This invention relates to a combination book holder and pocket construction and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide an article of this kind which can be readily handled and which, when not in use, may be compacted for convenient placement in a pocket or other relatively small compartment.

It is also an object of the invention to provide an article of this kind including an inner 1amination free along adjacent marginal portions to allow for the ready and effective engagement therewith of a booklet such as a racing program.

A still further object of the invention is to provide an article of this kind which, in addition to a holding flap for a booklet, is provided with pockets for currency, tickets and the like whereby the same are readily available.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved holder for racing programs and the like whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order that our invention may be better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of an extended holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, and with the 010- i sure flap for one of the compartments in an open position;

Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1;

Figure 5 is a View in perspective of the holder as herein embodied having a booklet applied thereto;

Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5, but showing applied to the holder a booklet of another type; and

Figure 7 is a view in end elevation showing the holder folded or compacted for placement within a pocket or the like.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, A denotes an elongated rectangular lamination of desired dimensions and of leather or other pliable material possessing requisite strength. This lamination A is to be folded substantially midway its ends along a transverse line I, to provide two leaves 2 and 3, the leaf 3 being readily caused to overly either face of the leaf 2, as desired.

The inner face of the leaf 2, has imposed thereover an inner lamination B, comprising two overlying sheets 4 and 5, of leather or other suitable pliable material. The lamination B is of a length substantially co-extensive in length with the leaf 2 of the lamination A and extends from the outer end of the leaf 2, to a point closely adjacent to the line of fold I. The outer end marginal portion and one longitudinal marginal portion of the lamination B are secured to the adjacent end and longitudinal portions of the leaf 2 by the rows 6 of stitching which also secures the adjacent marginal portions of the sheets 4 and 5, of the lamination B. By this mounting of the lamination B upon the lamination A, the inner end margin of the lamination B and the second longitudinal margin is free so that the lamination B may be readily folded away from the lamination A, to allow the ready insertion between the laminations A and B, of a folder F, of a type as illustrated in Figure 5, or of the type of folder T, as illustrated in Figure 6. The folder F is of a type wherein the pages are bound along end marginal portions and when the folder is applied to the lamination B, such lamination extends between desired pages with the pages freely disposed lengthwise of the lamination A. The booklet T, as shown in Figure 6, has its pages bound along side margins so that when applied to the lamination B, the pages of the folder T are freely disposed across the lamination with the bound marginal portions of the pages of the folder T closely adjacent to a side or longitudinal margin of the lamination B. The folders F and T are of general types used in connection with racing programs although of course the invention is not to be limited in this respect.

The sheets 4 and 5 substantially midway of their ends are connected by a row I of stitching and the marginal portions of such sheets 4 and 5 at the inner or partially free end portion of the lamination B, are connected by the rows 8 of stitching. At opposite sides of the row i of stitching are pockets 9 and ID, the pocket 9 being open along the free marginal portion of the lamination B- to permit insertion within such pocket of an identification card or the like for exposure through the window opening ll over which is disposed a sheet l2, of suitable transparent material.

The pocket I 0 is closed along all of its marginal portions but the inner wall thereof as afforded 'by the sheet has struck out therefrom a relatively large flap 14, which has its free end disposed toward the inner or partially free end of the lamination B. This flap I4 constitutes a closure for the resultant opening I5, which is of a size to allowconvenient placing of tickets within the pocket ID or withdrawal therefrom of such tickets. The flap I4 is effectually held in closed position by the separable fastening elements 16 and H, the element 16 being suitably engaged with the portion of the sheet 4 constituting the inner or rear wall of the pocket I0, and the element H being carried by the outer or free end portion of the flap l4.

Overlying the major portion of the inner face of the leaf 3 of the lamination A and extending from the outer end of the leaf 3 to a point closely adjacent to the line of fold I, is a sheet N3, of leather or other desired pliable material. A 1ongitudinal marginal portion of the sheet I8 is secured to the leaf 3 by a row [9 of stitching and the'adjacent outer ends of the sheet 18 and leaf 3 are connected by the row 20 of stitching. At a relatively short distance inwardly of the inner end of the sheet l8, said sheet is secured to the leaf 3 by the transverse row 2| of stitching;

The portion defined by the rows, [9, 28 and 21 of stitching constitutes a pocket 22 open along one longitudinal margin so that said pocket 22 may readily be used for containing currency or the like.

The inner end of the sheet 18 has a portion 23 extending toward the folding line I and which is of a width approximating one half the width of.

the sheet 13 with one side margin of the extension 23 substantially flush with a side marginal portion of the leaf 3. The row is of stitching is extended across this side marginal portion of the extension to secure the same to the leaf 3 while the outer end marginal portion of the extension is secured by the row 24 of stitching to the leaf 3. The securement of the extension 23 to the leaf 3 results in a transversely disposed pocket 25, open at its inner end and at a point substantially at the transverse center of the lamination B. The pocket '25, conveniently holds a pencil or the like which can be readily applied or removed without in anyway interfering with an applied folder F or T.

From the foregoing it is believed to be readily apparent that a holder constructed in accordance with the present invention is particularly advantageous for use in connection with a racing program folder in view of the facility with which such program may be applied or removed from the holder with the other conveniences afforded by the article as a whole.

As the article as a whole is pliable and readily bendable, when desired and with the leaves 2 and 3 in overlying relation, the article, as illustrated in Figure 7, may be folded between the line of fold l and the outer ends of the leaves 2 and 3 to so compact the article to be so compacted as to be readily placed with a pocket or other relatively small compartment and thereby further facilitating the desirability of the article.

We claim:

As a new article of manufacture, a holder comprising an elongated rectangular sheet of a flexible material folded at its transverse center to provide two leaves of equal area, two sheets of the same material of a width and length slightly less than the width and length of one of the said two leaves, said two sheets being disposed in superposed relation upon the said one leaf and secured together therewith along one of their side and outer end edges, the outer of said sheets having its inner end edge and the adjacent half portion of its other side edge secured to the like end edge and side edge portion of the inner of said sheets, the outer of said sheets also being secured transversely from the inner terminal of the line of securement of the said adjacent half portion of its other side edge to the said inner sheet, the outer end portion of said outer sheet beyond the said transverse line of securement, together with the underlying portion of the said inner sheet, forming a side opening pocket, the outer wall of said pocket having an opening of substantial area and constituting a sight window for the exposure therethrough of an identification card or'the like, a transparent sheet covering said opening a flap out out from the center of the inner end portion of said outer sheet and constituting a closure for a pocket formed between that inner end'portion and the underlying portion of said inner sheet, and means for securing said flap in its closed position.
