Patented Oct. 14, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 v FOLDABLE TABLE AND SEAT UN'IT Fred Loibl, Sr., Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii Application December 19, 1950, Serial No. 201,528 v The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in foldable table and seat structure, foldable as a unit under the table top and constructing the table top to provide a carrying case for the folded device.

An important object of the invention is to provide a foldable table having legs foldable under the top thereof and also providing a foldable seat structure connected to and foldable with the legs.

Another object of the invention is to provide an individual seat structure including foldable legs supporting the outer edge of the seat and a rigid arm supported on a foldable table leg and swingable into a folded position with the le under the table top.

A still further object isto provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure lis a perspective view of the table top in closed position to provide a carrying case;

Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the table and seat structures in open position;'

Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of one section of the table top showing one of the table legs and seat units folded thereunder and with the other table leg and seat unit in open position;

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line fl4 of Figure 3; and

Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the foldable table legs and foldable seat structures with the latter in position for folding under the table top with the table leg.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a table top composed of a pair of rectangular shaped sections 6 and l which may be constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material and formed with skirted portions 8 at each edge of each table top section. The table top sections 6 and 1 are connected to each other along one longitudinal edge of their skirted portions 8 by a conventional type of piano hinge 9 to fold the sections 6 and 1 downwardly with their lower skirted edges abutting to provide a carrying case I0.

5 Claims. (01. 155-124) One of the table top sections is provided with a handle II and the sections are secured in folded position by catches 12 of the conventional type.

A table leg '13 also of sheet metal or other suitable construction is connected at it'supper edge to the inside of the skirted portion 8 at each end of each table top section B and l by conventional piano type hinges 14 for folding the legs, 13 upwardly under the table top. The legs are held in open position by foldable braces [5 of a conven tional type which are foldable upwardlynnder the table top together with the legs 13.

Theside edges of the legs I31a're formed with inwardly extending flanges IE to eliminate sharp edges on the legs and the flange at the outer edge of each leg is formed with a notch .I'l in which a channel member 18 is welded'or otherwise suite ably secured in a horizontal position on the inside of the leg with the open side of the channel member facing inwardly with respect to the leg.

A bracket!!! which may be of either L-shape or U-shape construction is suitably secured in the channel member 18' and on which an arm .20 is swingably supported at its inner end'by means of an eye 21 whereby the arm may be supported in the channel member in an outwardly projected position with respect to the table leg l3 or the arm may swing into a position parallel with the leg IS in the manner as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings. A notch 22 is formed ,in the lower flange of channel member 18 to accommodate the arm 20 when in its folded position.

A seat 23 is rigidly secured to the outer end of arm 20 in a position with the arm riveted or otherwise suitably secured under the seat adjacent one side edge thereof. The seat may also be of sheet metal or other suitable construction and formed at its side edges with downwardly extending flanges or skirts 24 to eliminate sharp edges on the seat.

An inverted U-shaped leg 25 is hinged at its upper edge behind the outermost flange 24 of the seat by a conventional piano type hinge 26 for folding the leg 25 upwardly under the seat 23 and the leg 25 is held in its open position by a foldable brace 21 of a conventional type.

The arm 20 of each seat 23 is locked in its outwardly projecting horizontal position in channel I8 by a swinging catch 28 fixed to a thumb screw 29 threaded into a socket 30 which is secured to the inside of leg 13, the catch being swingable upwardly at the open side of channel 18 to hold the arm therein.

The front and rear edges of the section of the top which is provided with the handle I I are also 3 formed with offset flanges 3| to project inwardly of the other section of the top, when closed, to mutually support each other and relieve the hinge 9 and catches l2 of the weight of the top sections.

In the operation of the device, the table legs l3 are opened by swinging the same downwardly individually and braces I5 lock the legs in open position. Seats 23 are then opened by swinging arms upwardly and then swinging the arms outwardly at the side of the table to place the arms in channel supports 18 and locked therein by the catches 28. The legs 25 for the seats are then swung downwardly and locked by braces 21.

The seats and table are folded by reversing the above procedure.

In-view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the inventionthe same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what isclaimed as new is:

1. A foldable table and seat unit comprisin a table top formed of a pair of foldable sections adapted for folding one against the other to form a carrying case, a foldable leg hinged to each end of each section, a seat having a rigid arm, and means carried by the leg adapted to receive the arm for rigidly supporting the arm and seat in an outwardly extending open position, and means swingably connecting the arm to the leg, said arm and seat being foldable against the leg for folding therewith under the top.

2. A foldable table and seat unit comprising a table top formed of a pair of foldable sections adapted for folding one against the other to form a carrying case, a foldable leg hinged to each end of each section, a seat having a rigid arm, a support for the arm carried by the leg and in which the arm is received to rigidly support the arm thereon to hold the seat in an open position;

and means swingably connecting the arm to the support for folding movement of the arm against the leg for folding therewith under the top.

3. A foldable table and seat unit comprising a table top formed of a pair of foldable sections adapted for folding one against the other to form a carrying case, a, foldable leg hinged to each end of each section, a seat having a rigid arm, and a channel member carried by the leg and to which the arm is swingably connected and adapted for receiving the arm to rigidly support the arm in said channel member, and said arm and seat being foldable as a unit against the leg for folding therewith under the top.

A foldable table comprising a table top, legs swingably connected to the top for foldin thereunder, a channel member carried by each leg, a seat having a rigid arm, means swingably connecting the arm to the channel member for rigidly supporting the arm therein, said arm being swingable outwardly of said member into a position for permitting folding of the arm and seat as a unit against the'legand for folding with the leg under the top, and means lockin the arm in said channel member.

5. A foldable table comprising a table top, legs swingably connected to the top for folding thereunder, a channel member carried by each leg, 2. seat having a rigid arm, means swingably connecting the armto the channel member for rigidly supporting the arm therein, said arm being swingable outwardly of said member into a position for permitting folding of the arm and seat as a unit against the-leg and for folding with the leg under the top, means locking the arm in said channel member and a leg swingably connected to the seat for folding thereunder.
