Description

March 11,. 1952 c. B. PAYNE GOLF CLUB HOLDING CLIP Filed Aug. 11, 1949 Inventor Car/0s a Paym Patented Mar. 11, 1952 "GOLF CLUB HOLDING CLIP Carlos B. Payne, San Antonio, .Tex., assignor of twenty per cent to Julius A. Bass, San An tonio, Tex.
Application August 11, 1949, Serial No. 109,733
'2 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a unique article holding clip and has reference in particular to a clip which is designed to be attached to the waistband of the users trousers or to a body encircling belt, said clip being especially, but not necessarily, designed and adapted to support a conventional golf club in an out-of-the-way :position.
Needless to say, I am aware that clips which are attachable to belts for article supporting purposes are not broadly new; that one would find U-shaped clips, for example, used on and in connection with key-ring chains, for supporting flash lights, umbrellas, key-rings, and so on. Oddly enough and despite the miscellaneous uses for inverted U-shaped belt clips, none has been perfected to conveniently support the headed end of a golf club. In such circumstances, I have evolved and produced a simple, practical and economical clip which will serve to accomplish the ends wanted and in which manufacturers and users will find their needs and requirements present and conveniently available.
In carrying out the principles of this invention, I provide a spring clip which preferably applies to the wearers belt and whose outer limb portion is fashioned with an angularly disposed resilient grip to embrace the handle portion of a golf club, whereby to support the golf club conveniently and with requisite nicety in an out-of-the-way position, whereby to enable the golfer to have both hands free for miscellaneous needs and purposes.
Other objectives, features and advantages will become evident from the following description.
and accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the sheet of drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a golf club ac commodating and holding clip constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention and showing the manner in which the same is advantageously used;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank of sheet material from which the novel clip and holder is fashioned.
The clip portion of the device, which may be said to be of inverted U-shaped form, is denoted by the numeral 5 and is of resilient sheet material and comprises a relatively long limb 6, a complemental shorter spaced parallel limb 1 and lateral flange H.
a connective bend 8. Limb 6 has an identation 9 which constitutes a friction detent. This detent presses against the belt B of the wearer. Incidentally, the clip may be applied, if desired, to the waistband WB of the wearers trousers T. The lower end portion of limb I has adiagonally disposed resilient channel-type grip l0 and a The flange is of such form and angularity that it facilitates feeding the shaft portion S of the golf club C into the grip ID. The flange may also be used as a fingerpiece to spread the grip to open position whereby to facilitate removing the club. The club is preferably put in the grip at the angle shown close to the head H.
My novel clip and holder combined, unitarily speaking, is fashioned from a single piece of material, such as commercial plastics, steel, aluminum, rubber or leather covered steel or whatever proves out to be most successful for intended purposes.
In practice, the clip portion 5 is of springy construction and is detachably and readily applicable to either the belt or waistband of the trousers where it will stay put. When thus applied it presents, at a convenient place and angle, a golf club. The shaft portion is secured in the channel grip with the head end of the club preferably up and with the shaft disposed at an angle of approximately 30 or 40 degrees. This will eliminate any possible swinging of the golf club and will enable it to be conveniently situated either close to the left or right hip of the wearer.
I deem it advisable, to enable the reader to better appreciate the true significance of the invention, to give a few examples of definite occasions when one might want to use my clip for supporting the golf club near at hand but outof-the-way. These occasions are: While lighting cigarettes, autographing, rummaging through pockets without having to hold club in crook of arm, assisting other golfers where two hands might be necessary, carrying occasional other items on the golf course where two hands are required, or in an instance where a golfer dismisses his caddy temporarily to hunt for a lost ball and such golfer wishes to carry two clubs with him for the next several anticipated golf shots. Numerous other uses for ridding ones self of a golf club for a few moments can and do arise.
Referring to the blank shown in Fig. 3, the main body portion, which is used to make the clip is denoted by the numeral 5 as already denoted.
Then the remainder of the elements are indicated or denoted by the same reference numerals or lead lines already employed and for this reason I need only add that the numerals I2 and I3 designate fold lines which define the aforementioned bend 8, that the score lines l4 and [5 are used to define the region which is bent to provide the aforementioned spring clip l0.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in the shape, size and arrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A combined belt clip and holder for the headed end of a single conventional-type golf club comprising a relatively broad inverted U- shaped resilient clip embodying an inward relatively long limb of a length appreciably greater than the width of the user's belt so that the lower end will project to a position below the lower edge of the belt in a manner to support and assist in distributing the weight and load imposed thereon when the golf club is being carried in the holder, and an outward short limb, said short limb terminating in a portion which is channelshaped in cross-section and said portion constituting a club shank cradling grip, the latter being at an oblique angle to the effective vertical position of the clip, the outer wall of said grip having a flaring lip adapted to pilot the stated shank into carrying position in said grip.
2. The structure specified in claim 1 wherein the obliquity of said grip is at an approximate angle to the horizontal, the upper end of the grip terminating flush with the adjacent edge portion of said inner and outer limbs and the lower end of said grip protruding below the lower end of the long limb.
