockwise direction, the driving wheel 32. and its attached pinion 33 are obviously caused to rotate in a counter-clockwise direction by operation of the respective ratchet elements 38 and '45. The stressed mention of this particulaw direction of rotation of the driven gear wheel 34 is because the same has a material operating effect upon certain additional essential features of the device.
As shown, a conventional sound-producing eleiment 6| is provided within the body portion IQ of thedoll. This device, which may be of any approved form and character, is to produce, controllably, different characters of sounds varying from a mild sound or whimper to a loud and vocif-= erous cry in simulation of such in real life as :an'infant awakes either gradually orsuddenly.
As indicated more or -less conventionally and schematically in the drawings, the sound-producing'device is of the bellows type. As shown, it is suitably positioned and mounted on an adjacent wall portion of the body I ii of the doll, within the hollow thereof and adjacent the aforesaid and hereinafter described operating and controlling "mechanism, said sound-producing element 65- having a rod element '62 attached at one end thereto,-while the other end of the rod 62 is provided with a substantially hinged and compensating attachment to an end extension 55 of the aforesaid lever member 25, as at 64.

As-shown'more clearlyin Figure 3; the motor It comprises an annular housing in which there is located a spring element H, the attachment of said spring elementv to the annular housing being'of the type whereby the end of the spring is substantially retained in working position, yet slippage rispermitted under forced winding of the spring to prevent overwinding of the same. That-is to say, the outer end portion of the spring element "H is formed sinuously or corrugated transversely, as at 12, and this peculiarly formed .end portion of the spring engages over .a hump or protrusion 73 on the inner peripheral 'face of the. housing (see Fig. 3).

"Through the medium of a suitable chain of gearing (not shown), the rotor or stair 15 of the motor is driven by a ratchet provision on the outside ofthe motor housing 10. This ratchet drivingiprovision is shown more clearly in. Figures :1 and 60f 'thedrawings, wherein it comprises a ratchet wheel l6 which is cooperatively connected tothe'internal gearing (not shown) for driving the rotor or staff 75 in one direction to wind the spring element 1|. In this connection, 7; it ish'ere"noted that the said internal gearing of the motor (not shown) includes also a ratio gear (not shown) which is in mesh with the peripheral teeth of the aforesaid gear 61 whereby the latter is rotated constantly so that the facial stud or studs 69 on said gear 61 intermittently engage the cam surface I65 on the free end portion of said tripper element '65 which in turn pushes the adjacent end portion of said lever member 24 off the supporting pin 36 on said driven gear 34, thereby permitting the lever 24 10 to drop suddenly and actuate the sounding device 6| so as to cause a loud cry.
For operating the ratchet wheel 16 to wind the spring of the motor, an operating lever is pivotally mounted so as to be rockable freely on the shaft of said ratchet wheel 16, said operating lever I! being yieldably held in normal position against a stud member 18 by a spring element 19. A shorter end portion of said operating lever 11 carries a spring-pressed pawl 80 20 which normally engages the peripheral ratchet teeth on the wheel 15. A longer end portion of said'operating lever 11 is extended to overlap the side face of said driven gear 34 opposite to that on which the aforesaid pin 36 is provided, said driven gear 34, on said face which is overlapped by the operating lever 11, being provided with at least one pin 8|, but, preferably, a plurality of such pins in annularly spaced relation to each other. By this particular provision and arrangement, as the gear wheel 34 rotates in its clockwise direction, said pin or pins 8| intermittently strike said operating lever 11 and cause an actuation of the same to in turn cause a partial rotation of said ratchet wheel 16. This actuation 35 of the ratchet wheel 16 causes a winding action on the spring element H of the motor at frequent intervals, and, as hereinabove stated, the particular provision of the outer end portion of the spring for sequential engagement of the same with the spring barrel or housing of the motor prevents overwinding of the spring. In this connection, it is here also noted that the prevention of overwinding may be attained in various manners other than that specifically shown. As shown in Figure 3, there is provided only one hump or protuberance 13 on the spring barrel and there are only a limited number of the undulations or transverse corrugations 12 provided in the end portion of the spring. Obviously, however, in some cases, only one undulation or corrugation 12 may be provided in the spring end portion and a series of the humps or protuberances 73 may be provided on the spring barrel. So, too, in other cases the interengaging provision between the spring barrel and th end portion of the spring may be made continuous throughout the circular extent of the spring barrel.
