WATCH REGULATOR. No. 257,511. Patented May 9,1882.

V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD OLIVER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WATCH-REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,511, dated May 9, 1882.
Application filed December 30, 188i. (Xo model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD OLIVER, oi the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Regulators for Watches and Clocks, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the ordinary watch-regulator the tension of the hair-spring is varied by a lever connected with one end thereof, which lever may be moved over the surface of a scale, but is under no limitation or control, except so far as the skill of the operator may enable him to moveit the requisite distance. Various screw contrivances have been made with the object of moving the regulator-lever more steadily than can be done by hand. They have, however, generally been subject to the objection that they were so contrived that variations in temperature would cause a. movement of the regulator-lever.
The object of my invention is to produce an exceedingly delicate regulator, and one by which the movement of the operator is very greatly reduced in its effect upon the regulator-lever, and also a regulator which is not affected by changes of temperature.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters refer to similar parts. These drawings show my regulator in two positions.
A represents the regulator-lever, provided with indicator-point G, which travels over a scale upon the moving quadrant orarc 13. The regulator-lever A is pivoted at H in the usual way. The quadrant B is pivoted at G. This quadrant is moved by a pinion-wheel, E, gearing into a rack cut on its circumference. This pinion-wheel E has a head arranged to be seized by a key, and may also be provided with slots for a screw-driver. The regulatorlever is provided with a slot, F, in which apin, D, traverses, said pin being fast to the quadant 1-3. This pin should travel snugly within the slot, so as to avoid alllost motion between the regulator-lever and the quadrant. The operation of the apparatus will be easily understood from the drawings. The pinion E being rotated, the quadrant B is moved and the regulator-lever is correspondingly adjusted. This regulator-lever, however, is moved to a much less distance than the are E, the delicacy of the adjustment being determined by the distance between the center O and the pin 1) relatively to the distance between the center O and the rack on the outside of the quadrant. The farther the center 0 is from the center II the more delicate will the adjustment be, and by a slight variation in the position of the parts any required degree of adjustment can be read ily obtained.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of the slotted regulatorlever A, quznlrant-rack B. provided with pin 1), operating in the slot F, and pinion-wheel ll, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with theregulatonlever, ot' a toothed quadrant, over which said lever extends, a bearing for the lever upon the quad-.- rant near the pivot ot' the latter, and a pinion gearing with the quadrant, substantiallyas set forth.
RIOHD. OLIVER.
