Description
Feb. 5, 1952 F. THOMAS FAUCET ATTACHED LAUNDRY SPRAY Filed Jan. 6, 1950 Fmmk Thamw 11V VEN TOR.
Patented Feb. 5, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,584,943 Y 1 FAUCET ATTACHED LAUNDRY SPRAY Frank Thomas, Weirton, W. Va. Application January 6, 1950, Serial No. 137,142 (01. 299-450) I A 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in spray devices and more particularly to a spray for use in sprinkling clothes prior to ironing the same.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a spray device of this character embodying a hose for attaching to the faucet of a laundry tub, kitchen sink or the like leading to 'a nozzle provided with a trigger controlled valve to conveniently control the discharge of water from the nozzle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel adjustable nozzle tip for regulating the spray discharged therefrom.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, emcient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, ease to attach to a faucet and which is otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view;
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the nozzle; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan view thereof.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purposes of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a hollow handle having an externally threaded nipple 6 at its rear end to which one end of a hose 1 is attached by means of a conventional type of hose coupling 8 whilethe other end of the hose is also provided with a hose coupling 9 for attaching to a faucet ID of a kitchen sink l I, or to a faucet of a laundry tub or the like.
The front end of handle 5 is formed with a downwardly extending neck 12 in which a nozzle head I3 is threaded by means of a nipple M at the inner end of the nozzle head. The inner end of nipple I4 is formed with a valve seat 15 closed by a washer l6 of a valve ll.
. Valve i1 is provided with a stem [8 having a socket l9 at its upper end which is slidably positioned in a chamber 20" in the upper front portion of handle 5. A coil spring 2| is held in socket l9 by means of a threaded plug 22 in the upper end of chamber 20 to hold the valve ll in its closed position.
' Valve I? is opened by means of an arm 23 rockably supported at its central portion on a transverse pin 24 in handle 5 and with the front end of arm 23 engaged in an opening 25 in valve stem [8. The rear end of arm 23 is formed with a slot 26 receiving a lateral pin 21 on the upper end of a plunger 28 which projects downwardly through the lower edge of handle 5 and provided with a packing 29. The lower end of plunger 28 is pivoted to the front end of a trigger 30 which is pivoted on a pin 3| at the lower edge of handle 5 and with the rear end of the trigger extending longitudinally under the handle.
A fixed spray valve 32 is formed at the lower end of a stem 33 supported in a spider 34 in nozzle head 13, the spray valve 32 projecting downwardly below the head l3 and engaging a tapering valve seat 35 at the inside of a nozzle tip 36. The valve seat 35 is surrounded by a rearwardly projecting ring 3'! threadedin an annular groove 38 at the lower end of nozzle head l3.
The outer edge of nozzle tip 36 is formed with a rearwardly curved lip 39 having an internal annular channel 40 in which a sealing ring 4| is positioned to fit closely around the lower end of nozzle head [3.
In the operation of the device the hose 1 is attached to a faucet Hi and handle 5 gripped by the hand of a person and trigger 30 squeezed to open valve ll whereby water is discharged through nozzle head l3 and tip 33, the tapering valve seat 35 for the outlet or orifice of the tip discharging the Water in the form of a spray.
A coarse or fine spray is produced by turning tip 36 on nozzle head [3 to move valve seat 35 toward or away from the stationary valve 32 and leakage around the tip 36 is prevented by the sealing ring 4| engaged in the annular channel 413 of the lip 39.
The spray may thus be used for conveniently spraying clothes before ironing the same.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A spraying device comprising a. hollow handle, a hose attached to the rear end of the handle for connection with a water supply, a nozzle head at the front end of the handle, a spray regulator including a fixed valve head in the nozzle head and a tip threaded on the head and having an orifice in which the valve head is seated, a sealing ring carried by the tip and surrounding the nozzle head, and a control valve in the handle.
2. An adjustable spray tip for a nozzle head comprising a fixed valve head in the nozzle head, said nozzle head having an annular groove in its outer end, a cap-like tip having a rearwardly projecting ring threaded in the groove, said tip having an orifice in which the valve head is seated, and an internal sealing ring carried by the tip and surrounding the nozzle head.
3. An adjustable spray tip for a nozzle hea'd comprising a fixed valve head in the nozzle head,
said nozzle head having an annular groove in its outer end, a cap-like tip having a rearwardly projecting ring threaded in the groove, said tip having an orifice in which the valve head is seated, and said tip having an internal annular groove, and a sealing ring positioned in the groove in sealing engagement around the nozzle head.