As the invention is thus far described, it is clearly apparent that the doll can be placed in the simulation of sleep by swinging or rocking the body either endwise or transversely or alternately in either direction. Moreover, such rocking serves to wind the motor 19 as previously 55 described which drives the gear 61 continuously. Thus, after the eyes have been made to appear as closed in sleep, the doll may be left alone so that, upon the timed operation of the controlling mechanism or mechanisms so far described, an 7 automatic opening of the eyes is accomplished, and in which latter instance, by the provision for effecting the sudden and rapid movement of the operating lever 24, the sounding device 6| is made to give forth a loud and vociferous crying sound rather than a slow and murmuring or whimpering sound. The latter effect is attained by deliberately manipulating the body of the doll to continue rotation of the gear 34 and a consequent lowering of the adjacent end portion of the lever member 24, which effect is attained with different degrees of rapidity depending on the speed in which the body of the doll is swayed or rocked either endwise or transversely.
In addition to the aforesaid explained features of the present invention, provision is mad for moving the arms and legs of the doll upon the attainment of the awakening effect. For this purpose, as herein first described, the limbs of the doll are made so as to be movable at least to a certain degree. As shown, cords, wires or other flexible elements 82 are extended into the hollow leg members of the doll and attached to the foot portions, as at 83. These flexible elements 82 are carried through guides 84 located adjacent the knee joints of the legs, thence through apertures 85 in the body portion In in the region where the legs are attached thereto, and then through suitable guide elements 86, whence the two leg flexible elements 82 are joined to a rockable element 8! which is pivotally mounted, as on a shaft 88, on the base member or supporting plate 26. Similarly, flexible members 89 are attached at their outer ends, as at 99, to the hand portions of the arms [4, thence through guides 9|, apertures 92, where the arms join the doll body In, then through guides 93, from which guides the inner ends of the flexible members 89 are attached to said rockable member 81. Obviously, as said rockable member 81 is swung in either direction, the flexible elements 82 and the corresponding elements 89 are alternately drawn tightly in one direction and loosened in the opposite direction, which alternate action causes a corresponding alternate movement of the legs and arms of the doll. In this connection, it is noted that if the oscillation of the rockable member 81 is comparatively slow, the movement of the doll limbs is correspondingly slow, whereas, if the oscillation of the rockable member 81 is rapid, the limbs accordingly move with corresponding rapidity.
To effect oscillation of the rockable member 81, the same is connected by link element or pitman 94 to a crank wheel 95, which latter is pivotally mounted, as at 96, on the base member or supporting plate 26. This crank wheel 95 is provided on its periphery with ratchet teeth which are engaged by a ratchet toothed rack bar I96, which latter is pivotally mounted, as at 91, at one end on the lever member 24. The lower end portion of said rack bar l96 is provided with the ratchet teeth, which end portion is normally held in engagement with the periphery of the crank wheel 95 by a spring element 98, said spring element holding the rack bar normally in engagement with the wheel 95 so as to effect at least a partial rotation of the wheel 95 upon a downward movement of the adjacent end portion of said lever member 24. However, it is preferable to have the ratchet teeth on the rack bar extended for a considerable distance longitudinally of the bar so as to give a full rotation of the wheel 95 or possibly a multiple rotation thereof during the downward movement of the rack bar. As the crank wheel 95 is thus rotated, the link or pitman connection 94 between the wheel and the rocker element 81 effects an oscillatory movement of said element 81. Of course, if the downward movement of the rack bar 96 is comparatively slow, the oscillation of the rocker element 81 is correspondingly slow, but if the downward movement of the rack bar 96 is sudden and rapid, the crank wheel 95 is accordingly rotated rapidly and imparts a rapid motion to the rocker element 81. This rapid operation of the crank wheel 95 occurs when the awakening effect-of the doll occurs suddenly under the mechanical controlling and operating means, thus causing a simulated outcry of the doll and at the same time causing the legs and arms to kick or move rapidly.
