This invention relates to .a novel adjustable stand lamp with a..switch.and a :handle to ad- .just thelampand also actuate theswitch.

With the use of the familar electric standing lamp, .and more particularly :the ordinary type of floor :lamp which includes :a standard having a bracket :arm adjustably mounted thereon and carrying the usual light bulb and lamp shade.

- and which .is. .:customarily placed alongside an easy chair used for reading purposes, it is well :known that when it is desired to adjust such .bulb and shade, especially by the occupant of such chair, the shade is generally grasped by "the hand making :the desired "adjustment. Furthermore, in grasping and :actuating the short chain :of :the pull-chain switch, often ,prowided on such a lamp, the shade .is frequently :touchedzby the hand. 'Such touching and handi-ling of the :shade quickly :mars :and soils the :same, which then :soon requires cleaning thereof .or even replacing the same by a new :one.

It is :an essential object of this invention, in its broad or comprehensive aspect, to provide a novel .control device for :an electric lamp of this kind, wherein this device includes means .arranged and positioned to be conveniently enagedby the handand-readily actuated for adjusting the lamp bulb and shadei-nto the'desired position, and without any need of grasping or soiling the shade.

A further object of this invention is to provide in such an electric standing lamp novel control means comprising an operating element that :is placed nearzthe lower part of the lamp :shade and "is thus readily grasped .by the hand of the-occupant of a chair adjacent said lamp, whereby to adjust the position of the lamp bulb and shade without handling the shade.

A more particular object of this invention is to :provide such a control device for use on a well known type of electric standing lamp which has its bulb-socket equipped with a pull-chain switch, and wherein this device comprises a handle arranged to engage such pull-chain, .and

:to be readily operated for actuating said chain and switch as well as ,for adjusting .said socket with itsbul-b and shade.

This invention is illustrated in the drawings in a few of its several slightly varying terms of construction, all of which are adapted .for use on a well known type of electric standing clamp, indicated in Fig. 1 in'the shapeof ca floor lamp 113 which includes the usual .form iof hollow standard or upright post I I that arises from a base 1.2 and is arranged to contain an electric conductor therein, as is indicated at 13 .in Rig. 1, in the usual well known manner. In the three forms as disclosed herein, as variously shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 8, each comprises my novel control device 14 which is arranged to 'be readily mounted upon such a lamp standard 1.2 and which can be conveniently. engaged by-the hand .for adjusting the lamp upon the standard.

head |B attached to one end that contains a depending stem or tubular neck ||l thereon arranged to fit rotatably into the top end of said standard, whereby this device is thus readily but detachably mountable on the standard for swingable adjustment thereon in a substantially horizontal plane. Said head is included herein is substantially in the shape of a switch box carrying therein the well known form of snapswitch "3 which includes a pull-chain H! to actuate it and which is operably connected with such electric conductor l3, while a conductor part I3 is extended from said switch l8 and conductor l3 thru the arm IS, in the usual manner.

The tubular member or arm l contains on its outer or free end a member 2| arranged to receive and carry thereon the customary lamp supporting socket; and this member 2| is preferably in the form of a sleeve as disclosed herein, and a knuckle 22 is provided on the end of arm |5 whereon this sleeve is adjustably mounted, as by means of screws 23 extending thru the sleeve into the knuckle. The sleeve can thus be tilted on the knuckle, as indicated in Fig. 2, and can be readily adjusted thereon in a substantially vertical plane. A spring 24 is seated in the sleeve and carries a segment 25 on its upper end to hold it frictionally against the knuckle 22,

whereby to retain this sleeve in its adjusted position.

This novel member or sleeve 2| has a threaded stem 26 depending from its lower end, and this stem is arranged like the usual stem on a known electric lamp bracket, for receiving and supporting thereon the customary electric switch 21 with its pull-chain 28 and containing the socket part 29 for receiving and carrying therein the bulb 30 and also the shade 3| thereon, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Said sleeve 2| has the hand-engaged control means 32 attached thereto for adjusting the position of the lamp; and in this form is also arranged for actuating the switch 27. This is preferably accomplished by means of a depending element or rod 33 which has its upper end 34 bent over and beveled to fit tightly into a pocket 35 provided on the side of the sleeve 2|, and said rod has a knob or handle 36 with a bore 31 therein slidably mounted and irictionally held on its lower end. A notch, Figs. 5 and 6, 38 provided in a cap 39 on the handle 36 is arranged to receive therein the lowest bead of said pull-chain 28; so that by simply engaging and slightly moving or sliding this handle 36 on the rod 33 the switch can be conveniently actuated, and at the same time as you adjust the socket with its bulb and shade hereby; and all of this can be conveniently accomplished by an occupant of a chair positioned alongside this lamp, without any need of handling the shade or soiling its visible exterior.

