- This invention relates to a. lighting fixture .for projecting light rays throughout a limited area.

An object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture which is constructed and arranged to eliminate glare and to direct the light rays downwardly in an intensified beam throughout a limited area.

Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting xture in which the light beam spread is directed downwardly in the shape of a cone from the center of the light.

Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture including a housing for the light and an element removably mounted in the open lower end of the housing for confining vand directing the light rays downwardly throughout a limited area.

With the foregoing and other objects in View, reference is now made to the following specilication and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodimentI of the invention is illustrated.

Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through a lighting xture constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating the same mounted in position in a ceiling.

Fig. 2 is an underside view thereof.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the lighting iixture includes a cylindrical housing I which is adapted to be secured in fixed position in a ceiling structure indicated generally by the reference character C with the open lower end I I of the housing disposed flush with the ceiling line D. Secured to a plaster ring I2 in the ceiling structure is an angulated ring I3 through which the housing slidably protrudes .and to which it is ailixed by screws I4 extending through circumferentially spaced vertically arranged slots I5 in the housing with the ends of the screws anchored in said ring- The slots I5 permit of vertical adjustment of the housing for disposing the lower end thereof flush with the ceiling line D.

The housing Il) is formed with a top wall l 7 to which a lamp socket I8 is secured for supporting a lamp I9 in depending relation within the housing I0. In order to confine the light beam spread from the lamp I9 to a limited area located vertically below the lixture, a removable shield 2li is provided which is adapted to slidably and resiliently fit within the lower end of the housing. The shield 2D is of cylindrical formationconsisting of a peripheral wall 2l and a plurality of transversely extending walls which are centrally apertured to allow the light rays from the lamp to be directed downwardly therethrough in the 2 form of a cone; In the embodimentl illustrated', four transverse walls areV provided, namely a top wall 22, a lower wall 23 and two intermediate walls 24 and 25 which Walls are substantially equally spaced apart and are provided with central openings 26, 21, 28 and 29 respectively which progressively increase in size from the opening 26 in the uppermost wall to the opening 21 in the lower wall so as to provide a frusto-conical central opening in the shield 20 with the center of the light being located at the apex of a cone formed as a continuation of the frustoconical opening as indicated in broken lines E in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

The lower wall 23 is secured to the lower end of the peripheral wall 2| and extends outwardly therebeyond so as to cover the lower end 0f the housing III and plaster ring I2 and to extend a short distance over the ceiling line D to thereby provide a finished lower face for the lighting iixture, The shield 20 is adapted to be removed from the housing I0 in order to clean the iixture and to gain access to the lamp I9 for replacing the same. For this purpose, the peripheral wall 2l is provided with circumferentially spaced Vertically arranged bowed springs 3I which are riveted or otherwise secured at their upper ends to the outer face of the peripheral wall 2I and with the lower ends of said springsfree. The said springs are adapted to resiliently engage against the inner periphery of the housing I0 to frictionally retain the shield in position within the housing.

Constructed in this manner, there is provided a lighting fixture which is adapted to be installed in a ceiling structure for directing the light rays from the lamp downwardly through the fixture in the form of a cone with the illuminating element in the lamp located at the -apex of the cone. This provides a limited spread of the light rays in the form of a spot light with a clearly deiined or sharp outer edge surrounding the spot light.

What is claimed is:

1. In a lighting fixture, a housing having an open end, a light socket carried by said housing for supporting a lamp adjacent the other end of the housing, a tubular shield removably secured in said housing and extending inwardly from said open end, said shield having a plurality of spaced transversely extending walls formed with central openings, the openings in said walls progressively decreasing in size from the outer wall located at said open end to the innermost wall of said shield to thereby provide a frusto-conical opening in said shield to permit of light rays from the lamp being directed therethrough in the form of a cone with the apex of the cone located at the center of the lamp, and the outer wall of said shield having its outer peripheral portion extending outwardly in covering relation with the housing at said open end, and a plurality of circumferentially spaced spring clips carried by said shield and adapted to engage the housing for securing the shield in position therein.

2. In a lighting fixture, a housing having an open end, a light socket carried by said housing for supporting a lamp adjacent the other end of the housing, a shield removably secured in the lower end of said housing, said shield comprising l.;