It is here noted that the rockable element, indicated generally by the numeral 87, may be of any suitable and approved construction and arrangement. As indicated more clearly in Figure 7 of the drawings, it comprises a transverse rockshaft 88 supported rotatably in a boss I provided on the base member or supporting plate 26 (see Fig. 2) and having a relatively short leverarm to which the pitman link 94 is pivotally attached (see Fig. 7). This rock-shaft 88 has an upturned arm I02 at one end, to which arm the ends of one each of the leg and arm operating cords 82 and 89 are attached. The other end of the shaft 88 has a downturned arm I03 to which the two others of the cords 82 and 89 are attached (see Figs. 2 and 7). This is one practical provision and arrangement. As above stated, the same may be varied in different adaptations of the invention.
It is here further noted that the rack-bar I96 may be movably held and guided by a clip element I04 of any suitabl kind and mounted on the base member or supporting plate 26.
From the foregoing it is apparent that a doll is produced which can be handled and made to simulate the true characteristics of a living infant, thereby making dolls more interesting and teaching and indicating to a child the care and attention in simulation to that of a living infant.
Obviously, while the illustration exemplifies a practiced embodiment of the invention, it is understood that considerable modification is contemplated as to the general structure as well as the details thereof. The invention, therefore, is not limited to the specific construction and arrangement shown.
What is claimed is:
1. A simulative sleeping doll comprising a body having a head provided with openable and closable eyelids, mechanism within the body for moving the eyelids to opened and closed position by a back-and-forth movement imparted to the body either longitudinally or laterally thereof, said mechanism including two weighted pendulum elements swinging in planes at right angles to each other and each operating a separate ratchet mechanism to effect rotation of a single controlling wheel, said wheel carrying a supporting member traveling thereon in a circular path, a lever member having an operative connection with the eyelids for effecting a closing movement of the eyelids in one direction and an opening movement of the same when operated in the opposite direction, said lever member resting normally on said supporting member of the controlling wheel whereby to be lowered during a part of the rotation of said wheel and lifted during the rest of its rotation, timed mechanism for displacing said lever member from said supporting member on th controlling wheel during the time of closed position of the eyelids, a spring motor for operating said timed mechanism, the spring of the motor being intermittently wound by a co.-
' trol wheel, a lever rockably 10 operative provision between the same and the controlling wheel.
2. The doll construction and arrangement as set forth in claim 1, wherein the doll body is provided with a sound-producing element therein and cooperatively connected to said lever member whereby to produce a relatively slow murmuring sound during the opening movement of the eyelids when the lever element is supported on said supporting member of the controlling wheel but produces a louder sound upon the sudden displacement of said lever member from said supporting member on the controlling wheel.
3. A simulative sleeping doll construction and arrangement as set forth in claim 1, wherein the doll body is provided with a sound=producing element therein, the same being operatively connected with the lever whereby to produce a relatively slow murmuring sound during the opening movement of the eyelids while the lever arm is supported on said supporting member of the controlling wheel, but produces a louder sound upon the sudden displacement of said lever member from said supporting member on the controlling wheel, and connected means Within the body and limb portions of the doll for moving the limbs with slow agitation during the opening of the eyelids under the control of said controlling wheel but moving the limbs with quicker agitation when said lever member is suddenly displaced from the supporting member on said controlling wheel.
4. A simulative sleeping doll comprising a body having a head provided with openable and closable eyelids, a controlling wheel disposed within said body and rotatably supported therein, means connected to said controlling wheel and actuable in response to a back and forth movement imparted to said body either longitudinally or laterally thereof for effecting the rotation of said consupported intermediate its ends within said body and having one end operatively connected to said eyelids for effecting a closing movement of the latter upon rocking movement of said lever in one direction and an opening movement of the same upon rocking movement of said lever in the opposite direction, a supporting member carried by a face of said control wheel and engageable with said lever for effecting the rocking movement of the latter in timed sequence during a rotational cycle of said control wheel, timed mechanism operatively connected to said lever for displacing the latter from engagement with said supporting member during the time of the closed position of said eyelids, a spring motor operatively connected to said timed mechanism for operating the latter, and means operatively connecting said spring motor to said controlling Wheel for intermittently winding the former in response to the rotational movement of the latter.