In Fig. 2 this invention is illustrated as comprising a modified hand-engaged means 32", and this form is more particularly adapted for use where its switch member 21" with its at tached lamp-socket 29 is not equipped with ,a pull-chain switch, like that shown in Figs. 1

and 8. Otherwise, the parts herein are identical with those first above described and comprising the bracket arm I5 having at one end the casing IS with its pull-chain "switch l8 and depending stem IT for mounting the device swingably upon the customary lamp standard I; said arm also carrying on its outer end the sleeveil, tiltably adjustable 'on screws 23, and

containing thereon the pocket 35 and also the depending stem for having attached thereto said chainless switch member and socket, 21" and 29". Altho herein the rod 33" is bent and beveled at its upper end and fits tightly but removably in that pocket 35, just as in the other forms, yet herein the handle or knob 36" with the connected end of said rod are modified and are preferably arranged to be held firmly together, as by the use of interengaging threads as indicated; since herein no relative slidable movement between handle and rod is required, as is inthe forms disclosed in Figs. 1 and 8. The hand-engaged operating means 32" in this construction is thus used for adjusting the lamp on its arm and also the arm on its standard, without any need of grasping and soiling the shade; while the light herein is actuated by handling the element IE! on the switch It in the usual manner.

In Fig. 8 in this drawing my invention is shown as comprising a bracket arm l5, which is modified slightly from the above described arm |5, and it omits that casing or head i6 with its switch I8, being thus in a simple form and more economical in construction. However, this arm |5 also contains the depending stem l1 arranged to fit into the upper end of said customary standard II, to be swingably adjustable thereon, like said arm l5. Otherwise the parts herein are identical with those in the above first described form and comprising the sleeve 2|, which is also tiltably mounted by the screws 23 onto a knuckle 22' provided on the outer or free end of this arm IS; the sleeve 2| being the same as in the preceding form, arranged to receive and carry the. customary switch 21 with its pull-chain 28 and bulb 30 therein; while the hand-engaged means 32 herein likewise includes the rod 33 secured to pocket 35 on the sleeve and carrying the handle 36 slidably on said rod and engaged to the pull-chain 28, with this handle operable for actuating the switch and adjusting the lamp exactly as in the above described form. Only the arm [5 is herein modified at its standard-engaging end and the switch It is omitted, to economize and simplify this device whenever that is preferred.

I claim:

1. A control device for use on an electric lamp including an upright standard, said device comprising an arm and means at one end for readily mounting it adjustable in a horizontal plane on said standard, a sleeve mounted adjustably on the other end of said arm, an electric light socket including a pull-chain switch removably mounted on said sleeve, a rod having its upper end secured to the sleeve and depending therebeiow, and a handle movably mounted on the lower end of said rod and being connected with the pull-chain, wherewith, by merely grasping and moving said handle the switch can be actuated and the socket with its light can be variously adjusted relative to said standard.

2. In an electric lamp including a hollow standard equipped with an electric conductor therein, a device comprising a hollow arm hav' ing means at one end mounting the arm swingably adjustable on the standard, with the conductor extended thru the arm, a sleeve tiltably adjustable on the other end of Said arm and having a depending stem, an electric light socket including a pull-chain switch removably mounted on said stem and being operably connected with said conductor, a rod secured to and depending from said sleeve, and a handle slidably mounted on the lower part of said rod and being engaged to the pull-chain, wherewith, by sliding the handle on the rod said switch can be actuated and by moving the handle and rod said sleeve and light can be variously adjusted.

3. In an electric lamp including an upright standard having a bracket arm swingably adjustable thereon, means mounted as a unit and movable on the outer end of said arm and comprising a sleeve adjustable in a vertical plane 10 on the arm, a bulb-receiving socket mounted on said sleeve and including a pull-chain switch, a rod depending from the sleeve, and a handle on the lower end of the rod and engaged to the pull-chain, said handle being movable on the 15 rod for actuating the switch and movable with the rod for adjusting the sleeve and bulb relative to the arm and to the standard.
