1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful im provements and structural refinements in amalgam carriers, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate convenient and expeditious placing of amalgam in a tooth cavity and subsequently tamping the same firmly into position.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its convenient operability in poorly accessible locations, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture. I
With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in use;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the invention per se, the amalgam receptacle thereof being shown in section;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the device as applied to a tooth, the amalgam receptacle being shown in section; and
Figure 4 is an end view of the amalgam receptacle per se.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of an amalgam carrier which is designated generally by the reference character and embodies in its construction an elongated handle l2 affording at least at one end thereof a slender shank M which has a substantially semi-circular outer end portion l6 terminating in an enlarged, frusto-conical or tapered tamping head l8, as is best shown in Figures 2 and 3.
A substantially frusto-conical amalgam receptacle 2|] affords at its minor end a restricted neck portion 22 which is freely slidable on the portion l6 of the shank l4 and is provided integrally with a tubular guiding sleeve 24 which loosely embraces the shank portion US, as shown.
The opening 26 in the neck portion 22 is sufficiently small to prevent the receptacle 20 from sliding off the tamping head [8, yet is sufficiently large to facilitate sliding as well as rocking of the entire receptacle on the shank portion I6.
When the invention is placed in use, the receptacle 20 is drawn on the shank portion Hi toward the tamping head 18 as shown, and a quantity of amalgam 28 is positioned in the receptacle for filling a cavity 30 in a tooth 32. In this position the tamping head I8 is disposed entirely within the receptacle 20 and does not interfere with placing of the amalgam material in the cavity, and after this is accomplished, preferably by rocking the receptacle 20 on the shank portion 15, the receptacle is then drawn rearwardly on the shank portion, that is, away from the tamping head [8, as indicated at 34 in Figure 2. This causes the tamping head [8 to become exposed for firmly pressing the filling into the tooth cavity, which may be accomplished without interference from the amalgam receptacle.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure, and accordingly further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
Having described the invention, claimed as new is:
An amalgam carrier comprising an elongated handle having a slender shank, said shank having an enlarged outwardly tapered tamping head on the end thereof remote from said handle, a substantially frusto-conical amalgam receptacle, an integral sleeve on the minor end of said receptacle and extending axially outwardly therefrom, said receptacle and sleeve having a diametrically reduced portion adjacent the juncture thereof and loosely positioned on said shank whereby said receptacle is slidably and rockably mounted on said shank, and said sleeve having an annular outer edge engageable with said shank to limit the extent of rocking of the receptacle on the shank.
