FENCING TOOL Filed April 2, 1948 lNVENTOR CARROLL V. QAVIS Patented Dec. 11, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FENCING TOOL Carroll V. Davis, Holabird, S. Dak.
Application April 2, 1948, Serial No. 18,521
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in fencing tools.
An object of this invention is to repair, replace, and remove fencing in an improved manner and by improved means.
Another object of this invention is to apply all of the appurtenances necessary for replacing and repairing fences as well as installing fences originall in a single unit.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simplified device of the character to be described which incorporates many appurtenances contiguous to installing and repairin fences.
Ancillary objects and features of novelty will become apparent to those skilled in the art in following the description of a preferred form of the invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 and in the direction. of the arrows, and;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of certain details of construction, and
Figure 5 is a plan view of a part of the device.
Viewing the accompanying drawings it will be seen that two arms are supplied and I2 respectively. Each arm has an electrically insulating grip element 14 thereon and said arm Ill has a prier extension it associated therewith with a reduced end to serve the purpose of not only a prier but also a screw driver in case of such requirement.
The opposite end of the said arm in is bifurcated at I8 and has a pivot pin extending therethrough. A curved and tapered prong 24 is integral with the said arm l6 adjacent the bifurcations and serves the purpose of a complemental portion of a staple and tack puller.
The said arm l2 has a reduced portion 26 and a pair of claws 28 at the end thereof. or course, the claws serve their usual function of pulling and holding fence cables as well as other purposes to which they might be subjected.
A prong 38 both curved and tapering is integral with the said arm l2 adjacent the reduced portion 26 and cooperates with the said prong 24 in order to form the tack and staple puller.
A groove 32 is formed in the said reduced portion 26 in order to seat a cutter blade 34 therein. This cutter blade has a cutout or notch 36 therein adapted to encircle said pivot pin 20.
A channel 38 extends transversely of the bifurcated end of the said arm l0 and is positioned between the said prongs 24 and 3D. This channel 38 is adapted to seat wire therein for cutting purposes, which wire is actually sheared by means of the blade 34 upon pivotal movement of the arms 10 and I2 relative to each other. A part of the arm l0 defining one wall of the channel 38 constitutes a handle for the blade 34. Serrations 40 and 42 respectively are supplied on the said arms In and i2 in order to supply a firm gripping area for wire or the like. Also, a wear resistant plate 44 is supplied integral the said arm 12 and serves the purpose of a hammering tool as also the purpose of providing a fulcrum in performing certain manipulations on wires in fencing.
From the foregoing it is seen that a tool of utility is described and illustrated, it being virtually all that is necessary for tightening, applying, removing and adjusting fencing Wires.
Due to the extreme simplicity achieved by the present invention a further description thereof is deemed unnecessary. However, it is apparent that certain variations may be made without departing from the spirit thereof. Accordingly, limitation is sought only in accordance with the scope of the following claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A wire cutter comprising a first arm having a base portion with furcations, the base portion connecting the furcations to said arm at one end thereof, a channel in one surface of said base portion, said channel extending transversely of said base portion and said arm, a second arm pivoted to the base portion of the first arm and having a reduced portion seated between the furcations of said first arm, said base portion having a slot which opens into said channel, a cutter blade secured to said reduced portion and extending through said slot, said blade projecting within said channel and arranged to cooperate with a wall of said channel to cut a wire which may be located in the channel.
