1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to compacts and particularly to an illuminated compact.
The main object of this invention is to provide an illuminated compact whereby the face of the user may be illuminated when using the compact, or the device may be employed as a safeguard for pedestrians.
I accomplish this and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specification as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the device when being used as a compact.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the device.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken along the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section taken along the line 4-4 in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section taken along the line 5--5 in Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the door actuating hinge.
Similar numbers of reference refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing, there is shown a somewhat rectangular frame I8 having a rectangular recess II formed therein provided n with a false bottom I2, the space I3 beneath Which can be used for any desired purpose by merely lifting out the false bottom I2 and its marginal sides I4.
The second recess I5, cylindrical in form, is disposed within the frame I 0 and receives the dry cell I6 which registers with the base I'I of the electric lamp I8 lwhose electrode I9 is in alignment with the central electrode 20 of the cell I6. A spring 2| is interposed between the base I'I and the cell I6 and urges the electrodes I9 and 20 apart.
The cell IS is slidably held Within the recess I5 by means of the threaded cap 22 having mounted therein a button 23 having the enlarged head 24 which engages the end of the cell I6.
Cgi
Pressure on the button 23 slides the cell I6 I within the recess I5 engaging the electrodes I9 and 20, thereby energizing the lamp I8 through the spring 2 I.
There is formed in the framel an inclined surface 25 against which is placed a reflector 26 which is substantially at 45 degrees with relation to the axis of the cell I6 and lamp I8. Directly in front of the reflector 26 is disposed a light conductor 2'I preferably of clear material on the outer edges of which are disposed the red translucent coatings 28 and 29.
It can be seen that the light from the lamp I8 will be reected by the member 26 and directed as a beam along the line indicated by the arrow 30 to the face 3| of the user.
Hinged to the frame I0 by means of the hinges 32 and springs 33 is a door or cover 34. On the inner side is mounted the mirror 35 and a suitable catch 36 may be employed without departing from the spirit of this invention.
It can be seen from the foregoing that this device is not merely a means for facilitating the application of cosmetics, but also affords an appreciable measure of protection if carried in the hand, since some of the light is disbursed in the form of a red band by passing through the translucent coatings 28 and 39.
l' am aware that numerous forms of compacts have been made in the past and in some instances they have been equipped with means for illuminating the mirrors thereof, the light therefrom being directed against the face of the user. It is to overcome the objections to such devices that I have produced the compact above described.
I claim:
A compact of elongated rectangular form, one
'Along side constituting the back, a mirror cover hinged along said back, said compact having a rectangular recess formed along the front thereof, a light conducting element mounted along Vone short side of said compact having a reflecting mirror at the rear end thereof, the front corner of said element being rounded, the top,
bottom and right hand edges of said element having red translucent covering, a flash light mount- Ved along the interior of the compact having its operating button projecting from the other short side of the compact and having its bulb facing said mirror, the mirror forming an angle of approximately with relation to the axis of the light conducting element whereby light rays from said ilash light Iwill pass along said conducting element and be diverged from the rounded end thereof.
MM EARL RUSH.
